2 digit addition with addition board This is the tens and ones addition board that your teacher

has made. You use them to add numbers together using MAB blocks.

Addition or adding is where you have 2 numbers and you find out the total of the two numbers altogether. First you will get a sum to work out. This is an example sum. The sums you may normally do will have different numbers.

The first number is 23. Another way to say 23 is 2 tens 3 ones. This is what 23 looks like when it is on the addition board. See how the tens are in the tens space, and the ones are in the ones space.

The next number we place on our board is 16. Another way of saying 16 is 1 ten 6 ones. This is what 16 looks like on the addition board.

Now we need to add the two numbers together. Bring all the ones down and place them in the ones answer space.

Bring all the tens down and place them in the tens answer space.

The next step is to count all the ones. Record this number in your book where the sum was written. Don’t forget to write it in the ones space (the right column).

In this sum, you would have counted 9 ones. So you would write a 9 in the ones column.

Next count the number of tens there are altogether. Record this number in your book where the sum was written. Write it in the tens space.

In this sum, you would have counted 3 tens. So you would write a 3 in the tens column.
