MANHOLES

SECTION 3B SPECIFICATIONS

1-GENERAL The CONTRACTOR shall furnish and install manholes of the type shown on the Contract Drawings and as specified herein. The work shall include the required inlet and outlet pipe connections whether for new or existing sewers, frames and covers, masonry, concrete, reinforcing steel, special pipe fittings, precast units, and all other materials, tools and equipment necessary to produce complete manholes. Associated work such as excavation, backfilling, grading, paving, etc., is specified elsewhere. Manholes shall be watertight, and shall be so tested in accordance with the Section entitled, "Underground Sewer Piping." Precast reinforced concrete sections utilized to construct manholes shall be produced in a plant approved by the ENGINEER. The plant shall be currently approved by the NYSDOT for the manufacture of concrete pipe. The manufacturer shall provide the ENGINEER with a shop drawing certifying that all precast concrete manhole sections furnished to this project shall conform to the requirements of the Contract Documents and shall conform to ASTM Specification C-478, except as modified and/or supplemented in this section of the specifications. Aggregates shall be from NYSDOT-approved sources.

2-PRECAST CONCRETE BASES Manhole bases shall be precast concrete. Their design and fabrication shall conform to the general requirements of this section and the provisions of ASTM Specifications C-478. The bases shall conform to the basic dimensions shown on the Contract Drawings, and the CONTRACTOR shall submit shop drawings prior to construction, showing typical design, reinforcing, and manufacturing details. The horizontal joint at the top of the base shall be compatible with that of the precast wall sections. The precast bases shall be uniformly supported on a compacted, level, foundation of Type D-R-1 run-of-crusher stone per the Section entitled, "Excavation and Backfill," which in turn shall bear on sound undisturbed earth. The minimum depth of the stone foundation shall be six (6) inches throughout, but shall vary to the depth necessary to reach a sound undisturbed earth. Minimum diameter of the stone foundation shall be the outside diameter of the base plus two (2) feet. The precast bases shall be manufactured to contain openings in the wall, of minimum size, to receive the ends of the pipe, such openings being accurately set to conform with line and grade of sewer. All sanitary sewer connections between manholes and pipes shall be made with flexible connectors meeting all material and performance requirements of A.S.T.M. Standard C-923 titled "Resilient Connectors Between Reinforced Concrete Manhole Structures And Pipes". The ends of the pipe shall be accurately positioned in the openings, properly secured against movement. All precast concrete bases shall be free from cracks, damaged joints, exposed reinforcing, aggregate pockets, spalls, and dimensional distortions or other irregularities. Any units rejected by the ENGINEER shall be tagged and removed from the job site immediately.
