Key Ideas / Concepts: Finding the area of an irregular triangle

Problem Scenario: A yacht race follows a triangular course. The course from Buoy P to Buoy Q is 1.8 km on a true bearing of 058°. At Buoy Q the course changes direction. The course from Buoy Q to Buoy R is 2.7 km and PQR = 74°. The race coordinators want to rope the course off so no one enters the 'no go' zone, which is within the triangle. The captain in charge of the boat roping the course off, has to calculate what direction he is to travel after each buoy and how much rope he will need. The water authorities charge \$40 per square metre the race ropes off. How much will this cost the race organisers?

Problem Introduction How will you introduce the problem to the students? How will help them to decode the problem? Problem-Solving Exploration What support will be needed during this phase? What guiding questions might you ask? Class Discussion / Plenary What strategies might you use for sharing out and discussion? What are the key concepts / skills you want to emerge?

Formative Assessments / Scaffolding How will you assess individual student understanding? How will you support any gaps or new need-to-knows?

What • Workshop – Power Point (lecture, direct instruction)  if everyone’s struggling

• •

Workshop – Small group  if a few students are struggling Revolving Workshop  pull one student out from each group, send back

• Workshop with group liaisons – making the student the expert • Activity on unit conversions (review), self-paced tutorial, practice problems • Fishbowl activity • Socratic seminar • Listening & providing guiding questions • Have group members switch • Providing helpful links, resource links • Share out • Readdress the knows / need to knows • Link to prior activities When Majority aren’t getting it – a lot of students asking questions, not discussing, off topic behavior * stagger the workshops as needed

Follow-up / Reinforcement What additional practice, extensions, support, assessment will be needed at this point?
