The New Paradigm iN assaulT rifles

Emerging from the U.S. Military’s SCAR™ program, the MK 16 and MK 17 weapon systems use a common multi-caliber architecture that is highly modular and instantly adaptable to virtually any mission requirements, and is further enhanced by the MK 13 grenade launcher. Built with an eye toward the economic realities and small logistic footprint requirements of today’s highly mobile military, every component of the FN SCAR™ Family is readily adaptable to future upgrades and enhanced ammunition designs. Overall life cycle costs are reduced and nearly all standard maintenance can be easily accomplished at the operator or unit armorer level. The FN SCAR™ is serving on the front lines with America’s warfighters in the defense of freedom.

why The fN sCar™?
Since its adoption of the AR15 by the U.S. Air Force in 1962, and by the U.S. Army in 1964, the basic individual military weapon of the United States has demonstrated certain compromises inherent in its design and cycle of operation. Foremost among these compromises is the direct-gas impingement operation system. During the firing and ejection cycles, substantial amounts of carbon and other by-products of cartridge combustion are routed directly into the bolt and receiver areas, causing increased fouling. Naturally, this increased fouling results in reduced operating reliability and requires greater frequency of cleaning and other maintenance by the weapon operator. Responding to concerns from special operators in combat regarding the reliability, accuracy, safety and ergonomics of the current platform, the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane, began an investigation of potential improvements. In the years that followed the U.S. Government conducted an Analysis of Alternatives (AoA) to determine if enhancements or upgrades could be made to the existing platform, or if a new weapon was needed. It was determined that a new, more reliable and more adaptable individual weapon was required. In late 2003, the Joint Operational Requirements Document for a new combat assault rifle was approved and signed; the following January, a worldwide solicitation was issued to the military firearms industry. In July 2004, in a full and open competition, nine vendors submitted twelve different designs for the three new weapon systems. Unlike the competition, FN delivered a new weapon built to the operator’s requirements—not adapted to them. The FN SCAR™ submission passed all of the GO/NO-GO criteria and was unanimously chosen by the selection board composed of senior SOF operators representing every selection component. In November of the same year, FN was awarded the full SCAR™ contract for both 5.56mm and 7.62mm rifles, along with the 40mm Enhanced Grenade Launcher Module (EGLM). Developmental testing by FN designers, engineers and operators from various branches of the U.S. Military to evaluate the new weapons’ endurance, reliability and accuracy was conducted from August 2005 through January 2006. Four Early User Assessments were also conducted prior to, during and after the developmental testing process to integrate operator feedback into the final SCAR™ design. Low-Rate Initial Production (LRIP) and Production Acceptance Test and Evaluations were conducted from May 2006 through June of 2007. Beginning in August 2007, the Initial Operational Test and Evaluation phase was conducted by various units of the U.S. Military community, including the U.S. Army Rangers, U.S. Marine Corps Special Operations Command, U.S. Navy SEALS and U.S. Army Special Forces. These tests were carried out in a variety of operational environments including urban, maritime, jungle and winter/mountain warfare situations. Final testing was completed in September of 2008 and the SCAR™ and EGLM were announced as Operationally Effective/Operationally Suitable and Sustainable (OE/ OS). Initial fielding to operational units with U.S. special operators began in April 2009. The first operational units armed with the FN SCAR™ system deployed for overseas duty in the summer of 2009. In April 2010, upon successful in-theater combat assessments, the FN SCAR™ (MK 16 and MK 17) and the EGLM (MK 13) were granted Milestone C (the acquisition phase associated with fielding/deployment). In August of the same year the FN SCAR™ system received approval for full-rate production for the MK 16, MK 17 and MK 13.

sCar™ PriNCiPle of oPeraTioN
The MK 16 and MK 17 rifles operate on the short-stroke gas piston system. As the bullet passes the gas port in the barrel a portion of the propellant gases are routed through the gas regulator to the gas piston located below the front sight post. The gas pushes rearward against the piston, which drives the moving parts assembly rearward to eject the fired case and load a new cartridge from the magazine. Excess gases are vented forward through the gas vent hole in the front of the gas regulator. The advantage over the direct gas impingement system is that heat, soot and carbon from propellant combustion are not routed into the bolt or chamber, keeping these critical areas cooler and cleaner for greater reliability and enhanced accuracy. When compared to a direct gas impingement system that has been adapted to use a gas piston or operating rod, the FN SCAR™ gas system proves to be more simple, robust and reliable. The first position on the gas regulator is for normal operation, while the second position ensures there is no increase in the cyclic rate of fire when using a sound suppressor.

Now type-designated as the MK 20 SSR, the FN SCAR™ Sniper Support Rifle (SSR) is a tailored design for long-range precision fire applications while also providing capability to fight close in. Based on the MK 17 SCAR™, the SSR is capable of sub-minute of angle accuracy out to and beyond 1,000 yards. The SSR features an extended receiver rail for mounting in-line night vision and thermal devices with standard/sniper optics. It features an enhanced trigger requiring no adjustments that is rugged enough for field use but precise enough for long-range target engagement. The proprietary barrel extension and barrel profile improve accuracy, and the fully-adjustable non-folding stock enables the operator to optimize the rifle for firing position and body type. In October 2010, upon successful in-theater combat assessments, the FN SCAR™ SSR was granted Milestone C (the acquisition phase associated with fielding/deployment).
General speCIfICatIons reCeIver - hard-anodized monolithic aluminum receiver - mIl-std 1913 accessory rails at the 3, 6, 9 and 12 o’clock positions - adjustable, removable folding front and rear back-up iron sights barrel - hammer-forged, chrome-lined steel - fully free-floating design - the barrel can be removed and replaced by the operator to facilitate cleaning and maintenance with negligible impact on previously established zero - flash hider optimized for suppressed fire stoCk - non-folding, adjustable cheekpiece - length of pull adjusts without tools - aluminum and polymer construction operatInG Controls - ambidextrous selector lever and magazine release - Charging handle may be mounted on right or left side - enlarged trigger guard - adjustable gas regulator for use with or without suppressor to maintain felt recoil maGazIne - available 10- and 20-round magazine capacity - steel magazine body - extended magazine base pad for improved ergonomics - low friction follower

While semi-automatic precision rifles have been in service since the mid-1990s, the need exists for a weapon capable of precisely aimed and rapid follow-up shots at distance, but with greater reliability and resistance to rough handling. Enter the FN SCAR™ Sniper Support Rifle (SSR). Born of the need to integrate the latest in electro-optics technologies, the FN SCAR™ SSR further advances the long-range capability of the MK 17 weapon platform. Utilizing the proven operating system and modular architecture found elsewhere in the FN SCAR™ Family, the SSR incorporates features seldom found in a semi-auto sniper rifle.

Beyond its modern battle rifle heritage, the FN SCAR™ SSR features a modern trigger that can be configured for two-stage or singlestage operation, and that has no adjustment screws to loosen or maintain. The rifle’s durable precision stock can be adjusted to the shooter’s preference without tools, and has an elastomer-covered sloped cheek rest for improved ergonomics. More than just high strength aluminum alloy, the unique FN SCAR™ SSR extended receiver is designed for rigidity and features openings for manipulation of the gas regulator when used with a sound suppressor. The extra length accommodates currently-fielded night vision or thermal target

augmentation devices used in conjunction with high performance day optics. Engineered for uncompromising accuracy, the chrome-lined, cold hammer-forged barrel is mated to the receiver by a specially designed barrel extension, which along with a massive recoil lug provides consistent shot-to-shot performance. And like its MK 17 counterpart, the FN SCAR™ SSR’s barrel can be removed by the operator for cleaning or maintenance. When you need the accuracy of a match rifle with the ruggedness of an assault rifle – look no further than the FN SCAR™ SSR.

The two new FN FCU’s (Fire Control Unit) for the 40mm MK 13 EGLM represent a quantum leap in target ranging and automatic aim correction to ensure first round hit capability in virtually any combat situation. By combining advanced laser rangefinding technology with a sophisticated ballistic computer/clinometer and a sight with moving red aiming reticle, human error-induced aiming factors are removed from the equation. To use the FN FCU, the operator simply places his primary rifle optic reticle on the target and activates the ranging function. The computer develops a firing solution for the specific type of grenade being used based on range and firing angle and instantly adjusts the moving red aiming reticle in the FCU. The operator then re-centers the target in the moving red aiming reticle and fires for effect.

by the operator, for up to 50 different types of 40mm grenades; the ballistic solutions from the computer take into account and compensate for the initial vertical angle of the target, thus enhancing first round on target capability. The FCU is operable by an external trigger or by a remote trigger.

The revolutionary FN HAMR (Heat Adaptive Modular Rifle) is designed to fill the roles of the individual assault rifle and light machine gun in one light, compact package. Capable of both minute of angle (MOA) accuracy and high sustained rates of fire, the FN HAMR offers a level of versatility that is unmatched by any other automatic weapon in the world. The FN HAMR’s revolutionary technology automatically transitions the weapon from closed-bolt to open-bolt operation before it reaches a temperature at which a chambered cartridge could cook-off, creating improved safety for the operator and surrounding troops alike. The FN HAMR is the answer to the needs of America’s infantry warfighters today and for decades to come.

Bridging the gap between the individual soldier’s closed-bolt assault rifle and the crew-served open-bolt machine gun is the FN HAMR (Heat Adaptive Modular Rifle). The FN HAMR represents nothing less than a revolutionary leap in the technology of infantry automatic weapons. With today’s highly-mobile, fluid and unpredictable conflicts, the need for a versatile, reliable, highrate-of-fire automatic weapon at the infantry squad level has never been greater. Historically infantry automatic weapons have been defined by their cycle of operation; firing from either a closed-bolt or open-bolt. Closed-bolt automatic rifle designs offer individual

portability, greater accuracy and enhanced first-round reliability, but their fixed barrels retain heat during extended firing, quickly leading to the hazard of a chambered round overheating and cooking-off, which endangers both the operator and surrounding troops. Open-bolt designs are often crew-served weapons that offer higher rates of sustained fire along with the ability to change barrels to prevent cook-offs, but to do so at the expense of reduced portability and less accuracy. The FN HAMR is designed to operate in either the closed-bolt mode or the open-bolt mode, using a dual-mode firing mechanism that gauges the barrel temperature.

Switching from one mode to the other is automatically performed by the thermal actuator located under the barrel just forward of the chamber. This allows the FN HAMR to instantly transition from closed-bolt mode to open-bolt mode and continue to operate safely even when barrel temperature has reached the cook-off point. When firing stops and the barrel cools, the thermal actuator self-resets and the FN HAMR switches back to the closed-bolt mode, all without manual intervention of the operator. Closed-bolt accuracy and open-bolt firepower in one weapon are now a reality with the FN HAMR.

THE dEpENdAblE WorKHorSE oF MEdIUM MACHINE GUNS.
The M240 was adopted by the U.S. Military following a worldwide competition in search of a reliable 7.62x51mm NATo machine gun. With a pistol grip, carry handle and fixed buttstock, the FN M240B is today’s “go-to” medium machine gun for all branches of the U.S. Armed Services. The FN M240L is a product of a U.S. Army program to reduce the weight of the M240. The FN M240L sheds approximately 5 lbs. compared to a similar FN M240B via the extensive use of titanium alloy in the receiver while maintaining the durability and absolute reliability FN M240B operators have come to expect. This critical weight savings translates into greater mobility with less fatigue for the operator. The FN M240 family of medium machine guns (7.62x51mm NATo) has long been employed by all services of the U.S. Armed Forces. It comes in several variants and mounting configurations: a coaxial version for armored combat vehicles, a pintle-mounted version for light tactical vehicles and rotary-wing aircraft, and bipod and tripod versions for dismounted infantry units. Rugged and highly reliable, this weapon’s high volume of fire makes it the principal suppressive fire instrument for the infantry platoon and company. The FN M240 is one of the most essential and widely used small arms in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Based on the original FN MAG-58 design, the FN M240 made its U.S. debut as the M240C in 1982 as a coaxial design for use on main battle tanks and armored fighting vehicles. With demonstrated reliability far exceeding other mid-caliber designs then in service, members of the FN M240 family quickly became the primary medium machine gun throughout the U.S. Military. The spade-grip, pintle-mounted FN M240D is designed for use on armored vehicles, helicopters and naval craft. The FN M240H is a U.S. Army variant further optimized for combat helicopter deployment. For the FN M240H and FN M240D, optional egress kits consisting of the buttstock, trigger mechanism and bipod enable the use of a pintle-mounted FN M240 as a ground role machine gun for self-defense by dismounted vehicle crew members.

For those who prefer the operating simplicity of a striker-fired pistol, we’d like to introduce the all-new FN FNS. The FN FNS is the result of four years of precise engineering and innovative product development, all with the intent of bringing the most highly advanced striker-fired pistol possible to the American law enforcement and personal defense markets. A quality circle of more than twelve distinguished handgun experts were assembled to evaluate the existing crop of striker-fired pistols and establish just what was needed to take the FN FNS design to the next level. No corners were cut and no stone was left unturned to make the FN FNS the striker-fired pistol of the future. Here’s what separates the all-new FN FNS from the competition. The FN FNS striker-fired design is a true double-action, activated by a pivoting hinged trigger that has an exceptionally crisp break and a short travel to reset. The angle and position of the finger

frame has been redesigned to create the best bore axis ratio possible. This low-bore axis places the web of the firing hand higher on the grip to reduce felt recoil to an absolute minimum. Precise shots with even the heaviest loads are remarkably easy. The FN FNS also has a sleek design that is perfect for concealed carry purposes when it matters most. Simplicity of operation is the hallmark of the new FN FNS. The fully-ambidextrous controls are shaped for easy access without snagging on holsters or clothing. The contoured frame-mounted manual safety is ideally placed for positive operation by either thumb. Safety is enhanced via a disassembly lever that requires the slide to be locked fully to the rear in order to rotate downward for disassembly. The FN FNS offers a hammer-forged stainless steel barrel with ramped chamber and a forged stainless steel slide with cocking serrations both front and rear. The slide is topped with three-dot fixed combat sights. The rear sight offers the unique Deep-V notch design that allows a better view of the front sight blade for faster sight acquisition and an improved sight picture, especially in low light conditions. The FN FNS also is equipped with steel frame rails that can be easily replaced after thousands of rounds of heavy use to keep the handgun in action for many years to come. The flat-profile recoil spring rides on a full-length guide rod for smoother feeding and enhanced reliability. So how does the FN FNS shoot? The FN FNS is match-accurate right out of the box. The crisp trigger, match-grade barrel and tight-fitting tolerances all combine to create a pistol than puts every shot right where you want. The FN FNS is Made with Pride right here in the U.S. Every FN FNS is built in the same American factory that makes machine guns for the U.S. Military. The same rigorous quality control processes and meticulous inspections required by the military also go into each FN FNS. The ISO 9001 Quality certification proves the FN FNS pistol is the product of state of the art manufacturing.

state of the art Less LethaL technoLogy

Around the globe, military forces and law enforcement agencies alike are embracing the concept of less lethal technology for civil disorder, correctional institutions, border defense, physical facility security, and force protection, or in any other situation where the control, dispersal and/or neutralization of non-compliant individuals or groups must be accomplished with maximum effectiveness and minimum risk. FN is the world leader in less lethal technology and training. FN has long been a pioneer in the technologies that bridge the gap between firearms and traditional impact, chemical and electro-muscular disruption devices. Today’s less lethal system from FN consists of the carbine-size FN 303 Less Lethal Launcher and the holster-size FN 303P Less Lethal Pistol. Combining exceptional reliability, simplicity, ease of use and point target accuracy at extended distances, the FN Less Lethal System is an essential component on any military or law enforcement equipment list.

The FN brand is synonymous with innovative automatic shotguns. FN built the John M. Browning-designed Auto-5 in 1903. Today’s FN SLP autoloader is ready for any military or law enforcement mission. It is ideal for facility security, force protection, dynamic building entry, urban operations, special unit/ team deployment, and general law enforcement patrol.
