ABSTRACT

This report investigates speech compression.

INTRODUCTION
Encoding digital speech to take up less storage space and transmission bandwidth. The PCM, ADPCM, CELP and LD-CELP methods are commonly used for speech compression. Some of the principles of speech encoding and how sound is encoded digitally will be demonstrated.

This will be done by a graphical user interface (GUI); small applications that will load up a mono speech File and then manipulate the sound. The user will be able to do such tasks as:  Reduce the sample rate  Filter the speech  Reduce the bits per sample (how many bits are used to encode each sample).  Encode using non-linear quantization  Change the volume of the speech The user will be able playback the speech and compare the manipulated speech with the original speech.
