Workshop machinery checklist - sheet 1
A basic checklist can be utilised to ensure that safety mechanisms provided on machinery are fully functional. We recommend that such checks are carried out weekly and where the results of the checks require action, that a defects control sheet is also completed.
Machine type and location: …………...............………Checklist number: ………………………...........

No 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.

Item Are all machinery electrical isolation switches in good condition? Are all machinery electrical controls functioning properly, i.e. on/off switches etc.? Do all electrical cables appear to be in good condition with no signs of damage such as fraying etc.? Are all emergency stop buttons fully functional, i.e. will stop the machine if operated? Are all fixed and interlocked guards in place and in a good state of repair? Are there any signs that guards have been tampered with since the last inspection? Where guards have been modified, e.g. for an abnormal production run etc. has this been carried out by a competent person, and do such modifications still provide the relevant level of safety for the operator? Is there evidence that machine operators wear the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when using the machine, e.g. eye protection, foot protection etc.? Are all tools and workpieces fitted to the machine secure before the machine is started up and are they checked at regular intervals during use? Is the floor area around the machine free from obstructions that may cause trips and falls? Is the floor area around the machine free from oils, grease etc. that could cause a slipping hazard? Have operators been instructed not to leave machinery running when they are not in attendance? Is there a maintenance schedule in place for the machine, indicating the last maintenance check? Are operating instructions available for machine users to assist with setting up and use etc.? Are all staff wearing the appropriate PPE?
