In 2005, a group of young New Brunswickers met to brainstorm answers to a simple but compelling question: What do we want of New Brunswick? The group, members of the Next NB/ Avenir NB program launched by the University of New Brunswick, spent eight months engaged in exploring answers to this question and exploring exciting opportunities for the future of the province. The program introduced participants to challenges such as out-migration, economic development, regionalism and poverty. They realized that progress would require the development of a new generation of leaders, entrepreneurs and decisionmakers. It also became clear that young New Brunswickers

"Ideas are currency in the 21st century," says Tim Coates, founder and executive director of 21inc, a non-profit organization following the success of Next NB/Avenir NB. "We must apply new ideas to move forward." Founded in 2007, 21inc has attracted hundreds of applicants for its 21 Leaders for the 21st Century leadership development program. With a bachelor of arts in economics from St. Thomas University and a master's degree in public policy from Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government, Coates is well qualified to guide this initiative. Tim describes 21inc as an "action tank", forging a culture of innovation and learning. needed an ongoing forum to foster these ideas. There was no shortage of young people willing to contribute to the province's drive to prosperity. They just needed the right opportunity – and that turned out to be 21inc.
