Subject: Implementation of the Maryland Advance Directive Registry In 2006 the Maryland legislature passed legislation to establish a state registry for Advance Directives and it was signed into law by Gov. Martin O’Malley. Individuals who so desire may register their Advance Directives and have them available to those with authorized access. Unfortunately, five years later this legislation has never been funded. Delegate Dan Morhaim (Baltimore), sends a letter each year to the Governor and Secretary of Health requesting funding of the program, but to no avail. I suggest we mount a letter-writing campaign to the Governor, the Secretary of Health, and to your state legislators requesting funding the implementation and maintenance of the registry already signed into law. Please make your letters personal. Explain your concerns and fears and why a registry is needed to put your mind at ease. I have provided some ideas that may be useful for inclusion in your letter; using your own words provides more power to the message. Attached is the Annotated Code of Maryland Health General Article, Subtitle 6: Health Care Decisions Act for reference. Attached also are the names and addresses of the Governor and the Secretary of the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. I ask all of you to spread the word to your friends, neighbors and family members. It would be very helpful for letters to be sent from every legislative district of Maryland. This is not a local or a partisan issue, it is important to all of us in the state of Maryland. We can do this. Let’s get to work.
