RANDOM BLOOD SUGAR

ESTIMATION
AND
ITS SIGNIFICANCE
RANDOM BLOOD SUGAR
ESTIMATION
INTRODUCTION
IT IS A METHOD OF ESTIMATING THE GLUCOSE
LEVEL IN THE BLOOD QUICKLY.
WHAT IS RBS?
• Random blood sugar (RBS) measures
blood glucose regardless of when you last
ate. Several random measurements may be
taken throughout the day. Random testing is
useful because glucose levels in healthy
people do not vary widely throughout the day.
Blood glucose levels that vary widely may
indicate a problem. This test is also called a
casual blood glucose test.
- A random blood sugar (glucose) test
is done without regard for when you
last ate. It is the quickest and least
expensive test to diagnose diabetes.
Its greatest drawback is that it is not
highly specific, meaning that it
identifies some people as having the
disease who do not in fact have
diabetes (false-positive results).
- Health professionals will sometimes
use a random blood glucose test
when they notice signs of diabetes
during an appointment. Any
abnormal test results should be
followed up with either the fasting
blood glucose test or the glucose
tolerance test.
Why is
the Test Performed?
The test allows diabetic to carefully monitor blood glucose levels
to assure that they are within the normal range. The individual
can then respond quickly to high or low blood sugar levels
(diabetes or hypoglycemia) with appropriate intervention.
This test can also be a screening test for blood glucose levels.
WHEN?
- PATIENT CANNOT COME TO THE
HOSPITAL DAILY
- UNCONSCIOUS PATIENTS
- ROUGH IDEA OF TREATMENT
RESPONSE IS NEEDED
WHERE ?
2 METHODS
• GLUCOMETER PORTABLE -
ANYWHERE
• GLUCOMETER IN THE LABORATORY
HOW?

NORMAL LEVEL
• 70-125 MG/DL
SIGNIFICANCE
• IF LESS DIAGNOSE HYPOGLYCEMIC.
• IF MORE DIAGNOSE DIABETIC.
• TAKE THE TEST WHENEVER THE
PATIENT WANTS.
• MONITOR BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS IN
A WHOLE DAY VARIATIONS.
• INTERVENTION DONE WHEN
NEEDED.
