LOHRI 2007 CELEBRATIONS
By Manjit Trehan
IndIanapolIs, Jan 27, 2007 - The
festival of Lohri holds deeper me-
aning than most people realize. This
auspicious day falls on the 13th day
of January. It marks the sun’s entry
into the ‘Makar Rashi’ (northern he-
misphere); therefore it signals the
culmination of winter. The focus of
Lohri is a prayer to Agni (to worship
fre), the spark of life, symbolized by
a bonfre. Friends and families gather
around bonfres, throw sweets, pu-
ffed rice and popcorn into the fames
as they sing popular songs. For Punja-
bis, Lohri celebrates fertility, thus, the
frst Lohri of a newly-wed couple and
that of a newborn baby is celebrated
with elegance and splendor.
The origin of Lohri can also be
traced back to the tale of Dulla Bhatti,
a Punjabi version of Robin Hood who
robbed the rich and helped the poor.
He rescued Hindu girls being
forcibly taken to be sold in the Middle
Eastern slave markets. Many popular
Lohri songs express gratitude to Dulha
Bhatti.
Punjabi community of Indianapolis
celebrated Lohri 2007 on Saturday,
January 27th. The event was
organized by the Sikh Educational
& Cultural Society of Indianapolis.
Though there was no bonfre,
there was an abundance of joyous

VARSHOTSAVAH
Hindu Temple Celebrates its First Anniversary
- By Dr. Avantika Rohatgi
IndIanapolIs, FeB 3, 2007 - On
Saturday, Feb 3 2007, the Hindu Tem-
ple of Central Indiana celebrated its
frst anniversary with vigor, piety and
fervor. Several hundred people atten-
ded the grand event and participated
in religious and cultural activities with
enthusiasm and gaiety.
Special sponsorship pujas were
offered in a morning session to all
the deities who were generously
decorated with new clothes, lavish
jewelry and vibrant foral garlands.
The highlight of the event was the
Gauri-Shiva vivah, that was performed
to commemorate the divine marriage
of Lord Shiva and Parvati. As Dr.
Chandrashekhar, a religious expert on
the puja and rituals said, “ This marriage
is performed to seek the blessings of
the gods for our lives and also for
the ability to perform successfully
the duties toward our children of
settling them happily in their lives”,
by conducting their marriages with
dharma and judiciousness.
An evening of cultural program
replete with slokas, colorful dances
and devotional invocations followed.
Particularly noteworthy was the
Shivapadam dance performed with
grace and perfectly synchronized
steps to the strains of devotional
music by several young girls under the
deft choreography of Vrinda Sunil.
The aarti or purifcatory ritual infused
the spirit of devotion and dedication
into all and the grand evening came
to a fnale with a delicious dinner of
dosais, idlis and various types of south
Indian rice dishes and sweets. The joy
and satisfaction of building their own
consecrated place of worship flled
the hearts of devotees who joyfully
sang and prayed together, enthused
with religious fervor and gratitude.

moods, resplendent decorations and
famboyant celebrations.
The doors opened at 7:00pm and
the curtains on the stage closed
in preparation for the upcoming
performances. The evening started
with a variety of snacks and welcome
opportunities to socialize, as this was
the frst major event of the year.
No Punjabi celebration is complete
without Bhangra and Gidha – two
popular forms of folk dances. The
stage performances included Bhangra
by three separate groups and Gidha
performed by an award-winning local
group. Last year, the Gidha group won
second-prize in the international Gidha
competition, held in Chicago. Other
highlights of the evening included a
fusion group dance, songs by local
artists and live Dhol performance by
Dholi Jarnail Singh from New York.
Stage curtains were once again
closed, as dinner buffet was opened.
Lights were dimmed and within
moments, the glimmering dance foor
was full as the DJ unleashed a thread
of Bhangra music. The young and the
young-atheat were all enjoying this
kinship with dance and music.
Chintala, Neeharika Palivela,
Vaishnavi Meda and Sai Krupali
Ambaty.
Then the audience was treated
by two Annamayya kirtanas –
“Govidaasrita” by Meena Moorthy
and Geetha Keshav and “Govinda
Govindayani koluvare” by Sai
Pinnamaneni. The dance for a Pelli
pata, “Yee desanninchi vaccharayya”,
rendered by eight adorable kids
clad in traditional wedding dresses,
Alekhya Ankaraju, Uma Kocherlakota,
Sreya Vemuri, Neeharika Katragadda,
Utkarsh Sayini, Raeya Ponugoti, Harsha
Vemuri and Abhiram Ankaraju, was
an entertaining hit with the crowd.
A song on Lord Rama by Harsha
Vemuri and Vaibhav Vavilala provided
a religious and festive touch to the
program. GITA president, Mr. Balaraju
Chinthala, then gave a speech on
this occasion where he emphasized
the role of festivals, traditions and
customs in our culture and further
stressed on the beautiful Sankranthi
moments and memories we all had in
our childhood.
Then came one of the highlights
of the evening, the play “Ksheera
saagara madhanam”, beautifully
presented by Mr. Mahesh Suravarjjala.
This mythological tug-of-war episode
where ‘devatalu’ and ‘rakshasulu’
churn the ocean of milk, was
impeccably portrayed by fourteen
kids, Saketh Boyapalli, Srinith Challa,
Nishanth Chinnanandi, Abhinay
Davarakonda, Anoop Jasti, Harshita
Kondeti, Laasya Maamidipalli, Srujan
Mupparapu, Sarita Pantula, Divyesh
Sunderraj, Ashwin Sunderraj, Shivani
Suravarjjala, Shravan Suravarjjala and
Akhil Vadlamudi.
The audience were then treated
with dances from three movies by
Adarsh Tamma, Vasuma Yarlagadda,
Nikitha Lattupally, Heera Vemaganti
and Sushuma Yarlagadda. This was
followed by “Naarayaneeyam slokas”
that were devotionally and lucidly
rendered by Srikar Vedala thoroughly
impressed the audience. The last two
items provided a beftting closure to
the event and stole audience’s hearts
and minds. The song, “Vacchindoy
sankranthi”, by Mrs. Lalitha Ankaraju,
Dr. Mantipragada Krishna and Sri
Mohan Devaraju, brought forward
“Sankranthi jnaapakaalu”. Then, the
song and dance by Raja Reddy and
Sathvik Madduri for “Maharajarajasri”
song from the movie Sutradharulu with
the accompanying ‘Gangireddu aata’
by Sandeep Pamireddy and Ravikanth
stood as another highlight for the
program. The Gangireddu later visited
the audience and greeted them.
Kids of all ages thoroughly enjoyed
this Sankranthi visitor among them.
On this occasion, Dr. Chandra Reddy
Gavva, the new President of American
Telugu Association (ATA), spoke of
GITA’s contribution to Telugu people
in Indiana and then introduced the
new offce bearers of ATA who hail
from Indiana. The program concluded
by presenting trophies to sponsors/
donors, cultural program participants
and by appreciation of GITA committee
members.
