We wear the Mask that grins and lies, It hides our cheeks and shades our eyes, this debt we pay to human guile: with torn and bleeding hearts we smile, and mouth with myriad subtleties. From we wear the mask --Paul lawrence dunbar

This exhibit is the culmination of much pre-planning between long-term colleagues Ms. Leisha Woods and Ms. Sonja Stewart. In an effort to extend the study of four novels: The Woman Warrior, by Maxine Hong Kingston, The Awakening by Kate Chopin, Heat and Dust by Ruth Jhabvala and The Sand Child by Tahar Ben Jelloun, it was determined that students would create a mask that would be reective of their own self identity. The colleagues considered several options to display the work. Utlimately, they settled on an art exhibit and a souvenir exhibit book. The labor to publish a coffee table-styled book has already begun. More details of that will soon come. For more news about the book, please contact Ms. Stewart.

"What is it like to reach a moment of clarity?" On the journey to self enlightenment, the trip is often arduous and sometimes life consuming. Many parts of us are covered with a mask of pretentiousness. However, it is the epiphanies along the way that make the journey worthwhile. Furthermore, it is the "A-Ha" moments of clarity which allow us to remove pieces of the mask because we no longer need to hide the true self. The International Baccalaureate Language A/Year 1 Students are themselves on a journey. It seems to be really difficult to bond with your classmates when you haven't reected on yourself. As a part of academic maturation, students were asked to reectively look at their lives and think about what they have done and seen. How have those life experiences inuenced you? What epiphanies have come to light? Each mask, in this exhibit, represents those individual discoveries. The quote accompanying each mask is the moment of clarity.
