Teacher’s Guide

This is a great bell-ringer or exit-slip activity. You can also use it to review characters or historical figures. (Common Core Standard #10 for Writing)
For Reading/Language Arts: Use this to go with the story or novel you are reading. Students should select a character, then write what that character dressed up as and why. The why part is important because they need to explain what would make that character want to wear that costume (could be something in their personality, an event that happened, or perhaps they are part of a group costume with other characters and were forced to wear it). Because this is a creative writing project, if I do collect for a grade, I grade on completion.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------For Social Studies: Use this to go with the unit you are currently studying. Students should select an historical figure from this time period (or a time period that you just completed recently), then write what that person dressed up as and why. The why part is important because they need to explain what would make that person want to wear that costume (could be something in their personality, an event that happened, or perhaps they are part of a group costume with other historical figures/people and were forced to wear it). Because this is a creative writing project, if I do collect for a grade, I grade on completion.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------• I like to have my students share with the class, so they practice some public speaking. It’s also fun to hear the creative responses they come up with. • You can actually do this anytime; it does not have to be the day after Halloween. Students like to talk about Halloween costumes any time of year, so whatever works for you. • I included handouts for both characters and historical figures. I also included some with lines and some without (half-page). Use which ever handout works best.

PAPER SAVER: Have students use their own paper and write the prompt on the board or project on the screen for them. Thanks for downloading & have a great school year! -Tracee

Directions: Last night, your favorite characters went out trick or treating to celebrate
Halloween. Explain (in writing) what they dressed up as and why they chose that costume. If they happen to be a little too old to trick-or-treat, explain why they still went out begging for candy (or what other activity they decided to partake in instead of trick-or-treating).
