Mission Year Newsletter: October 2011

I'm writing as I listen to game 5 of the World Series, so depending on the tone of the letter, you'll probably be able to tell how the Cardinals are doing (joking of course). Actually, that shouldn't be the case as this was an awesome month. I'll keep it short and sweet, so let’s dive in. All of us here in Roseland have really begun to settle in at our service sites. Kendall and I have done a variety of jobs for the housing ministry such as painting, tarring roofs, installing siding, masonry work, gutter installation, and a bit of demolition (which is always fun). On top of that, the girls are really starting to form close relationships with the children at the shelter and school. Some of the most visible fruits of our labor, for me at least, can be seen during the after-school program. Driving and helping the youth with their homework has provided a great opportunity to form bonds. God has definitely used this to provide the encouragement and strength needed to continue His work. Great things are happening in our neighborhood as well. Recently, we had a BBQ in the front yard and fed anyone who would come (and with all the cookies we had, you better believe the kids came running). It was great seeing people from the whole street and it acted as a kind of a “last hoorah” before the winter months hit. I've also been able to sit outside with our next-door neighbors and hear some of their pains/life troubles. It's really nice to have that level of trust established with people you've only known for a month. Please pray for God to soften hearts and make them receptive to Christ's love and redemption. As the month comes to an end we reflect on this past weekend's trip with the youth to Odyssey Fun Farm (a place with hayrides, pumpkin patches, pig races, and a corn maze) and prepare for “Trunk or Treat” this upcoming Saturday at the church. We would appreciate continued prayer for the neighborhood, church body, fund-raising, and our team unity as a whole. Most of all please pray that God is glorified. Thanks! In Christ, Joshua Long
