REFLECTING
THROUGH THE

WEEK
Celebrate the Hope that Saves
Today is World Mission Sunday! We are called to this Eucharistic celebration along with Catholics in every parish, chapel and church throughout the world to fulfill the call we first heard at Baptism, the call to be missionaries, to share our faith. On World Mission Sunday, we are invited to celebrate the hope that saves through prayer and participation in the Eucharist, and by giving generously to the collection today for the Society for the Propagation of the Faith. Let us pray especially at this Mass for all who long to hear the hope-filled, saving message of Jesus, and for the priests, religious and lay catechists in mission countries worldwide who offer them that Good News.

Our preliminary figures show that we raised somewhere between $15,000 and $20,000. This result, in what are still hard times, is a great tribute to the way you all worked together.

FROM OUR PASTOR

This week we will be visited by the organization Holy Land Gifts which represents Christian Arabs in the Holy Land. Anyone who has studied the history of the area we call the Holy Land will know that it has been torn by strife from long before the time of Jesus up until the present day. At the beginning of the 20th century it was part of the Ottoman Empire, under Muslim rule just as it had been since before the Crusades in the Middle Ages; but the defeat of the Turks, who had sided with the Germans in the First World War, meant that the British found themselves responsible for the territory they called Palestine. After the Second World War, in which six million Jews died in the Holocaust, there was an obvious desire to provide a homeland for them and their own preference was that the homeland should be the ancient land of Israel. The British decided that the problem of having two nations in one area was too much for them to police and warned the United Nations that they would leave on May 15, 1948. It was then that the United Nations proposed a partition of the territory into two States, Jewish and Arab, with the historic capital of Jerusalem being divided between them. As you know, things have not been easy since then and it is almost impossible to maintain a balanced perspective on the situation. Many people sympathize with Israel, surrounded by large Arab nations which are largely Muslim and which, because of oil revenues, are very powerful. Yet one also cannot help sympathizing with the Palestinians, driven from their homes as the Jewish population has expanded and often denied basic human rights. People forget that many of the Arabs in the Holy Land have always been Christians, communities which go back to the time of Christ and which were never destroyed. However, now many of these Christian Arabs have emigrated so that those who were once half of the population now make up only 2%. Pope Benedict is so concerned about the remaining Christians in the Holy Land that he recently asked 72-year-old Archbishop Edwin O'Brien to move from the Archdiocese of Baltimore to become the Grand Master of The Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem which is responsible for promoting and defending Christianity in the Holy Land. Archbishop OBrien has said The holy places where Christ walked and where monuments are established to recall his words, his death and resurrection, are now less and less frequented. Therefore we must as good Christians around the world respect that patrimony. Todays sale of olive wood carvings will help to support the 600 Catholic families in Bethlehem. They make their living by carving these religious items to sell to pilgrims and tourists but now so few people are coming to the Church of the Nativity that many of them are unemployed; their only hope is to send things to other countries for sale. Each year we support the shrines of the Holy Land through the Holy Places collection on Good Friday. Today we can strengthen the people who worship regularly in those churches. Church leaders worry that without a living Christian presence, the Holy Land could become like a museum or a theme park. As the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem has said, Only with the living stones, with people, with community, has the land a meaning of holy. It is not a question of buildings and archaeology; it is a question of life. Please keep our fellow Christians in the Holy Land in your prayers.

HOW DO I BECOME A CATHOLIC?

Are you interested in learning more

about the Catholic faith? Would you like to become a Catholic? Do you know someone who may be interested?
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A.) is a process of conversion and initiation in the Catholic Church as adults (anyone seven years of age or older) journey together in faith and share experiences while discerning Gods call. If interested in participating, please call the office. We will be happy to assist you on your journey.

OFFICE HOURS: Monday-Friday, 7:30 am-3:30 pm MARRIAGE PREPARATION: Please contact the Church Office to schedule a meeting with Father Augustine. You need to allow six months for the preparation process and it would help us if you obtain new baptismal certificates before the meeting. We can also help with the convalidation (blessing) of a civil marriage and sometimes with the annulment of a previous marriage, as long as the civil divorce is complete.

DO YOU HAVE A CHILD, SEVEN YEARS OF AGE OR OLDER, WHO HAS NOT YET BEEN BAPTIZED CATHOLIC?
Once a child reaches the age of reason (seven), the child is brought into the Church just as an adult isthrough the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. Following this process of preparation which lasts about a year, the child is fully initiated into the Church at the Easter Vigil through the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and First Communion. In order to have a child baptized Catholic, at least one parent must be Catholic. If you are considering having your childage 7 or olderbecome Catholic, or if you have any questions, please contact Sister Marie at the parish office, 407.293.9556 ext. 121.

BAPTISM PREPARATION is offered to parents and

godparents and is required prior to scheduling a baptism. Please register for the class by calling Deacon Paul Volkerson at the Parish Office (407.293.9556 extension 110). Classes take place on Tuesday evenings at 7:00 pm.

ALL SOULS ENVELOPES

November, beginning with the feasts of All Saints and All Souls is Souls, called the month of the dead. Its the month when we make a special effort to remember those who have gone before us marked with the sign of faith, particularly our family members, friends and benefactors. We give thanks for them and pray for them. If you get envelopes you will find an All Souls envelope among them. If you dont, you will find spare All Souls envelopes at the back of the church. Write the names of the departed loved ones you wish to be remembered at Mass and, if you are able, make an offering. We will keep all those envelopes close to the altar through the whole month of November and remember them at every Mass. May their souls, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God rest in peace.

CCW members will come together Sunday, October 23 at the 9:00 am Mass to celebrate National Council of Catholic Women Sunday. We invite all women of the parish to join us in prayer and thanksgiving for the wonderful blessings God has bestowed on our council.

San Pedro Center Program THE COMMUNION OF SAINTS: THE TIES THAT BIND
Wednesday, November 2, 2011
The month of November, sitting on the cusp of the Winter season, turns our thoughts and ritual prayer life to death and the promise of resurrection. Spend this day in prayer, reflection, creativity, and ritual as we remember our beloved dead and the great hope that "the bonds we forge in this life do not unravel in death. (Order of Christian Funerals, Prayer)

EVE RUPPS NEW BOOK Many of you will remember Deacon Dick Rupp who served the parish for many years until his death in 2007. He and his wife Eve lived in the heart of College Park for 33 years and often gave shelter to strangers and troubled people in their home. Eve has now written a little book about their experiences with some of their five hundred guests called Gods House. It is available through the usual booksellers such as Amazon or directly from the publisher www.trafford.com (both hard copy and e-book). Thank you, Eve, for recording a little of this great labor of love which set many people back on their feet.
