Running Head: MARRIAGE AND DIVORCE

Exercise #3 Marriage and Divorce Rates in the United States from 1990 to 2008 Samone Craig SOWK 300 Tuskegee University September 16, 2011

Abstract

Marriage and Divorce 2

Data tables were reviewed on the Marriage and Divorce rates in the United States from 1990 to 2008. This table shows a high number of marriages but also a high number of divorces within the same state. Due to the high cost of living the number of marriages and divorces may become a financial burden. After reviewing the table, California and Texas were found to be the states with the most marriages and divorces. These graphs show the results from these findings.

Magnitude of the Problem - Figure 1

Descriptive Discussion-

Marriage and Divorce 3

The graph above shows the divorce rates in Texas from 1990 to 2008. This problem is not severe at all but does show to be costly in some states. The state of Texas has a rather low cost of divorce which is not common.

Interpretative DiscussionThe state of Texas has rather low divorce rates from 1990 to 2008. The rates are higher in 1990 and lower 2008. As far as the costs, the state of Texas is not as affected as other states.

Scope of the Problem - Figure 2

Descriptive DiscussionThis graph depicts the scope of the problem and shows the populations affected. This problem affects all of the United States therefore all of the regions are affected as well. The graph however does not show those individuals choosing to cohabitate.

Interpretative DiscussionThe graph shows the percentage of the different states in their respective regions. The shows the South region having the most states in the burgundy. The South is followed by the Midwest in the purple. Then the West is represented in the green and Northeast in orange.

Changes in the Problem - Figure 3

Descriptive DiscussionThe graph shows the highest marriage and divorce rates in the years 1990, 2000, and 2008. It shows how marriages have fluctuated over the past 18 years. Most of the marriages have gone up and down, devoice rates have decreased drastically.

Interpretative DiscussionThe highest marriage rates were in 2008 but also had the lowest number of divorces. The lowest number of marriages came from the year 2000 and the second to lowest number of divorces. In 1990, there were a high number of marriages but also an equally high number of divorces.

Disparities in the Problem - Figure 4

Descriptive DiscussionAccording to my data table there were no disparities or differences in sex, race, or gender. This graph is based on the number of marriages and divorces in 1990 in California and Texas. These two states showed the most differences in marriages and divorces.

Marriage and Divorce 5

Interpretative DiscussionThe bar graph shows that California has the most marriages and the most divorces. Although there are major differences in the two states they both show that of the marriages there is a equal amount of the divorces. So even though people are getting married they are getting divorced just as fast.

Summary and Conclusion The different graphs presented show the magnitude, scope, changes, and disparities in marriages and divorces in the Unites States from 1990 to 2008. From reading the data tables and configuring these graphs I have found that California and Texas have the highest and lowest rates in marriages and divorces. All the regions have shown to be affected by the marriages and divorces. Overall, the marriage and divorce rates in the United States have drastic changes every year.
