Ephraimite of Zeredah, worked in the
service of Solomon. His mother's
name was Zeruah, a widow, he also
rebelled against the king.

Jeroboam and all the people of Israel
came, and spoke to Rehoboam,
saying:

2 And it came to pass, when
Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard of
it--for he was still in Egypt, where
he had fled from king Solomon, and
Jeroboam had been living in Egypt,

4 'Your father made our yoke
unbearable; now you must lighten
the work your father demanded from
us, if you do we will serve you.'
5 And he said to them: ' Go away
for three days, then come again to
me.' And the people departed.
6 And king Rehoboam asked advice
from the old men, that had stood
before Solomon his father while he
was alive, saying: 'What advice do
you give me. What should I answer
these people?'
7 And they spoke to him, saying: 'If
you be a servant to these people
today, and will serve them, and
answer them, and tell them good

with a heavy yoke, I will add to your

8 But he ignored the advice of the
old men which they had given him,
and asked for the advice of the
young men that he grew up with.
9 And he said to them: 'What advice
would you give, that we can answer
to this people, who spole to me,
saying: Make the yoke that your
father did put on us lighter?'
10 And the young men that grew up
with him said to him,: This is what
you should say to these people that
spoke to you, saying: Your father
made our yoke heavy, but you
should make it lighter; here is what
you should say to them: My little
finger is thicker than my father's
loins.

12 So Jeroboam and all the people
came to Rehoboam the third day, as
the king had ordered, saying: 'Come
to me again the third day.'

roughly, and ignored the advice of

17 But as for the children of Israel
that lived in the cities of Judah,
Rehoboam reigned over them. {P}

14 and he spoke according to the
advice of the young men, saying:
'My father made your yoke heavy,
but I will add to your yoke; my
father disciplined you with whips,
but I will discipline you with
scorpions.'
15 So the king did not listen to the
people; which happened the way the
LORD wanted so that He might
establish His word, which the LORD
told to Ahijah the Shilonite who told
it to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.
16 And when all Israel saw that the
king did not listen to them, the
people answered the king, saying:
'What portion have we in David?
neither have we a share in the son of
Jesse;now go to your tents, O Israel;
now take care of your own house,
David.' So Israel departed unto their
tents.

19 So Israel rebelled against the
house of David, unto this day.

“This is the reason that he rebelled against the king . Shlomo built the Millo and
repaired the breach in the (walls of) the City of David. He ( Yerovam) said to him
(Shlomo) your father left breaks in the walls of the city so that the people of Israel
could come on Pilgrimage . Now you have closed off those entrances so that
you can build a palace for Pharaoh’s daughter. “ That is the reason he rebelled .

Look up Yerovam Ben Nevat in the Jewish Encyclopedia:
http://www.jewishencyclopedia.com/articles/8599-jeroboam

There's a fascinating section of the Talmud which describes a
conversation between the Almighty and Yerovam ben Navat.
Yerovam was a Jewish King, a great and brilliant scholar, who
was ultimately responsible for turning the Jewish People to
idol worship. It was he who caused the division of the twelve
tribes into the Kingdoms of Yisrael (the ten tribes) and
Yehuda (the two tribes). Those ten lost tribes, the vast
majority of the Jewish People, are now vanished, invisible and
lost as Jews. That was Yerovam.
What caused someone so great to fall so far? There's a
fascinating character insight that the Talmud gives us in
Sanhedrin (102a): "Rebbe Abba said -- the Holy One, Blessed
is He, grabbed Yerovam by his garment and said to him 'Return
to your former self and I and you and the son of Yishai (King
David) will walk in Gan Eden. He (Yerovam) said: "Who's
going to be at the head?" "The son of Yishai will be at the
head." "If so, I don't want."
Why did Yerovam ask the Almighty who would be first? G-d
already said that "I and you and the son of Yishai will walk
in Gan Eden." G-d mentioned Yerovam first, indicating that
Yerovam would be before King David. If so, why then did
Yerovam ask who would be first?
Yerovam wanted a billboard two stories high with his name in
lights. He wanted G-d to spell it out. This was the
granddaddy of disputes over billing. It wasn't enough that he
would go first. He wanted his billing locked into the
contract.
