Essential Latin for the SAT

By Robert Michael Villa

This tutorial worksheet is intended to give you the basics of Latin prefixes and roots giving you an increased advantage during the Verbal portion of the SAT. If you have any training in one of the Romance languages, you will be at a greater advantage. You will encounter vocabulary that will need decoding and this worksheet gives you that extra edge without the rigors of a Latin discipline. Those that do decide to further study this fascinating language will gain the benefits of increased critical thinking and vocabulary skills. The best use of this worksheet is to go through the prefixes recognizing

the existing vocabulary you now know. It is also important to recognize how some words, as far stretched as it may seem, relate to their Latin roots. You will begin to notice these etymological roots during your other studies. Best of luck as you prepare for the SAT.

"I will say at once, quite firmly, that the best grounding for education is the Latin grammar. I say this not because Latin is traditional and medieval, but simply because even a rudimentary knowledge of Latin cuts down the labor and pains of learning almost any other subject by at least 50 percent." Dorthory Sayers -- National Review

The following Latin word prefixes will enhance your decoding skills of the vocabulary you will encounter on the Verbal portion of the SAT
