A Day in the Arena By Tessa McCann

There was once an extremely desperate lion limping through the forest in search of help. Until it stumbled upon a shepherd tending to his sheep. The young shepherd was startled at seeing the lion, but then realized after noticing a thorn in the lions paw that it was quite unable to attack him because the lion was in so much pain. Instead of running away from the lion the shepherd pitied the lion, he approached the lion and gently removed the thorn, which made the lion so happy it nearly skipped back into the forest. Years later, the shepherd was falsely accused of a crime that he did not commit by the cruel Nero. The shepherd's sentence was to be thrown into a arena filled with hungry lions, which was watched by most of the cities inhabitants, and viewed as a sport. When the young shepherd entered the cage, he tried not to ponder on the thought that he was about to die, he looked up to see a lion come out of the cage but for a minute nothing came out, he stood frozen with fear because, in that minute he could only hear the roars, and growls of a hungry lion. Then a weak but still terrifying lion walked slowly from out of the darkness. As it approached the lion recognized the shepherd, and instead of attacking, it actually placed its head on the young shepherds lap. Nero after hearing this was amazed because the shepherd left the arena unharmed, which had never happened before now. He ordered the release of both the lion and the young shepherd who after that never saw each other again but they also never forgot the day they both survived a day in the arena.
