Chapter 15 Simulation Modelling

Additional compulsory reading: Operations management Stevenson Chapter 18 (supplement) 9th Edition

1. Go through what simulation is all about. 2. The different types of models that you get (i.e. mathematical, schematic & physical models) 3. Steps in the simulation process (Fig 15.1) 4. Advantages and disadvantages of simulation 5. Important: Go through on how to develop an algorithm flowchart describing a simulation model. You must know the appropriate symbols to be used. (Ref pages. 856 Solution (a) & page 861 Stevenson text 9th edition). Please go through this for exam purposes

6. Monte Carlo simulation: a. Note the process in developing a monte carlo simulation model b. Follow Harrys tire example. Note how to develop probabilities and cumulative probabilities. c. Random number intervals must be in the same format as the random numbers to be used (i.e. 2 digit random numbers (table 15.5) and 2 digit intervals (ref table 15.4 4th column) d. The final table must be indicative of the requirements of the problem on hand e. Go through the Simkin hardware store. Note the use of 2 tables i.e. 1 for daily demand and the other for expected lead time. f. Follow how the algorithm was built up on page 660 Fig. 15.3 and the final solution table pg. 661 (table 15.9) g. Go through the problem on the Port of Orleans was an exam question at some point. 7. Computer modelling Go through program 15.4A; B Take not of the VLOOKUP function

8. Follow the algorithm on page 668 Fig. 15.4 9. Attempt to copy program 15.5A & B take note of the excel functionality regarding the: RAND command VLOOKUP command MAX command
