. Bioengineering encompasses two closely related fields of interest: the
application of engineering sciences to understand how animals and plants
function; and the application of engineering technologies to design and
develop new devices, including diagnostic or therapeutic instrumentation, or
the formulation of synthetic biomaterials, the design of artificial tissues and
organs, and the development of new drug delivery systems.

Because other engineering disciplines also address living organisms (e.g., prosthetics in
mechanical engineering), the term biological engineering can be applied more broadly to include
agricultural engineering and biotechnology
