Evaluation of Post Doc applicants: Seismic studies of arctic rift basins and reservoirs

The Department of Arctic Geology of the University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS) has announced three vacancies for a Post Doc and two PhD positions within the petroleum geology and bedrock team, closely linked to the Longyearbyen C02 lab project and the Norwegian SUCCESS Center. The application deadline was October 25th, 2011, with announcements at the UNIS webpage, Earthworks.com and other public Norwegian databases. During the period of the announcement, Lundin Norway has offered Snorre Olaussen another fully funded 3-year position; a Post Doc that addresses "Lower Cretaceous clastic wedges of the North Atlantic, Barents Shelf- Svalbard and East-Northeast Greenland region. This position has a focus that is fairly similar to the announced Post Doc position, hence the committee will also consider if any of the candidates for the Post Doc position could fill the Lundin Norway Post Doc. This evaluation is presented after the announced position. The following committee's was appointed by the UN IS Director for assessing the applicants for the Post Doc position(s): Chairman: Alvar Braathen Members: Snorre Olaussen, Maria Jensen As the funds are available, the committee started working on the applicants the 8th November 2011. The work at hand starts with a first assessment of the applicants, resulting in a short list. Then parts or the entire committee, supported with one person from the Administration, will undertake interviews (telephone or Skype) with the strongest candidates, before a final conclusion and recommendation is presented to the UNIS Director. Key aspects in the announcement text are: 1) Holding a PhD at October 25th 2011 is obligatory 2) Signals suggesting a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual 3) Express strong academic ambitions (publication record etc., including "in press" but not "in prep." articles) and has the ability to work successfully within a large project team 4) Willingness to take a leading role around the seismic studies undertaken by the team. 5) Ability to be responsible forthe new UNIS seismic interpretation lab, i.e., has a welldeveloped understanding of seismic interpretation software 6) Field experience 7) Physical capability In the following, all candidates will be evaluated with basis in these 7 points. Then there is a summary of the candidates as a basis for the shortlisting.
