Dear Fisk Students, As the semester closes, I am certain that you are still excited after participating in our Homecoming weekend, which included a victory by the Bulldogs in Men’s Basketball, a close contest for the Lady Bulldogs, a concert featuring platinum recording artist Jeremih, the NPHC Greek Step Show, and the coronation of Miss Fisk University. Homecoming at Fisk is also an important part of Fisk’s goal to grow enrollment. During the Homecoming Open House hosted by Fisk from November 17-19, the University hosted a record 231 high school seniors and juniors, of which, 191 seniors met qualifications and were accepted to Fisk for next year. Over the last two years, this event has averaged a yield of 73% of prospective students who eventually enrolled at Fisk. The increase in attendance for the open house reflects the utilization of new recruitment strategies such as stronger alumni club collaboration, and emphasis on relationships with feeder groups and with counselors and school administrators at high schools who have produced students who enrolled at Fisk and ultimately graduated. Also, as we move toward the beginning of the Spring 2012 semester, I write to share important information points regarding Fisk’s accreditation status. Please note that in December 2009, Fisk announced that the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACS CoC) reaffirmed the University’s accreditation. As of December 2011, Fisk University continues to be accredited with good cause and has been placed on probation. The December 6, 2011 press release from the University regarding our accreditation status is also enclosed for your review. The University’s excellent academic programs remain eligible for federal and state grants and our students will continue to receive federal and state financial aid. I have also included an information sheet titled “What Everyone Should Know About Fisk University” which highlights some of the facts about Fisk and other third party accolades that demonstrate Fisk’s viability and the academic prowess of our students. A few important facts noted in the attachment about Fisk University include: U.S. News & World Report’s Top Colleges and Universities 2012, continue to include Fisk in the prestigious Tier One at #144 of the 1,400 liberal arts institutions in the United States. For the 20th consecutive year, the Princeton Review included Fisk on its 2012 list of “The Best 373 Colleges” in the nation and on its list of “The Best Southeastern Colleges.” The Washington Monthly, September/October 2011, ranked Fisk as the #1 Liberal Arts Institution in Research in the South and the 16th Best Liberal Arts University in the nation in its “Top Liberal Arts Colleges and Universities” rankings. Fisk is in the top 10 percent of the 250 leading liberal arts institutions based on social mobility, research and service. Fisk ranked among the top 25 percent of 650 higher education institutions listed in Forbes’ 2011Top College List. For 19 consecutive years, Money Magazine has included Fisk on its “100 Best College Buys” list. The most recent National Science Foundation study reveals that Fisk alumni earned more doctoral degrees in the natural sciences than African-American graduates from any other college or university in the nation. This same study ranks Fisk in the 77th percentile of all institutions in the United States receiving federal science and engineering research funds and indicates that Fisk is the number one producer of African Americans who obtain their master’s degrees in physics. The study also ranks Fisk among the top 50 institutions in the nation whose graduates earn Ph.D. degrees in science and engineering.
Fisk Student Letter, P.2 Please remember that a completed Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is required each year for scholarship consideration and renewal. To add Fisk to your FAFSA for the 2012-2013 school year, please visit www.fafsa.ed.gov and add Fisk using school code 003490. Adding Fisk to your FAFSA will assist you and your family by providing a clear picture of your financial aid award package, which eases the process of registration and financial clearance so that you may focus on coursework and leadership activities when classes begin next Fall. Again, please remember that adding Fisk to your FAFSA allows us to quickly generate a complete award letter (with items such as HOPE or Pell Grants) in addition to any scholarship offers to explain your family’s financial picture. I also write to remind you that you are able to take advantage of a “first-class” faculty that works assiduously to prepare each student for the many challenges ahead after graduation. Fisk students can graduate with a degree from one of our sixteen majors or five dual-degree programs with Vanderbilt University, Case Western Reserve University, Meharry Medical College, The University of Tennessee-Knoxville, or Howard University; or one of our two “Bridge” programs with Vanderbilt University in physics and MSN Nursing. You can also participate in one of Fisk University’s ten varsity sports. Fisk’s Men’s and Women’s
Basketball, Women’s Softball, Volleyball & Men’s & Women’s Tennis and Men’s and Women’s Track & Field and Cross Country competed in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). Fisk students have the opportunity to join nine National Pan-Hellenic Council Fraternities or Sororities, participate in NAIA Athletics or Intramural Programs, or become active in the Student Government Association or one of the other sixty-four student organizations. Students may also work as a writer or photographer for the Fisk Forum news magazine or as a contributor to the Fisk Oval Yearbook.
As you prepare for life after college, the Office of Career Development and Leadership is available to assist students and to provide important training such as resume writing, appropriate attire, and other career planning strategies. The Career Development and Leadership Office has helped leverage Fisk’s relationships and provided guidance to students pursuing graduate school and seeking internship & employment opportunities across the country and abroad. To celebrate student success and highlight student accomplishments, I have also included a copy of the most recent Career Development and Leadership Highlights for your review. Please visit the Career Center in the lower level of Spence Hall today or email Mrs. Natara Garvin, Director at email@example.com or Ms. Tashaye Byrdsong, Career Development Specialist, at firstname.lastname@example.org. For 145 years, Fisk has cultivated a community of scholars and leaders whose accomplishments are known throughout the world. Please accept my gratitude for your support of Fisk University. I am grateful to serve you and your family as Fisk continues this tradition. Sincerely Yours,
Jason L. Meriwether
