Half a Gift I was ten years old and my brother Nick was 14. Mothers Day that year was to be exciting day for both of us. We were going to buy a gift for our mother. It was our first gift for her. We were very poor and such a gift was not usual. But Nick and I had been lucky enough to earn a little money working at some odd jobs. As we thought about the surprise, Nick and I got more and more excited. When we told our father, he patted our heads proudly. Its a fine idea, he said. It will make your mother happy. From this tone, we knew what he was thinking. He head been able to serve our mother very little in their life together. She worked hard all day. Working and taking care of us. She washed all the family clothes. And she did all these things silently. She did not laugh much. But when she smiled, it was a beautiful thing and worth waiting for. What are you going to give her/ Father asked. We are going to give separate presents, I answered. You tell mother, Nick said to my father, so she can enjoy thinking about it. My father said, Thats a big thought to come from so small a head. And its wise. Nick blushed with joy. Then he put a hand on my shoulder and said, Joe, thought of it, too. No, I said, I didnt. but my present will make up for that. For the nest few days we enjoyed the secret game with my mother. A shining look came to her

face as she worked. She pretended not to know and she smiled often. The air was full of love. Nick and I talked about what to buy. Lets not tell each other what we are getting, said Nick. He was tired of awaiting for me to make up my mind. After careful thought, I bought a comb that had little shining stones on it. The stones looked like diamonds. Nick liked my gift very much but wouldnt tell about his. We will give the gifts at a certain moment I have picked, he said. What moment? I asked, puzzled. I cant tell because it has something to do with my gift. And dont ask me again what it is. The next morning my mother got ready to wash the floors. Nick nodded to me and we ran to get our gifts. When I came back, Mother was on her knees, wearily scrubbing the floor. She was mopping up the dirty water with old rags. It was the job she hated the most. Then Nick returned with his present. Mothers face went pale as she looked at it. It was a new scrubbing pail with a wringer and a fresh mop! A scrubbing pail. She said, her voice almost breaking. A Mothers Day gift of a scrubbing pail! Tears sprang in Nicks eyes. Without a word, he picked up the pail and tramped down the stairs. I put the comb in my pocket and ran after him. He was crying and I began to cry, too. On my way down, we met Father. Nick could not talk, so I explained. Ill take it back, sobbed Nick. No, said Father, taking the pail. It is a wonderful gift. I should have thought of it myself. We went upstairs again. In the kitchen, Mother was still scrubbing. Without a word, Father soaked up the puddle of dirty water with the mop. Then, using the foot wringer on the bucket, he neatly squeezed it dry. You didnt let Nick finish, he said to her, Part of the gift was that Nick was going to wash the floor from now on. Isnt it that so Nick? With a blush of shame, Nick understood the lesson. Yes, oh. Yes, he said in slow, eager tone. Mother said it understandingly. It is too heavy work for a boy of fourteen. It was then that I understood how smart Father was. Oh, he said., not with this wonderful wringer and scrubbing pail. It so much easier. Your hands stay clean and your knees dont hurt. Again, Father quickly showed how the wringer worked. Mother said, looking sadly at Nick, Oh a woman can be so foolish! she kissed him and felt better. Then Father asked me, What is your gift?
