# Teacher: Elizabeth Clayton

Course: Math 7

Dates: November, 2007; approximately 8 days depending on level

Unit Title: Math Course 2: Rational Numbers, Measurement, and Precision

Essential Questions:
Why do I need to understand how to measure with precision?
What situation in my life will require me to compare rational numbers that are written in
different forms?
How is converting metric and customary units helpful to me?
When, in my life, will I need to use significant digits?
How can I determine if I truly understand metric system, customary measurements, rational
numbers, and measuring with precision?

Objectives/Student Outcomes:
SWBAT solve problems involving:
comparing and/or ordering rational numbers
measuring using significant digits
measuring with precision
using metric measurements
using customary measurements
converting from one unit of measurement to another
SWBAT mathematically explain their method of solving
SWBAT solve problems involving multiple objectives

NJ CCCS:
¦MA.7.4.2.D.3} Recognize that all measurements oI continuous quantities are approximations.
(NJ Core Curr )
¦MA.7.4.1.A.1.a} Extend understanding oI the number system by constructing meanings Ior the
Iollowing (unless otherwise noted, all indicators Ior grade 7 pertain to these sets oI numbers as
well). Rational numbers(NJ Core Curr )
¦MA.7.4.1.A.2} Demonstrate a sense oI the relative magnitudes oI numbers. (NJ Core Curr )
¦MA.7.4.1.A.3} Understand and use ratios, proportions, and percents (including percents greater
than 100 and less than 1) in a variety oI situations. (NJ Core Curr )
¦MA.7.4.1.A.4} Compare and order numbers oI all named types. (NJ Core Curr )
¦MA.7.4.1.A.5} Use whole numbers, Iractions, decimals, and percents to represent equivalent
Iorms oI the same number. (NJ Core Curr )
¦MA.7.4.1.A.6} Understand that all Iractions can be represented as repeating or terminating
decimals. (NJ Core Curr )
¦MA.7.4.1.B.1.b} Use and explain procedures Ior perIorming calculations with integers and all
number types named above with: Mental math(NJ Core Curr )
¦MA.7.4.1.B.1.c} Use and explain procedures Ior perIorming calculations with integers and all
number types named above with: Calculator(NJ Core Curr )
¦MA.7.4.2.D.1} Solve problems requiring calculations that involve diIIerent units oI
measurement within a measurement system (e.g., 4'3" plus 7'10" equals 12'1"). (NJ Core Curr )
¦MA.7.4.2.D.2} Select and use appropriate units and tools to measure quantities to the degree oI
precision needed in a particular problem-solving situation. (NJ Core Curr )
¦MA.7.4.5.A.1} Learn mathematics through problem solving, inquiry, and discovery. (NJ Core
Curr )
¦MA.7.4.5.B.4} Use the language oI mathematics to express mathematical ideas precisely. (NJ
Core Curr )
¦MA.7.4.5.C.4} Apply mathematics in practical situations and in other disciplines. (NJ Core
