Rabbi’s Corner
It is exciting to think that this coming week we get
to begin the celebration of Channuka iy”h!
As in the last two years, I have prepared a booklet
called “Bring Light to the Night.” This is a learning project
that is meant to help families add a Torah component to the
celebration of the holiday. After all, one of the most apro-
pos and beautiful symbols of the Torah is light as the pasuk
says in Mishlei: “ki ner mitzvah v’Torah ohr” “a mitzvah is
like a candle and Torah is like light.” Therefore, what better
way to mark the holiday of lights than to fill the room not
just with the light of the candles but the light of the Torah
as well? I will be sending out the “Bring Light to the Night”
packet this week by email and it will also be available to
download off our website so feel free to print it out and use
it every night when you light.
ALSO – as a new feature this year I will be sending
out a short video shiur to watch while the candles are burn-
ing as well!
I would like to review some of the basic halachot of lighting
Channuka candles:
• If possible, all members of the family should gather
and be present at the kindling of the Chanukah lights.
According to the Ashkenazic tradition each member
of the family, all generations and all genders, should
be encouraged to purchase, prepare and light their
own Menorah.
• The preferred way to perform the mitzvah of lighting
the Chanukah lamps is with pure olive oil and cotton
wicks, since their light is pure, and it recalls the light
of the Golden Menorah in the Temple which was lit
with pure olive oil. However, all other oils and wicks
are also permissible; purity of the light and lack of
flickering are the most important characteristics. Can-
dles made of wax or paraffin are also permitted.
• It is nice to try to have each Menorah owned and pre-
pared every night by the person who will light it. The
proper number of candles, or wicks suspended in oil
should be placed in the Menorah from right to left -
with today's flame being the last one set up and the
first one light (left to right). The candles or wicks
should be placed in a straight row, and even; that is,
none being higher or lower than the others, none re-
ceding or protruding, and none in a circle.
Shabbat Shalom! Rabbi Weinberg
SAFETY AT YIWH:
If you drive to shul on erev Shabbat and are in a rush
PLEASE slow down when entering shul driveway. Better to
be a few seconds late for mincha than to endanger those
walking along the side of the driveway."

House Committee Update
The House Committee has been busy and would
like to update the Congregation about the following.
Firstly, thank you to all for participating in our
highly successful chair campaign. We exceeded our
goals. The chair order has been put on temporary hold
for now due to the water damage sustained in the social
hall from the recent storm. We currently have a pending
claim with our insurance company that may allow us to
rethink the project downstairs and perhaps allow us to
look at ordering a different type of chair.
Our outside shingle roof is showing signs of fa-
tigue. Some small leaks have developed necessitating
repairs. The board has approved the work getting
done. We are likewise moving forward with planning for
some significant upgrades to the Sanctuary. A generous
sponsor has agreed to replace all the carpeting up-
stairs. We are also pricing needed repairs and painting to
our ceiling and walls. A committee is being formed that
will research these projects and make recommendations
to the board regarding materials used and cost.. In turn
these plans will be presented to the Congregation. We
likewise need to look into repairs for our outside front
portico which has deteriorating columns.
The House committee will keep the Congregation
aware of these projects with periodic updates. Please
feel free to contact me with any constructive, thoughts
ideas and feedback Your comments would be most wel-
come. Barry Gordon, House Chairman

TWO Upcoming Shabbat Dinners
Rabbi David Silverberg (www.vbm-torah.org)
Rashi, commenting to the opening verse of Parashat Vayeshev, famously cites a passage from Bereishit
Rabba (84:3):
“Yaakov sought to dwell in tranquility, but then the anguish of Yosef immediately pounced on him. The right-
eous seek to dwell in tranquility, but the Almighty says: “Is it not enough for the righteous that which is pre-
pared for them in the next world, that they seek to live in tranquility even in this world?”
Many scholars and writers have raised the question of why the Midrash felt that Yaakov, and other righteous
people, were wrong for seeking tranquility, and how we are to understand the Midrash’s response.
We might suggest that Chazal here do not intend to criticize Yaakov – or the tzadikim – for the natural quest
for serenity, but rather seek to convey the basic lesson that these aspirations are seldom fully met in this world….Of
course, we all seek and yearn for peaceful, tranquil, pleasant lives, and we are certainly entitled to harbor such hopes
and pursue this goal. But Chazal alert us to the reality that complete shalva (“tranquility”) is rarely experienced in this
world. All people, at virtually every stage of life, endure some forms of hardship, pressures or disappointments. Even
the righteous among us, whom we would naturally consider deserving of a bump-free road along the journey of life,
are, like the rest of us, beset by personal travails of one type or another…
…The Midrash’s warning is not intended to present us with a grim, disheartening view of life. To the contrary,
it serves as a source of encouragement, reminding us that our pressures and struggles are simply par for the
course. If we expect a perfectly smooth ride, we will meet with frustration and disappointment; but if we expect hur-
dles along the road, then when we confront them, we will have the resolve and confidence we need to successfully
surmount them.
