Introduction
ThischapterdiscussesthestatusofIslamandMuslimsinBulgariawithinthreebroadhistoricalperiods;fromthemiddleofthefourteenthcenturytoBulgarianindependencefromOttomanrulein1878;from1878totheendoftheSecondWorldWar;andfromtheendoftheSecondWorldWartothepresent.AlthoughtheprimaryfocusisontheexperienceofTurkishMuslims,thefindingsareapplicabletotheexperienceofGypsyandBulgarianMuslims(Pomaks)aswell.ThepresentethnicandreligiousmosaicintheBalkansistheproductofmillenniaofmigratoryinvasions.ThecentrallocationoftheBalkansbetweenEuropeandAsiaandtheexistenceofawell-developedroadsystemforthecarryingofmilitary,ad-ministrative,commercialandculturaltrafficsinceRomantimesencouragedsuchmovements.
