Mága Zoltán: New Year’s Concert

The Palace of Arts has been staging a New Year’s concert since 2008. Each year, Haydn’s wonderful oratorio, first performed in 1798, is played to mark the occasion. „The Creation is something we need,” writes András Batta of the piece, „we desire that someone shows us the beauty of the world once again, and imbues in us the feeling that it is good to live on this earth.” This is why The Creation is a timeless anthem for the new beginning. The first New Year’s Concert also celebrated Hungary’s accession to the Schengen Zone – the dawn of a spirit of brotherhood similar to that so cherished by Beethoven. The returning master of the New Year’s concert is Ádám Fischer, a man who knows Haydn’s music inside and out. Each year, he invites a different orchestra to play this iconic masterpiece of European music. On previous occasions, he has conducted the Austro-Hungarian Haydn Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra in the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall, each time supported by outstanding choirs and soloists. The Palace of Arts has invited La Scintilla to kick off 2012 in Budapest. The orchestra, formed in 1996, specialises in the choral music of the 17th and 18th century and has worked with the likes of Nikolaus Harnoncourt, William Christie and Ádám Fischer. La Scintilla’s leader and concertmaster is Ada Pesch, a former student of Josef Gingold. She is also director of the Ernen Baroque Music Festival in Switzerland and a teacher at the Juilliard Music School in New York. Date: 1. January 2012. Ticket: 2800 Huf – 9900 Huf

It was as a natural scientist that Lajos Bíró (1856-1931) arrived in German New Guinea, but he had also been commissioned to collect ethnological objects. Europeans had first taken possession of New Guinea barely 10 years before Bíró’s arrival which meant that researchers were able to document a culture relatively untouched by western civilisation. His collecting work brought him very close to the Papuans. He learnt a number of local languages and through his wives there were times when he lived in their villages rather than in the European settlement. It was because of these close ties that in a number of cases the Papuans asked him to settle their conflicts with the authorities. The full Bíró collection, including the group of objects from Huon Gulf is outstanding not only for its documentation but also for its quantity. Its 5,519 items represent more than a third of the total Oceania collection containing 14,600 items (the museum’s second largest non-European collection) Date: 30.09.2011. - 29.01.2012.
