In 1844, 23 yr old henry lehman, the son of a cattle merchant emigrated to the united states from rimpar, Bavaria. He settled in the Montgomery, Alabama, where he opened a dry goods store, under the name of h.lehman. after the arrival of emanuel and mayer lehman, the firm was renamed from h. lehman to h.lehman and bro and finally lehman brothers. They accepted raw cotoon from customers as payment for merchandise, eventually beginning a second business trading in cotton.
