Creating a Grade Item (Column) in Moodle

This tutorial will walk through the steps needed to create a gradebook column for an assessment which takes place outside of Moodle. Moodle can manage assignment submissions (essays, journals, forums) and in some cases (like a quiz) automatically grade student responses. However, there are times when the assessment takes place outside of Moodle (an in class presentation or credit given for experiential learning) and to keep the gradebook in sync, a column must be created to store the grades.

Go to Grades

After logging in to Moodle and selecting your course. On the left side of the screen, click on GRADES.

Choose Simple View

SIMPLE VIEW is the best way to add grade items (i.e. a column in your gradebook) or add a category (a way to group similar grades which affords options like -- 'Drop the Lowest grade').

Fill in Details for Grade Item

Name the Grade Item and select SAVE CHANGES when complete. Your new item is now listed in the gradebook.

To Enter Grades

Go to GRADER REPORT, this view provides a spreadsheet with all student grades.

ENTER GRADES

You may enter numeric grades in the column. Select the 'notepad' icon (to the top right of the grade box) to enter feedback. Students often appreciate the text feedback as it provides detail about the grade. Moodle now displays the syllabus and even recognizes it is a Microsoft Word file. For more information on Moodle, view the Trinity Moodle FAQ. If you have questions, feel free to create a help ticket and the Moodle Support team will respond to your query. Happy Moodling!
