We often talk about anxiety as some sort of genetic issue, and also as
something based on traumas in childhood. But long term stress is
probably more often the root of anxiety disorders. The constant
demands of living in poverty, discrimination, war, and abuse are a part
of daily life for millions of people around the world.
Agoraphobia
Most people who present to [are seen by] mental health specialists
develop agoraphobia after the onset of panic disorder (American
Psychiatric Association, 1998). Agoraphobia is best
understood as an adverse behavioral outcome of
repeated panic attacks and the subsequent worry,
preoccupation, and avoidance (Barlow, 1988).
