Week 6: Experiential Exercise: GLOBE Leaders Behaviors Instrument 1.

Your average scores reflect your model of what it means to be an outstanding leader. In the GLOBE research, the charismatic/value-based leadership dimension emerged as the most strongly endorsed contributor, worldwide, to acceptable and effective leadership. Is your score on this leadership dimension consistent with this finding? Please explain your answer. Charismatic/Value based leadership is defined as visionary, inspirational, decisive, has integrity (Hellriegel & Slocum, Chapter 10, Leading Effectively: New Perspectives, Pg. 309, 2010). My score for Charismatic/Value-Based leadership is 5.28 which indicates that this type of leadership slightly contributes to a person being an outstanding leader. My analysis for this overall score is as follows: Item #7 Improvement Oriented My score for this behavior is 6 (contributes somewhat) as I feel that seeking continuous improvement is a factor to be considered but not strong enough to contribute to outstanding leadership. Item #8 Inspirational My score for this behavior is 7 (contributes greatly) as inspiration/motivation is vital to keep the team interested in their tasks. This helps the team to work hard and increase belief in the leadership. Item #9 Anticipatory My score for this behavior is 5 (contributes slightly) as anticipation and forethought is good for planning the future, but not everything can be predicted ahead of time as there might be other factors that might come into play. For example, in construction projects the project manager prepares a schedule forecasting the events from start to completion, but it is a projection which can go off track due to weather elements, lead time in procurement of material, labor issues etc Item #10 Trustworthy My score for this behavior is 7 (contributes greatly) as trust is an important factor in doing business. An employee looks for trust in his/her managers actions and words which is an important factor to keep employees motivated and avoid frustration. The same applies to customers as they strongly rely on managers who can keep his/her word (e.g.) if a Team Leader in an Architectural Firm promises his client that drawings will be ready by a certain date and achieves the target, the client is encouraged to come back to the firm for repeat services and employees trust the managers judgment to allot adequate time to complete the project so that they do not have to burn the midnight oil. Item #12 Just My score for this behavior is 7 (contributes greatly) as ethics, being fair and honest are very important principles in business and an ethical leader is a good example to his/her subordinates and team. Item #20 Encouraging My score for this behavior is 6 (contributes somewhat) as encouraging subordinates is essential but not critical to maintain the teams good spirits. Most times manager are very busy and do not have the time to sit down with employees to offer advise but I do feel that managers must take the time to recognize and applaud good work even if it is a simple Well Done. Item #30 Intellectually Simulating My score for this behavior is 5 (contributes slightly) as encouraging new ideas, challenging beliefs and preventing stereotypes in teams help prevent boredom but it is not a great contributor to leadership behavior as

most companies have set strategies to run their teams, it takes time and a lot of research to develop, analyze and implement new ideas. Hence Charismatic/Value Base leadership is essential as it brings out positive energy in teams, encourages new ideas and provides fresh outlook to improve business and work environments. 2. The team oriented leadership dimension is also endorsed worldwide as a strong contributor to outstanding leadership. Is your score on this leadership dimension consistent with this finding? Please explain your answer. Team-Oriented leadership is defined as collaborative, diplomatic, considerate (Hellriegel & Slocum, Chapter 10, Leading Effectively: New Perspectives, Pg. 309, 2010). My overall score for this behavior is 6.42 which indicates that the behavior is close to a great contributor. Teamwork is the essence of success for any team to fulfill goals and achieve set targets. Though Charismatic/ Value Based leadership is valuable but cannot be achieved by one person, a goal/vision needs a team to accomplish. Following is my analysis for the overall score: Item #1 Diplomatic My score for this behavior is 7 (contributes greatly) as it is important to maintain good interpersonal relations and communicate ideas between team members. Item #11 Worldly My score for this behavior is 6 (contributes somewhat) as it is good to maintain a broader outlook and not worry about materialistic issues but it is not a critical element to achieve teamwork. It is good to think outside the box, but not at all instances. Item #13 Win-Win Problem Solver My score for this behavior is 6 (contributes somewhat) as identifying solutions that everyone can agree to depends on each situation and at times there might not be a solution that everyone can agree upon. Solutions might have to be in the best interest of solving the problem and not ones individual perception. Item #15 Integrator My score for this behavior is 6 (contributes somewhat) as working cohesively is an important factor for teams to be productive and operate smoothly. There are always bad apples in a team who no matter what might be difficult to get along with others in which case integration may not be the solution. Item #17 Loyal My score for this behavior is 7 (contributes greatly) as supportive leaders who stand with team members in tough times come across as empathetic and gain the support and trust of subordinates who in future will be willing to accept/trust their managers ideas. This helps in achieving goals collectively and to try new and innovative options with less resistance. Item #19 Collaborative My score for this behavior is 7 (contributes greatly) as a leader who facilitates collective working in a group via group discussions, idea boards etc...where he/she seeks opinions from others and implements the ideas finds more success. Item #27 Consultative My score for this behavior is 6 (contributes somewhat) as consulting with others before taking action is good for managers to learn about different

ideas/opinions on the subject which might bring out some elements he/she may have missed. Consulting others may not occur always and depends on the nature of the issue (i.e.) might be regarding a employee that cannot be discussed with other team members or lack on time (i.e.) a manager might have to act quickly on something and might not have adequate time on hands to gather others opinions. A good example of many of the behavior types mentioned above is the case of Richard Branson Chairman of Virgin Group who has great leadership qualities and is admired by one and all. He displays many vital qualities of good leadership such as listening to people around him, taking risks, striving to provide quality service, trying new ideas, loyalty and trusting his team (Hellriegel & Slocum, Chapter 10, Leading Effectively: New Perspectives, Pg. 305 & 306, 2010).
