DCSM DIRECTIVE AND PROCEDURE 1.03 MEDIA AWARENESS Reference: DAOD 2008-0 INTRO 1.

In the performance of their duties, JPSU personnel may be seen as a potential media story of interest. The media can be, at times, very demanding. Caution must be exercised to ensure that any information provided is accurate. In the course of their duties, JPSU personnel represent the interests of the Department, and must remain cognizant of that fact. Whenever possible, the services of trained subject matter experts should be sought. PROCESS 2. CF/DND Public Affairs Policy is described in DAOD 2008-0. If approached by the media, CF members and DND staff may agree to be interviewed to discuss their own job or area of expertise, if they wish. Regardless of rank or level, CF members and DND employees are accountable to their chain of command for the accuracy and currency of the information they make available to the public. JPSU personnel must respect the principles of privacy, operational security, judicial process, and federal law while dealing with the media. Personnel should also not speculate or offer personal opinions on policy. 3. If possible, media should be referred to the National Defence Media Liaison Office at (613) (613) 996-2353 or 1-866-377-0811, who will then coordinate further contact with the media. 4. Any interaction with media should be reported through the chain of command to the Regional JPSU Adjutant. The Regional JPSU Adjutant will in turn contact DGPFSS Public Affairs Officer, with an info copy to DCO JPSU. Local public affairs staff will also be informed, when applicable. KEY FACTORS 5. In the event of potential media interest, it is important to react in a timely fashion, and ensure that accurate information is provided. Ensure that the name, organization, and contact info for the media contact is recorded, and that details of any media involvement are reported as soon as administratively possible. 6. Requests for JPSU personnel to participate in public events should be directed through the local chain of command to the Regional JPSU Adjutant. Public Affairs involvement will be determined on a case-by-case basis.
