What does AB 12 do for (you)th?

Extends foster care for youth who are eligible
y 18 year olds who are in foster care as of 1.1.2012 can

remain in foster care and are entitled to benefits up until they turn 19
y Up to age 20 starting 1.1.2013 y With approval, up to age 21 starting 1.1.2014

Why extend foster care for (you)th?

y 18 is to young to be forced into living completely

independently

y Extending foster care gives youth who want it extra

support

What are the benefits of AB12?

y Promotes an increase in life-long relationships for

foster youth
y Enables youth to maintain a safety net of support

while living independently
y Youth will be better prepared for a successful

transition into adulthood

What do (you)th need to do to stay eligible for AB12?

y Completing high school or equivalent program y Enrolling in college, community college or vocational

education program y Employed at least 80 hours a month y Participating in a program or activity designed to remove barriers to employment y Unable to do one of the above requirements because of a medical condition Youth must meet at least one of the above requirements stay eligible for AB12

What are (you)th responsible to do for AB12?

y Meet with a social worker or probation

officer monthly y Attend court hearings every 6 months y Sign an agreement to meet requirements y Agree to work with the social worker or probation officer to meet the goals of the ³Transitional Independent Living Case Plan´

Where can (you)th live? Part 1

Remain in or return to*: y A home approved by the court
y Group home placement (with exceptions) y Transitional Housing Program (THP) ± Plus

Foster Care (not currently available, may be in Summer of 2012)
*These decisions will be made collaboratively with the youth and their social worker or probation officer

y Supervised Independent Living Setting

Such as: 
An

apartment Room and board arrangements College dorms Room mate situation

Do (you)th have to participate in AB12?

y Remaining in foster care after age 18 is

voluntary. Foster youth can decide to leave at age 18, or any time after turning 18.
y A foster youth who decides to leave can

decide to re-enter foster care at any time prior to turning 20 (or 21 if the age limit is extended)

How AB12 would have helped me«

y Money to help secure a place to live y Support to manage my finances y Transition over time into taking on the

responsibilities of an adult
