PREREQUISITE MODULES:

AIMS/OBJECTIVES ∗ To introduce the fundamental concepts of digital electronics based on combinational logic. Numerous example applications will be introduced within the lectures and laboratory sessions.

SYLLABUS [Introduction]. Digital and analogue systems: how they differ. The importance of digital systems in modern electronics. Digital systems as the building blocks of computers. Definition of SSI, MSI, LSI, VLSI. [Number Systems]. Unsigned binary, octal, hex, sign-magnitude, 1’s complement, 2’s complement. BinaryCoded Decimal (BCD). Conversions between number system representations. [The basic digital circuit elements]. AND, OR, NOT, NAND, NOR, Exclusive OR. Black box characterisation of their behaviour in terms of logic levels. Include basic example applications. [Truth tables and Boolean functions]. Elementary Boolean algebra, using Boolean algebra for simplification, DeMorgan’s theorems. [Combinational logic using Karnaugh maps]. Boolean Algebra and functions. Sufficiency of NAND and NOR. Combinational logic design using K-maps, with 2,3 and 4 variables. Small design examples. [Simple digital circuits]. Elementary adders, encoders, multiplexers. Small real-world examples using, for example, 4 to 2 line encoder, multiplexers. [MSI] circuit elements: decoders, data selectors, encoders, parity circuits. [Introduction to programmable logic]. Introduce programmable logic. Using a PAL as a simple PLD. Demonstrate programming of a PAL for 3-variable logic function and compare with a discrete implementation. PRIME TEXT(S) Floyd, T. L., Digital Fundamentals. 6th ed. Prentice Hall. 1997.
