Fire truck purchase on ballot
By SEAN PATRICK MURPHY
The Tabernacle Sun
For Deputy Fire Chief John
Welling, getting a new fire truck
is a no-brainer.
This proposal is to add a
pumper, which will put us in com-
pliance with the ISO (insurance
services office, which rates fire
departments capabilities, such as
personnel, apparatus and other
things) study which indicated we
need three Class A pumpers for
the fire-flow requirements in Tab-
ernacle, Welling said. Current-
ly we have two engines.
According to Welling, this will
also provide Tabernacle the abili-
ty to place an engine in the new
emergency-services building on
New Road.
After which, almost all of our
residents will be within the five-
mile requirement to a recognized
fire station to receive homeown-
ers insurance reductions of up to
$300, he said.
Welling also said getting the
new, $659,000 pumper would not
increase taxes. In addition to the
pumper, various other equip-
ment, including breathing-air
bottles, a thermal-imaging cam-
era, radios, hand tools, hoses and
foam would also be purchased.
The first year payment in 2013
would be paid from funds in the
future capital outlay account. The
payments in 2014 and beyond
would be paid from retired debt.
The public will be able to vote
on the issue during the fire dis-
trict election on Feb. 18. In addi-
tion to the pumper question, resi-
dents will also vote on commis-
sioners and the departments an-
nual budget.
Curfew
goes
online
By SEAN PATRICK MURPHY
The Tabernacle Sun
A curfew banning minors
from being out between 10 p.m.
and 6 a.m. has been on the
books since 1968. So why did
the township just put it on its
website in December?
Tabernacle Township Ad-
ministrator Doug Cramer said
it was in response to a resi-
dents complaint after an erro-
neous report in another news-
paper that claimed Tabernacle
has no curfew for Mischief
Night.
There was no special cur-
few for Mischief Night, but
theres always been an exis-
tence of the 10 oclock curfew
since 1968, Cramer said.
He said he believes the cur-
few is a good way to help police
stem crime and mischief.
Whether theyre into mis-
chief or something more seri-
ous, thats a tool for them to
use to resolve the issue,
Cramer said.
State police Sgt. Marc Ficht-
ner said there are no signifi-
cant problems with curfew
scofflaws in Tabernacle.
We will enforce it if neces-
sary, he said, noting there has
never been a problem since he
started there in 2008.
Fichtner thinks the ordi-
nance helps parents keep tabs
on where their children are at

Dont leave a tangled mess
for your loved ones to deal
with after youre gone.
Well take care of your Will, Power of
Attorney, Health Care Directive, pet
care concerns, and probate matters.

We make it simple, thorough, and easy to understand!
Welling said the need for anoth-
er pumper in Tabernacle is
greater than in other communi-
ties because there are no hy-
drants in Tabernacle.
In Tabernacle, we must bring
all of our firefighting water with
us, which requires Tabernacle
and other surrounding communi-
ties to have tanker trucks, he
said. In 2008, we demonstrated
our ability to flow over 2,400 gal-
lons of water a minute without
hydrants for two hours.
This was significant, as it led
to our ISO improvement from a
Class 9 to a Class 4.
Additionally, the use of Com-
pressed Air Foam System (CAFS)
triples the efficiency of water.
Therefore, for every one gallon of
water used with CAFS is like hav-
ing three gallons of water with-
out CAFS.
Compressed Air Foam System
has been an invaluable asset on
the ladder truck and to the public
we serve, Welling said. It im-
proves firefighter safety, im-
proves the efficiency of plain
water to extinguish fires by five to
seven times, it provides a faster
means of fire knockdown, it of-
fers a rapid reduction in heat, it
requires less water and it pro-
vides lighter and more manage-
able hose lines.
Most importantly, CAFS re-
duces damage and gets families
back in their homes faster after a
fire. Since Tabernacle has no fire
hydrants, CAFS is a must to ex-
tend our on-board water supply
and provide us with the most effi-
cient firefighting tool available.
The National Fire Protection
Association standard recom-
mends the replacement of first
line pumpers after 15 years of
service. Based on call volume,
Tabernacle typically replaces
pumpers after 20 years of service.
Last year, the Tabernacle Fire
Department responded to 333 in-
cidents. The top three causes of
fires here were careless cooking,
chimneys and carelessly discard-
ed smoking materials.

G
ov. Christie was pretty excited
during his State of the State
Address. Then again, it does-
nt take much to get him excited.
But this time he had reason. The
state indeed has made quite a come-
back. The numbers back up that
claim: job creation, lower taxes, com-
panies moving to the state, etc.
And while the economy remains
Job. No. 1 for Christie and the state,
another of his priorities might well
prove to be the most contentious.
Christie proposed six far-reaching
reforms to the states public education
system: end tenure protection for
weak teachers; remove the least effec-
tive teachers instead of the newest if
layoffs are necessary; attract and re-
tain effective teachers where they are
most needed by paying them more;
ending forced placements; give par-
ents and children in failing schools an
alternative through charter schools;
and establish tax credits to provide
scholarships for low-income children
so that they might be able to attend a
better school.
These are, as the governor noted,
pretty much common sense.
Think of your business, for exam-
ple. Are poor employees protected?
Should you keep the best employees or
those who have been there the longest?
Shouldnt the best employees be paid
more? Should your department head
be forced to take an employee he or
she doesnt want?
And, shouldnt kids have the oppor-
tunity to attend the best schools possi-
ble?
The last several years have been dif-
ficult. As the governor noted, there
was some bitter medicine New Jersey
had to swallow to get better. But it is
getting better.
And hes right when he says the fu-
ture of the state depends on the quali-
ty of education it provides. New Jer-
sey has a history of producing, in
many cases, outstanding students.
These changes will reinforce that his-
tory and expand upon it.
Gov.: the rally caps worked
Christies comeback hasnt reached the finish line yet
Time to tackle education
The governors plans for education
reform likely will be opposed in some
quarters. But, if enacted, they will
build upon the states history of pro-
ducing outstanding students.
The New Jersey Pinelands Commission
welcomed Richard Prickett of Pemberton
Township, as he attended his first meeting
as a commissioner.
Gov. Christie nominated Prickett to fill
one of seven gubernatorial seats on the
commission, and the nomination was re-
cently approved by the state Senate.
I am very proud and humbled to have
been selected to be a Pinelands commis-
sioner, Prickett said. I think it is impor-
tant that future generations of people expe-
rience the natural beauty and history of
the Pinelands the way I have for most of
my life.
The Pinelands is one of the many natu-
ral wonders that make New Jersey a great
place to live. I look forward to serving on
the commission, listening to citizens
points of view and finding ways to solve
the challenges that come before the body in
ways that sustains our way of life in the
Pinelands.
Were very appreciative of the gover-
nors appointment of Richard Prickett,
Nancy Wittenberg, the commissions exec-
utive director, said. Mr. Prickett will pro-
vide the commission with a wealth of
knowledge about the Pinelands, and were
pleased to have him on board as we contin-
ue to carry out our mission to protect the
regions unique resources.
Prickett has been a member of the Pem-
berton Township Council since 2002. He
served as council president in 2002 and
2006 and was a member of the townships
planning board from 2003 to 2005.
Prickett retired in 2006 after teaching
high school science in the Lakewood
School District in Ocean County for 26
years. There, he taught Advanced Place-
ment biology, environmental science, phys-
ical science and chemistry.
Prickett was named the Lakewood
Township Teacher of the Year in 2004, and
he was recognized by the Pinelands Preser-
vation Alliance as an outstanding
Pinelands educator in 2005.
Since 2003, Prickett has served as a
trustee on the Whitesbog Preservation
Trust and he is currently president of the
trusts board.
Prickett holds a bachelors degree in life
sciences from Rutgers University and an
associates degree in psychology from
Burlington County College.
He fills a seat on the commission that
has been vacant since former Chairwoman
Betty Wilson resigned in October 2008.
