SEEK

SEEK'S MISSION IS TO BUILD A PIPELINE TO CAREERS IN SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING AND MATH (STEM) FOR AFRICAN-AMERICAN AND OTHER UNDERREPRESENTED
MINORITY CHILDREN. SEEK PROVIDES HANDS-ON, TEAM-BASED ENGINEERING EXPERIENCES, AND AFRICAN-AMERICAN ENGINEERING MENTORS AND ROLE MODELS, FOR CHILDREN AS EARLYAS THE THIRD GRADE, TO REINFORCE THEIR APTITUDE IN SCIENCE AND MATH AND KEEP THEM IN THE STEM PIPELINETHROUGH GRADE 12.

THE SEEK PROGRAM IS FACILITATED BY MENTORS WHO ARE NSBE COLLEGIATE MEMBERS: BLACK ENGINEERING STUDENTS DEDICATED TO PURSUING ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL EXCELLENCE AND COMMUNITY SERVICE. FOR MANY MENTORS, WHO REPRESENTALL SIX NSBE REGIONS AND CANADA, SEEK HAS BEEN THEIR FIRSTEXPERIENCE TEACHING ENGINEERING CONCEPTS AND HAS SPARKED AN INTEREST AND DESIRE IN MANY TO CONTINUE TO TEACH ENGINEERING IN THEIR COMMUNITIES AND BECOME FURTHER ENGAGED WITH NSBEJR. CHAPTERS.

CUDDICULUH..
SEEK'S PRIMARY CURRICULUM HAS BEEN PROVIDED BY SAE INTERNATIONAL (THE SOCIETY OF AUTOMOTIVE ENGINEERS). IN 2010, NSBE BEGAN A PILOT PROGRAM WITH AN ADDITIONAL CURRICULUM FROM THE NATIONAL SCIENCE CENTER'S FAST TRACK. NSBE ALSO AGREED TO A PARTNERSHIP WITH NATIONAL LAB DAY THAT EXPOSED CAMP PARTICIPANTS TO THE NATIONAL WATER INITIATIVE, WHICH TESTS WATER IN COMMUNITIES ACROSS THE COUNTRY. I: iii I I I

THE SEEK CAMP IS UNIQUE IN SEVERAL WAYS: + SEEK IS THE NATION'S LARGEST SUMMER ENGINEERING PROGRAM AIMED AT AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDENTS + SEEK HAS MORE AFRICAN-AMERICAN MENTORS PERCAMP THAN ANY OTHER SUMMER ENGINEERING PROGRAM IN THE COUNTRY + SEEK HAS A 1:6 MENTOR TO STUDENT RATIO + PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT IS KEY + SEEK IS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH LOCAL SCHOOL SYSTEMS + SEEK REACHES STUDENTS AT A CRITICAL TIME IN THEIR DEVELOPMENT

"THEY LEARNED A LOT. I CAN'T TELL YOU HOW EXCITING IT WAS TO HAVE MY CHILDREN COME HOME EVERY DA Y AND TELLME SOMETHING NEW AND TELLME SOMETHING THAT THEY DID THAT WAS EXCITING. EVEN IF I HAD TO PAY IT, I WOULD STILL HAVE THEM GO TO THE PROGRAM BECAUSE IT WAS JUST THAT EXCITING; AND TO BE ABLE TO NETWORK, THAT'S HUGE FOR ME."

(SIX MULTIPLE-CHOICE AND 10 VOCABULARY MATCHING QUESTIONS BASED ON THE SEEK PROGRAM CURRICULUM) TO SERVEAS AN INDICATOR OF THE ACADEMIC IMPACT OF THE PROGRAM THE RESEARCH WILL ALLOW NSBE TO CREATE A VALUABLE ACADEMIC PROFILE OF SEEK CAMPERS' STEM ABILITIES AND INTEREST IN ENGINEERING, AS WELL AS GAUGE ANY IMPACT ON THEIR ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE.

"SEEK IS THE QUINTESSENTIAL EXAMPLE OF OUR LIVING THE MISSION STATEMENT. ALL THE TRENDS INDICATE A DECREASE IN THE NUMBER OF AFRICAN AMERICANS GOING INTO ENGINEERING, SO IF YOU'RE WORKING TO FILL THE PIPELINE YOU ARE CLEARLY LIVING THE MISSION STATEMENT. WHEN NSBE MEMBERS GIVE UP THEIR SUMMER TO TEACH AFRICAN·AMERICAN CHILDREN, THAT IS MORE THAN A JOB. THAT IS SOCIALLY RESPONSIBLE .... "

AT THE SEEK CAMP FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS HELD AT FRIENDSHIP PUBLIC CHARTER SCHOOL IN WASHINGTON, D.C., SAE'S CURRICULUM INCLUDED THE DESIGN OF MOTORIZED TOY CARS AND OTHER ELECTRIC GEAR-DRIVEN TOYS THAT MET A RANGE OF PERFORMANCE CRITERIA, INCLUDING SPEED,TRAVELDISTANCE AND MANNER OF STOPPING. FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS IN COLUMBUS, OHIO, SAE ADDED A GLIDER CHALLENGE TO ITS CURRICULUM TO FURTHERCHALLENGE STUDENTS' STEM ABILITIES. THE UNDERSTANDING OF FORCE AND FRICTION, LEVERSAND GEARS, TORQUE AND DESIGN WERE PARTOF THE FUN AND EXCITEMENT FOR CAMPERS AND MENTORS ALIKE. SEEK CULMINATED IN A PERFORMANCE CHALLENGE THAT AWARDED EACH STUDENT A MEDAL FOR HIS OR HER PARTICIPATION IN THE PROGRAM. WITH GREAT ENTHUSIASM, SEEK CAMPERS INCREASED THEIR BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF ENGINEERING CAREERS, GAINED VALUABLE HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE WITH ENGINEERING CONCEPTS AND ACCESS TO MENTORS WHO REINFORCED POSITIVE IMAGES OF ENGINEERING AND SCIENCE, AND SHARPENED THEIR MATH AND SCIENCE SKILLS THROUGH A FUN ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE.
