Douglas County Readers Recognize Local Favorites
The results are in. The ballots are counted. From FAVORITE ASIAN RESTAURANT to FAVORITE SENIOR LIVING CENTER and everything in between, readers of The NewsReview have told us who they believe are the crème de la crème in their specific category. Their choices are contained in this unique advertising section – the Reader’s Choice Awards. Last fall, we published an eight page ballot. The print version was distributed to readers who receive The News-Review at their home. An online version was also available at www.nrtoday.com. We asked readers to choose “a favorite” from multiple businesses in specific categories. There was also a place where they could “write in” their favorite. Readers made their choices in over 70 categories and we are pleased to bring you the results. Ten readers won a $50 gift certificate to enjoy a shopping spree at one of Douglas County’s favorite retailers – Fred Meyer. This section represents the opinions of the readers who responded to the ballot. If your favorites did not win this year, be sure to vote in the 2012 Reader’s Choice.

Thank you for voting for your favorites on the 2011 Reader’s Choice Ballot.
We asked our readers to make their choice in over 70 categories. If their favorite wasn’t listed, we asked them to write it in. This voting process was time consuming and we appreciate the fact that you made time to let us know who your favorites are. The reward to our readers for completing the ballot was a chance to win a $50.00 gift certificate to Fred Meyer, a Reader’s Choice Favorite.

Congratulations to our readers who are this year’s winners

Thank you for voting Mercy Foundation’s Festival of Trees as one of your favorite fundraisers in Douglas County. Without the generous support of our Brilliant Star sponsor; Umpqua Bank, and Seven Feathers Casino Resort, our local wineries, and so many others (tree sponsors, designers, event sponsors, volunteers, and the 6,000 community members like you who participated in the events) this fundraiser would not be possible. This year, through your support, the Festival of Trees was a huge success. All proceeds go toward helping Douglas County children and the agencies that serve them. It does take a village to raise a child.

Still Your #1 T ourist Attraction
Story and Photos By Darlene Alexander/Wildlife Safari

Wildlife Safari

ildlife Safari is proud to have been selected for the 11th time in a row as the public’s #1 tourist attraction in Douglas County - what an honor this is! It is YOUR community involvement and support that helps to bring new life and exhibits into the park. Now, as Wildlife Safari celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2012, we look forward to building on those factors that keep the park thriving so that every visitor who walks through our gates can experience a memorable and thrilling adventure. he Wildlife Safari has been working hard to debut it’s brand new exhibit in the village: The Wells Fargo Australian Walkabout exhibit in the lower Village! Grand Opening is slated for spring break. Come out and meet the new animals! In the drive-through, the hippo exhibit has been renovated - now you can really see the hippo! And the best part is that a new hippo will be arriving this spring, so Blippo will have a companion! All these changes have been possible due to the generous support of individuals and organizations within our com-

munity. And let’s not forget our own hard-working staff, docents and volunteers. It is the united and mutual effort of everyone from outside and inside the park that keeps us thriving, that makes it possible for us to provide a unique environment for people from all over the world to enjoy, learn about and experience native and exotic wildlife. ecause of the support of the community, the park is able to extend educational and creative opportunities beyond our daily visitors. For example, in recent years Wildlife Safari has actively built upon existing connections in providing a venue and individual programs for autistic and critically ill children and adults. Working with organizations such as Camp Millennium, Make-AWish Foundation and Dream Connection, Wildlife Safari has been able to reach out beyond the boundaries of the park. In seeking to offer a moment of reprieve for these children, the staff and volunteers at the park have been touched by these individuals in ways that they will never forget. nother milestone that could not have been ac-

complished without community support is Wildlife Safari’s accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). This signifies that Wildlife Safari has established and maintains professional zoological management standards as judged by other professional members of the Association. Of the thousands of zoos across the United States, we are proud to join the 223 zoological facilities passing the AZA’s stringent inspections. AZA accreditation means that when you come to Wildlife Safari, not only can you be assured of a first-class experience, but you are guaranteed that our animals are provided with the best in environmental and husbandry care. ildlife Safari would like to thank every single individual – from the visible supporter to the youngsters

The new Wells Fargo Australian Walkabout Exhibit is coming soon! Willie the wallaroo can’t wait to move in; meanwhile, he sits with his favorite animal, a giant stuffed frog.

in our County – to the staff, docents and volunteers of the park – for making and keeping Wildlife Safari the #1 tourist attraction in Douglas County. Come and visit us – we promise a Safari you will never forget!

American alligator, Fred, and his exhibit were donated by a private individual. Fred is a Village favorite, especially with boys!

Sherm’s Thunderbird Market donated a semitruck load of food for the fifth year to Umpqua Community Action Network. Pictured here are Roseburg Store Manager Steve Rolston and Owners Steve Olsrud and Sherm Olsrud

Discount Market Independently Owned and Operated

Sherm & Wanda Olsrud have been in the grocery business for about 50 years, first in Eugene and then in Medford, Klamath Falls and Roseburg. The first store the Olsruds bought was a meat market in Eugene in 1956, which they operated until 1961. Sherm & Wanda then bought a 24-hour market in Eugene, selling it in 1967 to move to Medford. When Sherm & Wanda came to Medford in 1967, they bought the Thunderbird Market on Jacksonville Highway. In 1974, they purchased a store at the Shasta Plaza Mall in Klamath Falls. Other stores in Medford and Roseburg came in following years. The Olsrud’s grocery business has been active in supporting many local activities including 4-H, FFA and many others. They attend Jackson County,

Klamath County, Tulelake/ Butte Valley, Josephine County, Siskiyou Jr. Livestock and Douglas County auctions. For the past five years they have donated a semitruck load of food to the Umpqua Community Action Network. Sherm, Wanda and their son Steve Olsrud remain deeply committed to Medford, Klamath Falls, Roseburg and the surrounding community. Sherm, Wanda and Steve say their stores strive to give the customers what they want in a friendly manner at a good price. Sherm says, “If you shop with us you will save money”. Steve is quick to follow with “Buying right means we can sell it right”. The Olsruds wish to thank the good folks who continue to shop and work at Sherm’s Thunderbird Markets and Food 4 Less.

Favorite Insurance Company
ATRIO Health Plans is a local insurance company that offers Medicare advantage plans to area seniors and other individuals eligible for Medicare benefits. ATRIO plans include complete Medicare coverage but also offer additional benefits and cover more healthcare costs. The federal government contracts with private insurance companies like ATRIO to offer these plans. ATRIO was established in 2004 by DCIPA, the Physicians of Douglas County (DCIPA) in Douglas County and Cascade Comprehensive Care (CCC) in Klamath County to offer local options for comprehensive, flexible and fairly priced Medicare advantage plans. Being local offers several advantages, including more personalized customer service and oversight by the same physicians who are caring for area Medicare beneficiaries. ATRIO’s health plans range from basic entry-level packages designed for those wanting protection but not anticipating significant need for medical care to comprehensive plans that provide maximum coverage. ATRIO offers Medicare plans that include Part D (Prescription Drug) coverage. In addition to the original physician owners of DCIPA and CCC, Marion Polk Community Health Plan (MPCHPA), the insurance company established by the Salem-area physician association, became an ATRIO shareholder in 2011. The addition of the MPCHPA members doubled ATRIO’s total membership and rapidly grew ATRIO requiring the addition of employees in each community served. The company’s growth, says CEO Ruth Rogers Bauman, will enable ATRIO to “capitalize on the strengths of our combined staffs to continue to offer quality services and affordable premiums to our members in addition to an exemplary level of service that Medicare has recognized with its highest 5-Star designation.” While advantage plan annual enrollment begins in October, individuals who have recently become eligible for Medicare or who are new residents of the area and are looking for a new advantage plan can enroll at any time. Enrollment can be done through local insurance agents or by calling ATRIO at 877-672-8620.

Committed to Our Members’ Complete Satisfaction
ATRIO Health Plans’ recognition as one of Douglas County’s “Favorite Insurance Companies” is just another sign of our mission to ensure our members’ complete satisfaction. The Reader’s Choice Award is a true honor that reflects a commitment to serving our members so deep that Medicare has awarded us its highest 5-Star rating for customer service! Thank you readers for the honor of this award, and thank you ATRIO members for the honor of entrusting us with your insurance needs.

Here is how Medicare ranks ATRIO on a 5-star scale: 5-Star Rated for Customer Service Excellence* 4-Star Rated for Care of Older Adults** 5-Star Rated for Member Experience With Drug Plan** 5-Star Rated for Member Satisfaction**
Plan performance summary star ratings are assessed each year and may change from one year to the next. * 2011 ** 2012

Bought the Roseburg NAPA store 14 years ago and the Sutherlin NAPA 11 years ago. Their goal was to build an ethical business with deep local ties and to give back to the community. It is truly a family owned business as their three daughters; Haley, Tessa and Lexa have grown up at NAPA. They started filing and counting inventory at an early age and now Tessa and Haley are part-time delivery drivers. The family really strives to give back to Douglas County. NAPA has a real presence at the Douglas County Race Track and at Gaddis Park fields for Cal Ripken. Sue and Rhandy have both coached and sponsored local sports teams throughout the years. Sue is very active in many local organizations including LeTip International, Noon Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce, and for the past 2 years she has been “Mama Duck” for the Rotary Duck Race for Children. , Tessa & Lexa The Roseburg and Sutherlin NAPA stores have the largest inughters; Haley ith their three da burg, Owners w ventory of parts in Douglas County. They have recently Van Volken Sue and Rhandy increased their inventory of Heavy Duty and Import parts. Locally, NAPA has seven AutoCare repair shops. When you are getting your car repaired, wouldn’t you want “Peace of Mind Warranty” ? That is what our seven local NAPA AutoCares provide. There are over 14,000 NAPA AutoCares nationwide that will take care of your repair needs wherever your travels take you.
