It is mid-Winter! We hope all is well! By the time you read this , our 2012 Island Guides should be on the island and making their way toward their temporary housing in the back room of the Chamber office in Klawock. You are invited to stop by and pick up a box or two to distribute! We start with a stack of nearly 20,000. Our part time Office Manager has been very busy and very productive with her time this past month. Please visit our website and check out what is new and improved! First on your To Do list is to browse the Business Directory and make sure all is correct in your own business listings. These have been audited and updated, but a second pair of eyes is always a plus! The 2012 Island Guide will be added to its dedicated web page as soon as the paper edition is in the office. Rebecca has added photos to the Photo Gallery and she is dressing up the Community pages with photos that have been sent in. If you have a photo of your community that you are willing to share, please do email it to the office. Rebecca will change these out occasionally or feature a collection on the pages. The Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors will meet for its FEBRUARY meeting on Wednesday, FEBRUARY 15th at noon at the AP&T Conference Room in Craig. The budget approval is on the agenda, along with the 2012 Program of Work.

The fourth planning meeting for the 2012 SOUTHEAST CONFERENCE was held at the Craig City Council Chambers on Monday, January 16th. In attendance were: Jon Bolling, Victoria Merritt, Jim McFarland, Wayne Benning, Ken Owen, Leslie Isaacs and Jan Bush. Heather Hedges participated by phone. Confirmed venues for the 2012 SE Conference are: The Craig High School gymnasium— large group presentations to be held on September 25th and 26th, 2012. Island Air Hangar at Klawock Airport—Community Reception on evening of September 25th. Performance of Native Dance group confirmed. The Craig Tribal Association facility—Annual Scholarship banquet and auction on the 26th and the SE Conference Meeting on the 27th. Fireweed Lodge—Chamber of Chambers Breakfast on September 26th. Directors and office managers from other SE Chambers will be invited to attend this event in order to provide a networking opportunity. The POW Inventory of Accommodations and Vehicle Rentals was reviewed. Attempts will be made to add some of the missing accommodations, and then the list will be sent to SE Conference to be made available on their website. Jon Bolling will ask one of the Craig City Staff members to act as a contact and clearinghouse for this list. Those who are on this list are asked to contact the City of Craig and let them know when their rooms have been rented so that this list can be kept current. Businesses who perform food preparation in the course of their own businesses will be contacted for their interest in catering the various meals and snacks provided during the three day event. A list of events and excursions available on Prince of Wales during this event will be compiled. It was suggested that one of the Forest Service Recreation team members might do this. The committee received a detailed spreadsheet with tasks and a timeline to follow in planning for the Conference.

1—RAVEN AND SHOE LOGO OFFICIALLY ADOPTED The Raven and Shoe logo was officially adopted by the Marathon Committee as the logo/mascot for the POW Island Marathon! The Committee has registered the logo with the US Patent office. It has been copyrighted and the Trademark will be officially registered once it passes through the official review process. This legal action protects the logo for the POW Runners and Walkers Club and it cannot be used without the permission of the organization. 2—Early Registrants on the Marathon Website Each new registrant raises the enthusiasm of the Marathon Planning committee and helps focus on the task list! As of the end of January, there were 4 female Half Marathon registrants and 12 Full Marathoners. Of the Full Marathon Runners, one is from Colorado, one from Alabama, one from Utah, a family of four from Kansas/Missouri!! Of the 12, four are women, eight are men. The youngest registered participant is 22. The oldest is 63. 3—Volunteers take on the 2012 Task List Tony Gannon is monitoring and keeping the committee informed of the new registrants at each meeting. New committee member Doug Wescott is going to tackle the job of recording the finish line results and producing the official result for the awards. Kim Scheidecker of Craig has taken on the task of organizing a Youth Station to Station relay team from Craig. A volunteer from other POW Communities is sought for organizing similar teams. The committee has set a maximum of five such teams to participate in this year’s event. The committee is working on finding special contents for the Goody Bags for these team members. IFA COMINGS AND GOINGS: JANUARY 2011 VS 2010 VS 2009
The IFA carried 1820 passengers and 335 vehicles off the island during the DECEMBER morning runs to Ketchikan. The 2010 figures were 2363 and 463. 2009 totals were 2355 and 426. During the evening return runs, 1913 passengers and 332 vehicles arrived on POW through the Hollis port. 2010 figures were 2103 and 399. 2009 totals were 2177 and 403. THE DECEMBER SAILINGS TOOK PLACE ON 29 DAYS, WITH A NO SAIL DAY BECAUSE OF WEATHER ON 12/22 AND ON CHRISTMAS DAY. During the month of DECEMBER, the car deck was full on ONLY ONE RUN, with 2 runs at 80% to 95%. The average percentage of deck used during DECEMBER was 46 in the morning and 45% in the evenings, down from previous months. The Chamber thanks Carolyn Chapman of the IFA for providing the monthly stats.

The full V&T Advisory Committee is set to meet next on February 6, 2012 at 6:00 p.m. at the Craig High School Library. The committee scoring proposals received in response to the project coordinator position will also meet on February 6, at 3:00 p.m. to score the proposals. If the full Advisory Committee approves the selection of a contractor at their meeting the evening of February 6, the Klawock City Council will then consider the award at its February 7 meeting.

The Forest Service is planning to do many projects in 2012. First Tory wanted us to know that Maeve Taylor had her baby on the 9th of January and his name is Finnegan Taylor Harris. Mother and Baby are doing fine and they will be back on the Island in a Month. Sunnahae Trail work is the biggest project they will do this year. The goal is to make it to the road this year. They would like to organize a community volunteers project to help with this big project. Plans are to harden one of the portages on the Honker Divide Trail with gravel. It would be difficult to do more than one portage this year because of the distance the gravel will have to be hauled. Three sided shelters will be going in at Winter Harbor and Memorial Beach. The Thorne by School kids will be doing the work. The Recycling projects for some facilities working with Craig Tribal Association will be implemented this year. A preservation project on the Salmon Bay Lake Cabin in the Karta Wilderness Area will start this year. The cabin was built in 1939 by Bob Ellis the founder of Alaska Airlines and they want to preserve it rather than replacing it. They are having a historical reconstruction firm give them a preservation plan on the project. This will be a “Passport in Time Project” in 2013 for volunteers. In September some of the preservation work will be started. A Three sided shelter will be built on Harris River trail from Hollis to the Harris River Interpretive Trail. Tory told Fred they might be able to help fix the bridge on Kasaan Trail to the Whale House. They would like to build a Young Growth Cabin on the beach at Sal Creek. They are looking for comment from Thorne Bay residents as the site is 3miles north of Sandy Beach. There are also some possible significant archeological sites here so they have talked to tribes on the Island and in Wrangell about it. The tribes agreed that the location was ok. The Forest Service is going to bring a specialist in to do a dig before they make a final decision on the cabin location. Comment: Jim McFarland stated that most of these were projects funded with federal funds selected by the Resources Advisory Council, the RAC. This body met for over a year to advise the Forest Service where stimulus funds were needed for projects on Prince of Wales Island.

The 42 passenger Tour Catamaran, The Alaskan Dream, will be stopping in Thorne Bay and Kasaan twice a week as part of their scheduled cruise of the inside passage from Sitka to Ketchikan and then Ketchikan to Sitka. Each run will have different passengers. Total capacity of the ship is 44 guests. Complete information on their schedules is available from www.alaskandreamcruises.com. They are looking for activities to do for the 4 hours they will be in Thorne Bay while the boat refuels and re-provisions. The City will be setting up a place for artists to sell their wares and it is hoped there will be people to take the passengers on a walking tour of the community or walk on the trails close by. They would like to offer half day Charters for those guests that want to go fishing. It has been suggested some may want to explore the history of Thorne Bay by seeing the photos that are available in the Library as well as seeing some of the remnants of the logging industry here. Any of the activities that would take people out of town on to the National Forest will need the proper permits. Katie Rook is with us today and will talk about how she can help with that process. This is an Island Wide event and everyone is welcome to offer services or goods. . Kim Oliver with the Cruise West Company would like to talk with anyone wanting to provide services or items for sale. They need to be sure what their clients are offered is a quality product and authentic. She can be contacted at 907-7478100 or email@example.com. The people on the ship are very well educated and do lots of research on the places they are going. They may know more than we do about where we live! They book a year in advance so have time to get familiar with the places they are going. When they stop they may have something they want to do or see. We hope the tour operators will be able to give us an idea of what their clients will want before they get here. This could be an economic boost to Thorne Bay and Kasaan as well as all of Prince of Wales Island and we are expecting people to respond.

Kathy Peavey is the main organizer of the Whale Fest Weekend, in conjunction with her grant for the International Coastal Clean up Program. It will be held March 30th to April 1st. March 30 all events are at the Craig High school commons or auditorium. From 4-7 pm a Beachcomber fun fair and booths will be held. This is where beachcombers showcase their favorite finds and agencies can display marine debris information ie., Marine Conservation Alliance Foundation. No sale tables at this time. Last year, we added a few in the last week to fill up the room. We may do this again. We will have a silent auction to raise funds and sell raffle tickets for speaking fees, airfare and accommodations. Raffle items are a 4 ft x14 inch Orca mosaic coat rack that goes on a wall, orca stained glass and Chart lamp with orca painted on it with tripod base. Saturday the 31st there will be a Whale watching tour on Kathy Peaveys fishing boat or you can take your own boat or kayak. It will be a good day with lots of great things to see. You will need to register with Kathy for inclusion on the fishing boat. That evening there will be Commercial booths at the Craig High School and an Orca Net work presentation that evening. Sunday April 1st will be the Beach clean up day. Kathy will be able to take 25 people on her boat and you should sign up with her. Bob Claus said he thought there could be 300 people in attendance this year, with many from off the Island. I have decided that I would like to send out a monthly "Office newsletter" to all, just to give you some idea on what I have been working in my "first" month here at the Chamber. I think it is important for you as Chamber Members to know what it is I am accomplishing! First let me say that I take great pride in my work for the Chamber and cannot tell you how much I enjoy what I do here! Learning who our members are and getting to know each and everyone of their businesses is very exciting! This month I have sent out maps to Mississippi, New Mexico, Nevada and Montana. We have two new members; Sunrise Aviation Inc from Wrangell, and Pacific Wing, LLC in Petersburg. Both are small companies with 0-5 employees, and advertise for sightseeing, hunting and fishing drop offs and cargo delivery for all of Southeast Alaska. Sunrise Aviation, Inc advertises that they fly to Canada also! Besides checking and answering emails, opening mail, keeping the office neat and clean, I have finished editing the "business directory" on the website! Boy am I glad that task is done!! Our members will be happy to know that now all their web-links work! Each and everyone of them has been tested out! Some of the changes to the website you will notice are: on the home page you will see a date that the site was updated..........whenever I do something to update, a new date will go here! I have added some dates to the calendar, and if you don't already know.....if you want all the information (since the space on the calendar is limited) just click on that item and it will be displayed! I learned (self taught) how to add a page to the business directory, you will see USFS Ranger Districts has been added!! With the help of Jeannie McFarland, I have critiqued the "become a member" page, trying to make the language more understandable! And many many more photos or other small changes! My next tasks will be to upload more photos to the website and to upload the 2012 Island Guide! I would like to get some more of our 2012 photo submissions uploaded to the website photo gallery and change things up a bit! I will be writing an office procedure manual so someone behind me can step in and fly with little or no direction. I have caught on and am learning our office, but I have to admit it has been a struggle! With Jan Bush's urging this will be a work in progress! As I learn it will get written! We have a new flat screen TV here in the office and I will also be working to get this up and running, with pictures! Look for it soon in our window! Anyone with dates or photos please forward them to me as I will be constantly updating the web with new submissions that I receive:
