urray’s Chicken, a New York-based poultry company, provides a good life for its birds. The chickens are raised in Pennsylvania’s Amish countryside with plenty of room to roam and grow. They benefit from spacious housing, clean air, fresh water, no antibiotics and a generally stress-free lifestyle. These comfy conditions are responsible for Murray’s Chicken being the first poultry company in America to receive the humane-raised and handled certification from Humane Farm Animal Care (HFAC).

The “Certified Humane Raised and Handled” label assures consumers that a meat, poultry, egg or dairy product has been produced according to HFAC’s precise standards for humane farm animal treatment. Animals must receive a nutritious diet without antibiotics or hormones and must be raised with shelter, resting areas and space sufficient to support natural behavior. Sixteen companies are now certified to use the label. “This is the essence of our business,” COO Dean Koplik says. “We specialize in traditional, ready-to-cook chicken products. Our best-selling items are whole birds and boneless breast. The ultimate appeal our products have on consumers is the taste. We process a special, proprietary breed, give them an all-vegetarian feed and raise them well to produce a superior taste.” Koplik also notes Murray’s Chicken won the Gold Taste Award from the American Taste Institute in 1998, and its boneless breast is certified lean by the American Heart Association. “These distinctions set us apart from others in the market,” he says.
