I Don't Want To Be a "Die-hard APO" Member
by Jessie Mangoba

Sounds like mutiny coming from an eleven-year member of the renowned ALPHA PHI OMEGA Fraternity. The reason why I have entitled my "piece" this way is to catch your attention, and maybe start to make a change in our beloved fraternity. First, I would like to introduce myself. I am Brother Jessie Bayani Carasig Mangoba, born on December 2, 1980. I am turning thirty-one on my next birthday, and I have been a proud APO member for eleven years now. I still consider myself a young member of our organization compared to our seniors who have been members of APO for twenty, thirty, forty, and even fifty years for those who are blessed enough to enjoy long life. During my college years I have served as the GrandChancellor for my chapter, Omicron, which is based at the University of the Philippines Diliman Extension Program in Clarkfield Pampanga. I try to be an active member of APO, though not religiously, because of some limitations (time, financial, caused by work, personal reasons) which most of us members experience. Up to now I am also trying my best to live the principles and ideals that was inculcated in me when I was still pledging my membership to our organization. I also try to attend and participate in services, alumni and chapter gatherings, and even meetings. I enjoy the feeling of being warmly welcomed by our brothers and sisters, as if they've known you for a long time, even though it has only been your first time to meet and shake their hands. So, if I believe in the principles and ideals of APO and still practice them, why did I entitle this article as "l don't want to be a die-hard APO?". Simply because, my brothers and sisters, our principles and ideals are almost close to perfect, but the traditions and traits that we have inherited from older or past members are not. When you describe a fellow member as a die-hard APO, it means that this member is a devoted APO. That is good in the context of membership. But the sad fact is, majority of that description is negative in meaning. It may mean that that brod or sis is willing to die for APO and for its members come hell or high water, or he is willing to fight and get hurt just to defend the name of the APO, and worst of all, he is willing to kill for the sake of APO. We may not agree on this subject my brothers and sisters, but as far as I can recall, APO promotes leadership, friendship, and service to mankind. I did not remember joining APO to die for it or for its members. I also did not join APO to hurt pledging members and rival fraternities. I joined APO to exercise and improve my leadership skills, promote friendship, and to provide service to other people, regardless of their race, financial status, affinity or organization(meaning we are also bound to serve even the members of other rival fraternities if they are in need). I don't want to be a die-hard APO member because I don't want to die for APO. We are a service-oriented, God-fearing organization. We value life. My heart breaks whenever I hear of brothers being killed simply because rival fraternities found out that they are members of APO. It is senseless. It must be stopped. We must be the one to initiate change, to start promoting kindness and love for others instead of promoting disgust and hate to rival fraternities and worst of all, to pass on that tradition to future members. I just want to be a regular member, who upholds the principles and ideals of APO. We must exercise leadership. In order for us to do that we must promote friendship, and provide service to those in need, regardless if they are members of other fraternities. We must stop being haters, and be lovers of men. I believe this is what Frank Reed Horton would want the future members of APO to do. I also believe this is the Christian way. Please repost, share, and circulate this article if you agree with my belief, and if you also want change in our organization's traditions and beliefs. Change can't be done overnight, but change is not impossible. May we always be. "APOng pinaghirapan, APOng pakamamahalinl"

John 13:34-35 New International Version (NIV) "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." Brother Jessie Bayani C. Mansoba Batch 2000-A Omicron Chapter ID number 0015-2000-32299

Zeta Xi AA teams up with civic org in medical mission Bro. Pabs Argamosa, Sigma'79
Hundreds of residents from various barangays of Lopez, Quezon availed of the free medical and surgical mission held at the town's Magsaysay Memorial District Hospital (MMDH) from January 31 to February 4,2011 The medical mission was an annual civic activity of the Lopez Greater Manila Residents Association (LOGREMARA) in cooperation with MMDH. For this year's mission, LOGREMARA partnered with the Alpha Phi Omega-Zeta Xi Alumni Association (APO-ZEXA) based in Polytechnic University of the Philippines-Lopez, Quezon in recognition of APO-ZEXA's past meritorious service projects in the community. The week-long "Medical Mission 2011" was spearheaded by a 30-man medical team from the Philippine Medical Association of Greater St. Louis, Medical Mission Foundation Inc., Missouri, USA. The medical team who flew all the way from the USA was led by Drs. Tony Penilla, Greg Pen ilia, Manny Castasus, Ely Cruz, Larry Mayuga, Rene Enriquez, and. Willie Magat. Meanwhile the MMDH medical staff was headed by Dr. Emma Serdon As the only fraternal partner organization, the APO-Zeta Xi alumni and residents were tasked with the implementation of several activities such as the registration of patients and assistance during the medical procedures. Incidentally the chapter celebrated the 30th Anniversary of the Zeta Xi Sorority last February 1. LOGREMARA is a non-stock, non profit SEC-registered organization composed of professionals and families from Lopez, Quezon who are now permanently residing in Metro Manila and neighboring provinces. The main thrust of the organization is to extend help to the underprivileged people of Lopez in the field of education, health care and community development. The incumbent president of the organization is DOTC Undersecretary Anneli Lontoc. The APO-Zeta Xi Chapter was organized in 1980 by Bro. Pabs Argamosa (Sigma'79). The chapter has been the recipient of numerous national and regional recognitions among them the SLAR Best Chapter Award. Its alumni arm the APO-ZEXA regularly renders various service projects and community civic activities that earned accolades from among its beneficiaries, the school authorities, the local government and the regional and national APO leadership and membership as a whole. APO-ZEXA is currently headed by President Bro. Reymund Pinawin. The chapter's Grand Chancellor and Grand Lady Chancellor are Bro. Tala Bitoin and Sis. Ellen Joson, respectively.
