Executive Summary
South Africa has a youth (one third of the population) unemployment rate of 51% (SAIRR, 6 April 2011). An illustration of the absence of _ or severely limited, culture of entrepreneurship amongst our youth. The Education With Enterprise Trust (EWET) focuses upon secondary school learners to address this challenge through Entrepreneurship Education (EE). To change the South African youth’s competence from being job seekers to be creators of jobs. The approach being followed integrates: (i) promotion of entrepreneurship through “Youth Enterprise Society (YES) Simama Ranta” and “EE Simama Ranta” - “the youth strengthening the South African economy through their entrepreneurship;” (ii) EE syllabi; (iii) suitable teaching approach; (iv) teacher development; (v) Youth Enterprise Society (YES) clubs as experiential learning laboratories in entrepreneurship; (vi) local community ownership and support; (vii) monitoring and evaluation; (viii) youth business leadership from YES clubs; (ix) collaboration with the Department of Basic Education; (x) exploration of career options for entrepreneurs and; (xi) outreach from amongst the youth as well as a broad based collaborative network of expertise within the field that also involves YES Alumni. EWET needs support to respond to scale on par with the scale of the challenge.
