kingdom of God  diagram depicts kingdom of God held in tension by three elements
 allegiance  truth  power

not separate : must be held in tension, or risk perverting Good News, misrepresenting the Kingdom of God, e.g. Paul writes,
 Kingdom of God is not a matter of words but of power — 1 Corinthians 2.4

Paul not denigrating importance of sound doctrine , teaching (as shall see), rather reminding Corinthians that God‘s words have God‘s power behind them, backing them up – in other words, he was holding allegiance, truth, power in proper tension… counter example, where elements not held in tension
 ―seven sons of Sceva‖ trying to cast out demons…
— Acts 19.13-17

remember, hold fast to this rule : keep yourself from errors note allegiance, truth and power are experienced as encounters, meetings, with an aspect of divine reality, aspects of God‘s glory, character… though often become suddenly aware of them, each aspect of kingdom reality is met over time, producing gradual transformation…

love God wholeheartedly

 first three Commandments concern allegiance to God
I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt  you are to have no other gods before me…  you are not to use lightly the name of the Lord your God…  remember the Sabbath, to set it apart for God

— Exodus 20

 Jesus taught greatest command:
―love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength‖ — Matthew 22.36-38

 Jesus linked obedience to his commands with remaining in his love
―if you keep my commands, you will stay in my love‖

— John 15.9-11

 love, loyalty, allegiance leads to covenant faithfulness, ―righteousness‖

anointing, power, faithfulness

 not everyone who says to me, ‗Lord, Lord!‘ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven, only those who do what my Father in heaven wants;  on that Day, many will say to me, ‗Lord, Lord! didn‘t we prophesy in your name? didn‘t we expel demons in your name? didn‘t we perform many miracles in your name?  then I will tell them to their faces, ‗I never knew you! get away from me, you workers of lawlessness‘ — Matthew 7.21-23

the people in this very challenging teaching of Jesus were apparently working miracles in his name – they appear to be acting as Christians – and very charismatic Christians too!
yet on the day of judgement, when all the secrets of men‘s hearts are exposed, Jesus declares: I never knew you and sends them away as workers of lawlessness!

narrow road leading to life

… context : Jesus is a warning about false prophets…
 beware of false prophets! they come to you wearing sheep‘s clothing but underneath they are hungry wolves! You will recognise them by their fruit…every healthy tree produces good fruit, but a poor tree produces bad fruit…

… then he declares:
 not everyone who says to me, Lord, Lord! will enter the kingdom of heaven…

… then concludes:
 so everyone who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be a sensible man who build his house on bedrock… — Matthew 7.15-27  not everyone who says, ‗Lord, Lord!‘ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven, only those who do what my Father in heaven wants — Matthew 7.21

… unlike us: working miracles, prophesying in his name is not what impresses Jesus – perhaps because such things are done according to gifts of Holy Spirit (some are very gifted, others less so, but why should something that is a gift from Jesus impress him? It doesn’t!) … what impresses him is doing what the Father wants: being obedient to him, submitting to his Spirit, bearing fruit of Spirit : love...

fruit of the Spirit

 sexual immorality, impurity, indecency… selfish ambition, factionalism, intrigue and envy… drunkenness, orgies…  I warn you: those who do such things will have no share in the Kingdom of God  but the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy peace, patience, kindness and goodness, faithfulness, humility, self-control  nothing in Torah stands against such things — Galatians 6.19-23

16

2008-2009

'eternal purpose' academy of mission

anointing, power, faithfulness

 Samson, judged Israel; powerfully anointed; abject moral failure
— Judges 13-16;

 possible to have religious position and influence, yet be hypocritical
 ―woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites!  …you have neglected the more important matters of the law – justice, mercy and faithfulness.‖ — Matthew 23.23-24, Romans 2.17-23

they were not ignoring God‘s teaching, rather satisfied to obey ‗convenient‘ teaching, overlooking ‗inconvenient‘ teachings… this is reason their leadership was taken from them, given to apostles

a heart to serve God’s purpose

 one thing required of servant: faithfulness
 you should regard us as the Messiah‘s servants, as trustees of God‘s secret truth; now the one thing that is asked of a trustee is that he be found trustworthy… — 1 Corinthians 4.2

 wise and faithful servant, rewarded and promoted
 excellent! you are a good and trustworthy servant; you have been faithful with a small amount, so I will put you in charge of a large amount; come and join in your master‘s happiness! — Matthew 25.21

deeper intimacy with Messiah

 renounce adultery with the world
 don‘t you know that loving the world is hating God? whoever chooses to be the world‘s friend makes himself God‘s enemy?‖ — James 4.4

 walking with God
 human being, you have already been told what is good, what the Lord demands of you – no more than to act justly, love grace and walk in purity with your God
— Micah 6.8; see also Enoch, Genesis 5.22-24

19

2008-2009

'eternal purpose' academy of mission

deeper intimacy with Messiah

 friendship with God
 you are my friends, if you do what I command you. I no longer call you slaves, because a slave doesn‘t know what his master is about; but I have called you friends — John 15.13-15

 Abraham … was even called God‘s friend

sound teaching

 most powerful weapon of all
 watch your life and doctrine closely; persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers‖ — 1 Timothy 4.16

 sign of faithfulness
 the knowledge of the truth that leads to Godliness
— Titus 1.1

truth brings maturity

 speaking truth in love brings Messianic Community to maturity
 we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming…  instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ — Ephesians 4:14,15

25

2008-2009

'eternal purpose' academy of mission

false doctrine obscures love

 promote love from a clean heart, from a good conscience and from sincere trust  some by aiming amiss, have wandered off into fruitless discussions;  they want to be teachers of Torah, but they understand neither their own words nor the matters about which they make such emphatic pronouncements — 1 Timothy 1.5-7

mission mobilisation through leadership education—academy.eternalpurpose.org.uk

26

2008-2009

'eternal purpose' academy of mission

false doctrine a sin

 sin, link to demonic forces
the Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons — 1 Timothy 4:1-2; Revelation 2.14-16, 20-24

 typically sign of deeper sin, requiring repentance
avoid stupid controversies…about God‘s teaching because they are worthless;
warn a divisive person once, then a second time and after that have nothing to do with them; you may be sure that such a person has been perverted and is sinning

— Titus 3.9-10

note not speaking about minor disagreements, nor about healthy theological discussion, but about heretical teachings which are at odds with community

false doctrine and conceit

 flee from those who indulge
 if anyone teaches differently and does not agree to the sound precepts of our Lord Jesus the Messiah and to the doctrine that is in keeping with godliness, he is swollen with conceit and understands nothing…  instead, he has a morbid desire for controversies and word-battles, out of which come jealousy, dissension, insults, evil suspicions and constant wrangling  among people whose minds no longer function properly and who have been deprived of the truth, so that they imagine that religion is a road to riches…

 you, as a man of God, flee from these things…
— 1 Tim. 6:3-5, 11

mission mobilisation through leadership education—academy.eternalpurpose.org.uk

28

2008-2009

'eternal purpose' academy of mission

false doctrine a sign of times

 a sign of the times
 for the time is coming when people will not have patience for sound teaching, but will cater to their passions and gather around themselves teachers who say what their ears itch to hear  yes, they will stop listening to the truth but will turn aside to follow myths — 2 Timothy 4:3-4,  the Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons — 1 Timothy 4:1-2

mission mobilisation through leadership education—academy.eternalpurpose.org.uk

internal revelation of truth

 spiritual truth is perceived through an internal, spiritual unveiling of objective truth
 I did not receive (the Good News) from someone else nor was I taught it — it came through a direct revelation from Yeshua the Messiah — Galatians 1.12 ―You are the Messiah, the Son of the Living God… no human being revealed this to you, no, it was my Father in heaven‖ — Matthew 16.17  I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better — Ephesians 1.17, also 3.3

mission mobilisation through leadership education—academy.eternalpurpose.org.uk

30

2008-2009

'eternal purpose' academy of mission

spiritual words, spiritual truths
 a manner of speaking taught by the Spirit, by which we explain things of the Spirit to people who have the Spirit…  the natural man does not receive the things from the Spirit of God – to him they are nonsense!  moreover, he is unable to grasp them, because they are evaluated through the Spirit — 1 Corinthians 2.13-14

note spiritual words for spiritual truths is not an excuse for using ‗jargon‘, which excludes those without specialist knowledge ‗jargon‘ is technical language known to any community which has particular expertise; so scientist have a set of jargon, which is peculiarly understood by scientists but not others… when scientists explain views to non-scientists, they must explain technical terms or use plain language instead… so it is with spiritual truths : we must learn to explain them to those who do not have the Spirit with patience, kindness, avoiding using spiritual-sounding jargon which they cannot comprehend instead we should seek to make the experience of Christ real to them in personal terms, which they can relate to…

Holy Spirit reveals truth

 Holy Spirit has been specifically sent to guide us into all truth, to reveal truth to us
 when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, he will guide you into all truth;  for he will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears he will speak;  and He will tell you things to come. — John 16:13  his messianic anointing continues to teach you about all things and is true, not a counterfeit

truth brings conflict…

 sometimes between family members
it is not peace I have come to bring, but a sword! for I have come to set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother…a man‘s enemies will be the members of his own household — Matthew 10.34

 with religious systems / powers, holding to a form of godliness, but resisting the truth

 unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth
