Installing an AX4-5i Storage System in an iSCSI Direct Configuration with a VMware ESX Server 3i Server

Terminology
This document uses the following terms:
host A computer that is or will be connected to a CLARiiON storage system. This computer is called either a management station or a server, depending on how it is or will be connected to the storage system. A host, which is not running the ESX Server operating system, or virtual machine from which you manage CLARiiON storage systems. The host or virtual machine must be on the same network as the storage-system management ports. A host that is running the ESX Server 3.x operating system and is already or will be connected directly to the iSCSI ports on a CLARiiON storage system. A server that is not already connected to or set up for a CLARiiON storage system. The network interface card (NIC) or iSCSI host bus adapter (HBA) that is already installed in a server. Currently, only NICs are supported for connecting a server running ESX Server to the storage system. The NIC or iSCSI HBA that was not already installed in the server. Currently, only NICs are supported for connecting a server running a VMware ESX Server to the storage system. An AX4-5 series system with two storage processors (SPs) an AX4-5i storage system. An AX4-5 series system with two storage processors (SPs) an AX4-5 or AX4-5i storage system with the expansion pack enabler installed. A storage system that is not connected to a server or configured for storage. It is just as it was shipped to you. A storage-system component that you can add to your storage system or replace in your storage system at your site. Examples of FRUs are disks andpower/cooling modules. A disk processor enclosure that contains 1 or 2 storage processors (SPs) and 4 to 12 disks.

DAE-AX

A disk-array enclosure that provides additional storage for a DPE-AX with 2 storage processors and an expansion pack installed. Each DAE-AX supports a maximum of 12 disks. A printed-circuit board with processors, memory modules, and control logic that manages the I/O between the server and the disk modules. A set of disks with the same capacity and RAID type on which you create one or more virtual disks. A grouping of physical disk partitions into one span of disk storage space. Each virtual disk you create is distributed equally across the disks in the disk pool. A virtual disk looks like an individual disk to the servers operating system. A virtual disk is created with Navisphere Express and it has that has not been formatted or configured as a VMFS or raw device mapping volume. A NIC or iSCSI HBA port that issues requests to send data to or receive data from a target in the storage system. A storage-system SP port that accepts and responds to requests from an initiator. Such a port is called an iSCSI data port.

Before you start

Review the support matrix on the Service & Support page of the storage-system support website to confirm that the following are supported: The server hardware that will access the storage system. The operating system version running on the server hardware. Read the release notes for your storage system, which are available on the Service & Support page of the storage-system support website.
The url for the storage-system support website is in the Documentation and Support document that shipped with your storage system.

For a new storage-system installation, you will need to: If you ordered a rackmount cabinet for your storage system To review the Site Preparation Guide for the 40U-C Cabinet, which shipped with the cabinet, to ensure that the site in which you want to install the storage system meets the site requirements. This guide is available on in the Technical Documentation and Advisories section on the Powerlink website. Especially important is confirming that your facility has appropriate electrical wiring in place to accommodate your cabinets power cables. To support all of the storage systems high-availability features, the cabinet must receive power from two discrete circuits. To verify that your facility has: Electrical wiring in place to accommodate your installations power cables. To support all the storage systems high-availability features, you must receive power from at least two separate circuits. Adequate network wiring to provide each storage-system storage processor (SP) management port with a discrete Ethernet connection and IP address. The storage-system management ports can connect to either a 10/100/1000 or 1-gigabit Ethernet LAN. EMC recommends a 1-gigabit Ethernet LAN for best performance.

The following network information from the person responsible for your network: Static IP address for each SP in the storage system. Subnet mask for the LAN to which you will connect the storage-system management ports. Default gateway for the LAN to which you will connect the storage-system management ports. Storage-system iSCSI network information, including static IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway for each storage-system iSCSI port that you will use. The network configuration information, including the IP address and network mask, for any NICs or iSCSI HBAs that you are installing. Cat5 or later Ethernet network cables for storage-system management port connections (one per SP). For any installation, you will need: A Navisphere management station with a supported Internet browser for running Navisphere Express and on the same network as the storage-system management ports. This host can also be a server. For supported host and browsers, refer to the E-Lab Interoperability Navigator on the Powerlink website. A supported Windows host on the same subnet as the storage-system management ports. You can use this host: As a Navisphere management station To initialize the storage system To generate a high-availability report of your ESX Server (with version 6.28 or later of the Windows server utility). To run the Navisphere Service Taskbar, which runs only on a Windows host. As a CLARalert monitor station, which must be a Windows host, but cannot be a server (that is, it cannot send I/O to the storage-system data ports). An ESX Server host with virtual machines configured that is or will be a server with iSCSI connections to the storage system. This server must have a supported server configuration; that is, it must have all required updates, such as hot fixes or patches, installed.

A Navisphere management station with a supported Internet browser that is on the same network as the storage-system management ports. This host can also be the server. For supported Internet browsers, see the AX4-5 release notes on the Service & Support page of the storage-system support website. A Cat5, Cat5e, or Cat6 Ethernet network cable (100 meters maximum) for each iSCSI port that will connect the storage system directly to the NICs or iSCSI HBAs in the server. We recommend Cat6 cables for best performance. These cables may already be connected for a configuration with an existing storage system or existing server. For cable specifications, refer to Technical Specifications on the Learn page of the storage-system support website. A method for writing data to a virtual disk on the storage system that will test the paths from the server to the storage system.

This section describes how to install the storage system at your site. Where to install the parts in a dual-SP system Install the standby power supply (SPS) first, and then the DPE-AX above it. Install any DAE-AX above the DPE-AX.

Enclosure height requirements

Enclosure height requirements and cabinet mounting measurements are based on NEMA units (Us) as described in Table 2.
Table 2 NEMA unit heights Number of NEMA units 1U 2U Actual height 45 mm (1-3/4 in) 90 mm (3-1/2 in)

The predrilled holes in the cabinet channels are based on the U measurement. The holes are predrilled at distances of 1/2 inch, 5/8 inch, 5/8 inch (totaling 1 U), then 1/2 inch, 5/8 inch, 5/8 inch (another U), and so on. On EMC 40U and 40U-C cabinets, the 1U increments are marked by a horizontal line or small hole in the channel. Table 3 lists typical height requirements.

CAUTION Without proper equipment and procedures, you risk damaging disk drives whenever you remove, store, or install them. Do not remove disks prior to installing the chassis. The disk modules in slots 0 through 3 of the DPE-AX provide mirrored boot and recovery capability, and are preconfigured according to their slot assignment before shipment. Do not move a module in slots 0 through 3 from its assigned slot to another slot. Remove one of these modules only if it has failed and you are replacing it with a new module.

For each enclosure: 1. Remove the four screws that are secured with washers and nuts to the black plastic latch brackets; keep the screws and discard the washers and nuts (Figure 4).

When the enclosure slides to the back of the cabinet, the two notches in the rear of the enclosure insert into the rear tabs on the back corner of each rail. The tabs secure and support the rear of the enclosure.
If the enclosure does not slide all the way into the cabinet, you may need to further loosen the screws that hold the rear of the rails in place; adjust the rails to allow the tabs to fit into the notches.

3. Once the enclosure is completely seated into the rear tabs, tighten the four screws (two per rail) that secure the rails to the front channels. 4. Secure the enclosure and latch brackets to each front channel with the four latch bracket screws (Figure 6).

Installing disk modules

If the disk modules shipped separately from the DPE-AX enclosure and the optional DAE-AX enclosures, install them in the enclosure now. If the disk modules are already installed in their enclosures, go to Connecting power cables, page 30 for a base dual-SP system or Connecting the storage-system expansion ports, page 29 for an expansion dual-SP system with one or more DAE-AXs. Handling disk modules Disk modules are extremely sensitive electronic components. Always handle a disk module gently, and observe the following guidelines: Whenever possible or practical, replace a disk module with another of the same model. Refer to the storage-system support website or contact your sales/service provider for a list of approved disk replacements. Follow the instructions in the section on handling FRUs in this document. Disk modules are sensitive to the extreme temperatures sometimes encountered during shipping. We recommend that you leave new disk modules in their shipping material, and expose the package to ambient temperature for at least four hours before attempting to use the new modules in your storage system. Always wear a properly attached ESD wristband when removing or replacing a disk module.
Installing an AX4-5i Storage System in an iSCSI Direct Configuration with a VMware ESX Server 3i Server
17

When removing a disk module, pull the module partially out of the slot, then wait 30 seconds for the drive to spin down before removing it. Place modules on a soft, antistatic surface, such as an industry-standard antistatic foam pad or the container used to ship the module. Never place a disk module directly on a hard surface. Never hit modules, stack modules, or allow them to tip over or fall. Avoid touching any exposed electronic components and circuits on the disk module. Do not remove a faulty disk module until you have a replacement module (with the same or an approved part number) or a filler module available. The part number (PN005xxxxxx) appears on the front of the module. Handling field replaceable units (FRUs) This section describes the precautions that you must take and the general procedures you must follow when removing, installing, and storing any field replaceable unit (FRU). Power issues and FRUs Your storage system is designed to be powered on continuously. Most components are hot swappable; that is, you can replace or install these components while the storage system is running. Front bezels should always be attached and each compartment should contain a FRU or filler panel to ensure EMI compliance and proper air flow over the FRUs. You should not remove a faulty FRU until you have a replacement available. When you replace or install FRUs, you can inadvertently damage the sensitive electronic circuits in the equipment by simply touching them. Electrostatic charge (ESD) that has accumulated on your body discharges through the circuits. If the air in the work area is very dry, running a humidifier in the work area will help decrease the risk of ESD damage. Follow the procedures below to prevent damage to the equipment. Read and understand the following instructions: Provide enough room to work on the equipment. Clear the work site of any unnecessary materials or materials that naturally build
18

Installing an AX4-5i Storage System in an iSCSI Direct Configuration with a VMware ESX Server 3i Server

up electrostatic charge, such as foam packaging, foam cups, cellophane wrappers, and similar items. Do not remove replacement or upgrade FRUs from their antistatic packaging until you are ready to install them. Before you service a storage system, gather together the ESD kit and all other materials you will need. Once servicing begins, avoid moving away from the work site; otherwise, you may build up an electrostatic charge. An ESD wristband is supplied with your storage system. To use it, attach the clip of the ESD wristband (strap) to any bare (unpainted) metal on the storage system; then put the wristband around your wrist with the metal button against your skin. Use the ESD kit when handling any FRU. If an emergency arises and the ESD kit is not available, follow the procedures in the Emergency procedures (without an ESD kit) section. Emergency procedures (without an ESD kit) In an emergency when an ESD kit is not available, use the following procedures to reduce the possibility of an electrostatic discharge by ensuring that your body and the subassembly are at the same electrostatic potential. These procedures are not a substitute for the use of an ESD kit. Follow them only in the event of an emergency. Before touching any FRU, touch a bare (unpainted) metal surface of the cabinet or storage system. Before removing any FRU from its antistatic bag, place one hand firmly on a bare metal surface of the storage system, and at the same time, pick up the FRU while it is still sealed in the antistatic bag. Once you have done this, do not move around the room or touch other furnishings, personnel, or surfaces until you have installed the FRU. When you remove a FRU from the antistatic bag, avoid touching any electronic components and circuits on it. If you must move around the room or touch other surfaces before installing a FRU, first place the FRU back in the antistatic bag. When you are ready again to install the FRU, repeat these procedures.

19

Installing disk modules in the DPE-AX 1. Attach an ESD wristband to your wrist and the storage system. 2. Install a disk module in each of the first four slots in the top row of the DPE-AX, starting with the right-most slot:
If you have both SAS and SATA disks (as noted on the drive carrier), we strongly recommend that you use SAS drives of the same capacity in these slots.

a. Align the disk module with the guides in the slot (Figure 7).

Connecting power cables

This section describes how to connect power cables if you installed the storage system at your site.

Connecting power cables to the DPE-AX and optional DAE-AXs (expansion system)
Connect the power and SPS serial cables: 1. Verify that any cabinet master switches are in the off position. 2. For a dual-SP system, verify that the power switch on each standby power supply (SPS) is off. 3. For a dual-SP system, use the sense cable to connect standby power supply A (SPS A) to the SPS serial ports (marked with a battery symbol) on SP A (Figure 18); if SPS B is present, use a sense cable to connect it to the serial port on SP B (Figure 20).

Connecting the cabinet to a power source

If the storage system is in a rack or cabinet, connect the cabinet or rack AC power cables to the power outlets in your facility. In general, EMC cabinets use two 240-volt AC cables. You should connect power cables on either side of the cabinet to different branch circuits. Connecting to only one branch circuit will degrade the systems high availability. Some cabinet configurations may exceed the 24A derating supported by a single pair of power sources/branch circuits, called power distribution units (PDUs). These configurations use a second pair of PDUs the upper two in your cabinet. Since each active PDU requires a separate power source, a fully configured cabinet uses a total of four 240V branch circuit source connections.

Connecting the storage-system management ports to the LAN

You manage the storage system from a Navisphere management station, which can be a host, a server (host connected to the storage system), or a Navisphere off-array management station with access to the management ports over a specified LAN. In addition, when you first set up the storage system, you initialize it from a host, server, or Navisphere off-array management station connected to the same subnet as the storage-system management ports. The management ports are located on the rear of the chassis and labeled with a LAN symbol.
You cannot manage the storage system from the iSCSI data ports.

Cabling the storage-system management ports to the network

You need a standard CAT 5 or better Ethernet network cable for the management port on each storage-system SP. On each SP connect one end of an Ethernet network cable to the management port on the SP and the other end to the network from which you will manage the storage system (Figure 25).

Confirming hardware installation

Use Navisphere Express to check for hardware alerts before continuing the installation process.

Starting Navisphere Express

1. Open an Internet browser, such as Internet Explorer, Netscape, or Mozilla, on the management host. 2. Enter the IP address of an SP in the system.
This address is the one you assigned when you initialized the system.

If Navisphere Express does not open, make sure that the system is not rebooting. The power button on each SP should be solid/steady green and the other lights should be off. 3. Log in to Navisphere Express by entering the username and password that you specified when you initialized the system.
To view Navisphere Express in Brazilian Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Korean, Japanese, Latin American Spanish, or simplified Chinese, follow the instructions in Adding a Navisphere Language Pack. You can create this document on the system support website by selecting Upgrade and then Add Navisphere Language Pack as the upgrade type. Once you install a language pack, Navisphere Express automatically opens in that language.

Checking for hardware alerts with Navisphere Express

If the Navisphere Express page that opens after you log in contains any hardware alerts, other than the email home or hot spare warnings, follow the instructions in the alert to fix the hardware problem before continuing.
You will create one or more hot spares when you configure the storage system later in the installation process.

Initializing the storage system

After the storage system is fully powered up for the first time, use the Unisphere Storage System Initialization Utility to initialize the storage system. Initialization sets the network parameters for storage-system management and creates a management user account for the storage system so you can manage it over the LAN. On a Windows host, install the Unisphere Initialization Utility using the link below. Start the Unisphere Initialization Utility: Start > Programs > EMC > Unisphere > Unisphere Storage System Initialization Wizard. Follow the online instructions to discover and assign IP addresses to the storage system. The Unisphere Initialization Utility should discover and display the serial number of your storage system. If the discovery operation did not find the storage system you are installing, verify that the storage systems management ports are properly cabled to the network on which the host resides. The management ports and the host must both reside on the same subnet. You can install and run the initialization utility from the ESX Server or from any virtual machine except a NetWare virtual machine.

Before you start

To complete this procedure, you will need: The completed Administration Worksheet. This worksheet shipped with your storage system. If you have not completed it, you should complete it now. This information includes: A static IP address for each storage processor in the storage system (for example, http://123.45.6.7). The subnet mask of the LAN to which the storage system is connected. The default gateway address of the LAN to which the storage system is connected. The storage-system serial number, which is the HW S/N number located on the back of the DPE-AX (Figure 26).

If the host is behind a firewall, the TCP/IP port 2162 (outgoing) and 2163 (incoming), which the initialization utility uses, must be open for the utility to function properly.

Verifying that the storage system is powered up

The Storage System Initialization Utility does not recognize a storage system that is not powered up, so do not run this utility until you verify that the storage system is completely powered up. The storage system can take 5 to 6 minutes to complete its first powerup. Green activity lights flash during the power on self-test (POST). When the powerup is complete the power button on each SP remains solid/steady green and the amber fault lights go off (Figure 27).

Running the Storage System Initialization Utility on

You can run the storage system initialization utility from the hoston which it is installed. Before continuing make sure that the storage system is powered up completely. Starting the initialization utility on an ESX Server host To start the text-based version of the utility, enter:

Using the text-based initialization utility on an ESX Server After you start the utility, it automatically scans the subnet for supported systems. When this system discovery operation is complete, the utility lists, by hardware product ID/serial number, all uninitialized and initialized systems it found. The hardware serial number is on a blue label on the rear of the chassis. If the discovery operation did not find the system you are installing, verify that the systems management ports are properly cabled to the LAN on which the host resides. The management ports and the host must both reside on the same physical subnet. Use the information in the System Management Ports worksheet from the system configuration planning guide, planning worksheets document, or the administration worksheet, and follow the instructions on the screen to change the systems name, to set the network parameters for the system management ports, and to set the systems management user account settings. If you entered an SP IP address for the first time or changed an SP IP address, the utility reboots the system, and green activity lights flash.

Upgrading storage-system software

If you purchased the Expansion Pack, install the expansion pack enabler now. For optimal performance, the storage system should be running the latest release of the FLARE Operating Environment (OE). The version number of this release is displayed on the storage-system support website. If the storage system is not running this version, install it now.
To display the FLARE OE version with Navisphere Express, in the navigation pane, select System and then Software.

Install the storage-system software with the software upgrade feature of Navisphere Express or the Software Assistant, which is part of the Navisphere Service Taskbar (NST). With Navisphere Express you can install only one software package (FLARE OE version, enabler, or language pack) at a time. With the Software Assistant, you can install multiple software packages (FLARE OE version, enabler, language pack) at the same time; however, it requires a Windows host or server on the same network as the storage-system management ports. When to install a Navisphere language pack A Navisphere language pack is updated only if the Navisphere user interface (UI) changes in the FLARE OE. Typically the language pack is available after the English FLARE OE version is available. If you install FLARE OE with an updated Navisphere UI, then until you install the new version of the language pack, text changes in the Navisphere UI are displayed in English and unchanged text continues to be displayed in the language, including the Navisphere Express help text. To ensure that all text changes and help changes in the Navisphere UI are displayed in the language, you should update the language pack as soon as the new version is available. To determine if the Navisphere UI changed in a new FLARE OE version, refer to the AX4-5 Integrated

Upgrading storage-system software with Navisphere Express

You can install only one software package (FLARE OE version, enabler, or language pack) at a time with the Navisphere Express upgrade feature. Installing updated FLARE OE or a software enabler using Navisphere Express

CAUTION During the software installation procedure: The storage system must not have any faulted or transitioning components. You can view the current state of storage-system components on the Navipshere Express View Components page. You must not power down or reboot the storage system, power down an SP, or remove any components. Doing so may put the storage system in a state from which it cannot be restarted. For a dual-SP system: The software installation procedure reboots SP A, and then after the reboot of SP A completes, it reboots SP B. This causes any connected servers that are not configured for high availability (not connected to each SP) to lose access to the storage system until the operation is completed.

1. If you are updating FLARE OE software, download the latest FLARE OE version from the CLARiiON AX4-5 part of the Downloads and Licensing section of the Powerlink website (http://Powerlink.EMC.com) onto the host or server from which you will install the software.
This host or server must be on the same network as the storage-system management ports.

Registering the storage-system configuration with your service provider

Read this section if you are installing a new storage system and you have a Windows client connection to the storage-system management ports. We strongly recommend that you use the Storage System Registration wizard to send site and storage-system configuration information to your provider. Your provider uses this information to supply proactive and timely support. The registration wizard is part of the Unisphere Service Manager (USM), which runs on a Windows client that is connected to the storage-system management ports.
If you do not have a Windows server or host, your service provider must register your storage system.

The Storage System Registration wizard asks you several questions about the site where the storage system is installed and your support provider contact. It sends this information and basic storage-system configuration details to your service provider either directly over the Internet or using email. If you do not have an Internet connection, the wizard lets you save the registration information to a file, which you can send to your service provider. If you decide not to register your storage system at this time or you do not have Internet access and email, you can still run the wizard to collect the data and send it to your service provider at a later time. If you do not register now, you may spend significantly more time registering it later.

Installing NICs or iSCSI HBAs in the server

For the server to communicate with the system iSCSI data ports, it must have one or more supported NICs or iSCSI HBAs installed.

Before you start

To complete this procedure, you will need one or more supported NICs or iSCSI HBAs with the latest supported BIOS and drivers. For information on supported NICs or iSCSI HBAs, BIOS, and drivers, refer to the support matrix on the Service & Support page of the system support website.
We recommend that you never mix NICs or iSCSI HBAs from different vendors in the same server.

Installing NICs or iSCSI HBAs

CAUTION NICs or iSCSI HBAs are very susceptible to damage caused by static discharge and need to be handled accordingly. Before handling NICs or iSCSI HBAs, observe the following precautions: Store NICs or iSCSI HBAs in antistatic bags. Use a ground (ESD) strap whenever you handle NICs or iSCSI HBAs. Never plug or unplug NICs or iSCSI HBAs with the power on. Severe component damage can result.

1. If the server is powered up: a. Shut down the servers operating system. b. Power down the server. c. Unplug the servers power cord from the power outlet.

Assigning an IP address to a NIC or iSCSI HBA

Assign an IP address to each NIC or iSCSI HBA in the server that will be connected to the system. IMPORTANT If you configured your system iSCSI connections to your Windows virtual machine with NICs, assign an IP address to the NIC in the Windows virtual machine. If you configured your system connections to your Hyper-V or ESX server, assign an IP address to the NIC in the Hyper-V or ESX server. If you have a non-Windows virtual machine or a Windows virtual machine with iSCSI HBAs, perform this procedure on the Hyper-V or ESX server. For instructions on assigning an IP address on a Windows 2003 virtual machine, generate a new document and select the appropriate Windows operating system. For the NIC or iSCSI HBA IP addresses, refer to the iSCSI target and initiator port network information worksheet, which you should have completed when you planned your configuration using the Administration Worksheet and the configuration and planning guide.

Assigning an IP address to a NIC for an ESXi Server

To configure an ESXi Server for a NIC, you use the VMkernel to: Create a virtual switch (Vswitch) if you do not have one. Assign the NIC to the virtual switch. For failover to work between multiple NICs, make sure that the NICs are on the same virtual switch so they are on the same NIC team using the same IP address. For detailed information on configuring the VMkernel for software-initiated iSCSI storage, see the document, Virtual Infrastructure Server Configuration Guide. 1. Login to the VMware VI client as administrator. 2. From the inventory panel. select the server with the iSCSI initiator to add to a virtual switch. 3. Installing Unisphere server software

You cannot install the host agent or server utility on the ESXi Server because the ESXi Server has no Service Console to install or run this software program. Registration of the EMC system happens automatically when the ESXi Server reboots or when you rescan the host bus adapters. Therefore, manual registration is not necessary. If you configured your system connections to your Windows virtual machine with NICs, you can install the host agent or server utility on the Windows virtual machine when you attach your virtual machine to your system. For instructions on attaching your Windows virtual machine to the system, generate a new document and select the appropriate Windows operating system. If you plan to install Navisphere CLI, Admsnap, or Admhost, you must install them on a virtual machine. For instructions on installing the Navisphere CLI, Admsnap, or Admhost on a virtual machine, generate a new document and select the operating system running on the virtual machine.

Requirements for Unisphere server software

To run Unisphere server software, your server must meet the following requirements: Run a supported version of the operating system. Be connected to at least one SP (two SPs for high availability) in each system either directly or through a switch or hub. Each SP must have an IP connection. For the host agent and CLI only - Be on a TCP/IP network connected to at least one SP (two SPs for high availability) in the system. The TCP/IP network connection allows the server to send LUN mapping information to the system and it allows or Navisphere CLI to communicate with the system over the network. Have a configured TCP/IP network connection to any remote hosts that you will use to manage the systems, including: any server whose browser you will use to access , a supported Windows server running Unisphere Server software (replaces the Navisphere Management Server software),

You can create this document on the system support website by selecting Upgrade and then Add Navisphere Language Pack as the upgrade type. Once you install a language pack, Navisphere Express automatically opens in that language.

Configuring storage and event notification on a new storage system with Navisphere Express
1. Locate your completed storage-system disk information worksheet so you can refer to it in the steps that follow. 2. Create one or more hot spares.
A hot spare is a single global spare disk that serves as a temporary replacement for any failed disk in the storage system. The storage system automatically reconstructs data from the failed disk onto the hot spare, so the data is always available. If you have both SAS and SATA disks in the storage system, we strongly recommend that you create a hot spare for each type of disk. A SAS disk can be a hot spare for a SATA disk and vice versa, but using a SAS disk as a hot spare for a SATA disk will most likely degrade the disk pool performance. Using a SATA disk as a hot spare for a SAS disk could waste disk space since the SATA drives generally have greater storage capacity.

In the navigation pane, under Manage, click Hot Spare. For details on creating a hot spare, use the Navisphere Express Help Center. 3. Create one or more disk pools on which to create virtual disks.

Installing an AX4-5i Storage System in an iSCSI Direct Configuration with a VMware ESX Server 3i Server

69

A disk pool is a set of disks, all with the same capacity and redundancy, on which you create one or more virtual disks. A RAID 6 disk pool usually has 6 or 12 disks, but can have 4, 8, 10, 14, or 16 disks. RAID 6 disk pools are supported only for AX4-5 series storage systems running FLARE OE version 02.23.050.5.7xx or later. A RAID 5 disk pool must include at least three disks, a RAID 3 disk pool must include five or nine disks, and a RAID 1/0 disk must include at least two disks. The storage system supports a maximum of thirty disk pools.

In the navigation pane, under Manage, click Disk Pools. For details on creating a disk pool, use the Navisphere Express Help Center. For a dual-SP system, you should create at least two disk pools since the software assigns each disk pool you create to an SP as follows: disk pool 1 to SP A, disk pool 2 to SP B, disk pool 3 to SP A, and disk pool 4 to SP B. All the virtual disks you create on a disk pool are automatically assigned to the same SP as the disk pool, so if you create only one disk pool on the storage system, all virtual disks on the storage system are assigned to SP A and all data received or sent goes through SP A only.
The disk modules marked 0 through 3 contain storage-system software or reserved space according to their slot assignment. Do not move any disk marked 0 through 3 from its assigned slot. Remove it only to replace the disk module. Part of the space on these disks is reserved or preloaded with system data, and as a result, is not available for your data. If you combine operating system disks in a disk pool with other disks, each of the other disks loses space for your data equal to the system data space on an operating system disk.

4. Create one or more virtual disks on each disk pool.

A virtual disk is a grouping of disk partitions into one span of disk storage space. Each virtual disk you create is distributed equally across the disks in the disk pool. A virtual disk looks like an individual disk to the servers operating system. Each disk pool can have 128 virtual disks.

However, you must wait until the servers are connected and registered before you can assign these virtual disks to them. 5. Assign one or more virtual disks to the server.
To send data to or receive data from the virtual disks, you must assign the virtual disks to a server.

In the navigation pane, under Manage, click Virtual Disks. For details on assigning a virtual disk to a server, use the Navisphere Express Help Center. 6. Verify that the virtual disks were assigned to the server by viewing the Manage Servers page. In the navigation pane, under Manage, click Servers. You should see the virtual disks you assigned to the server listed in the Virtual Disks column of the servers row. 7. Use the Event Notification page to configure the storage system to send an e-mail message when it encounters a problem. In the navigation pane, under System, click Settings, and then click Event Notification. For details on configuring the storage system to send e-mail messages, use the Navisphere Express Help Center.

Verifying that each virtual disk is fully initialized using Navisphere Express
Although a new virtual disk is assigned to the server, the server cannot see the new disk until it is fully initialized. The time to complete the initialization process varies with the size of the virtual disk and other parameters. For example, a 1 TB virtual disk in a RAID 5 disk pool of

11 disks can take about 70 minutes to initialize with no host I/O to other virtual disks in the disk pool. To determine if any virtual disks are initializing: 1. Start Navisphere Express on the storage system with the virtual disks. 2. In the navigation pane under Manage, click Virtual Disk. 3. In the Manage Virtual Disks screen, if the status of any virtual disk is Initializing, wait until the initialization is complete before continuing.

Making virtual disks visible to an ESXi Server

Read this section for all configurations. To allow ESXi Server to access virtual disks you created, you must make the virtual disks visible to ESXi Server. Making virtual disks visible to an ESXi Server 1. Log in to the VMware VI Client as administrator. 2. From the inventory panel, select the server, and click the Configuration tab. 3. Under Hardware, click Storage Adapters. 4. In the list of adapters, select the adapter (NIC or iSCSI HBA), and click Rescan above the Storage Adapters panel.
NICs are listed under iSCSI Software Adapters.

5. In the Rescan dialog box, select both Scan for New Storage Devices and Scan for New VMFS Volumes, and click OK. New virtual disks that you created appear in the disk/LUNs list.

6. Verify that the virtual disks that you created are in the disk/LUNs list.

Verifying that native multipath failover sees all paths to the virtual disks
IMPORTANT If you have a Windows virtual machine with NICs, in order for a virtual machine to see LUNs, your Windows virtual machine with NICs must be connected to the system (either directly or through a network) or the Hyper-V or ESX server has to assign the LUNs to the virtual machine. A virtual machine cannot see LUNs using both of these methods at the same time if the LUNs assigned by the ESX server are physical compatibility mode RDM devices. If you have an non-Windows virtual machine or Windows virtual machine with iSCSI HBAs, perform this procedure on your Hyper-V or ESX server.

1. For paths to VMFS volumes: a. Log in to the VMware VI client as administrator. b. From the inventory panel, select the server, and click the Configuration tab. c. Under Hardware, click Storage and select the LUN (virtual disk). d. Click Properties and then Volume Properties. e. In the Volume Properties page, click Manage Paths. The Manage Paths window lists the paths and their states for all paths from the server to the virtual disks. ESX Server scans for paths to virtual disks. When it finds a virtual disk through a path, it assigns a name to the virtual disk. For example, for NICs, vmhba40:12:2, read from left to right, is a NIC adapter, the target (SP), and the LUN (virtual disk through a path, it assigns a name to the 2), and for iSCSI HBAs, vmhba1:12:2, read from left to right, is an iSCSI HBA adapter, the target (SP), and the LUN (virtual disk 2). 2. For paths to RDM volumes: a. Log in to the VMware VI client as administrator.

b. From the inventory panel, select the server, and click the Configuration tab. c. In the Configuration tab, click Storage Adapters. d. Select the adapter, right-click the path, and click Manage Paths. The Manage Paths window lists the paths and their states for all paths from the server to the virtual disks ESX Server scans for paths to virtual disks. When it finds a virtual disk through a path, it assigns a name to the virtual disk. For example, for NICs,vmhba40:12:2, read from left to right, is a NIC adapter, the target (SP), and the LUN (virtual disk 2), and for iSCSI HBAs vmhba1:12:2, read from left to right, is an iSCSI HBA adapter, the target (SP), and the LUN (virtual disk 2). 3. For each virtual disks, verify that all paths to the system are working: In the Status column of the Manage Paths, you should see: One active path to each virtual disk One or more standby (non-active) paths to each virtual disk No dead paths. The active path is the path that the server is currently using to access data on the virtual disk. The standby paths are available for failover, should the active path fail. You should not see any dead paths, which are paths that have failed and need to be repaired. Disabled paths are paths that have been intentionally turned off. Example For NICs in a direct configuration, you should see something like:
Device vmhba40:12:0 vmhba40:14:0 SAN Identifier iqn.199204.com.emc:cx.hk1192200635.a0 iqn.199204.com.emc:cx.hk1192200635.b0 Status Active Standby

Example For iSCSI HBAs in a direct configuration, you should see something like:

Status Active Standby

Under SAN Identifier, the iSCSI qualified names (iqns) indicates the SP used for each path. In the iqn, last two digits from the left indicate the SP port. For the example iqn.199204.com.emc:cx.hk1192200635.nn, the nn indicates the SP port as follows: a0 = SP A port 0 a1 = SP A port 1 b0 = SP B port 0 b1 = SP B port 1 The example for NICs in a direct configuration shows two paths to virtual disk 0 through two NICs one path to SP A port 0 and one path to SP B port 0. The example for iSCSI HBAs in a direct configuration shows two paths to virtual disk 0 through two iSCSI HBAs one path to SP A port 0 and one path to SP B port 0.

Verifying your high-availability iSCSI configuration

Use the server high-availability feature in the Unisphere Server Utility to verify your iSCSI configuration is highly available (for example, each NIC has at least one active path to each storage processor) and path management software is installed and running on the server.

Using the server utility to verify your high-availability configuration

To generate a report of your ESXi Server on a Windows server: 1. From the Unisphere Server Utilitys Welcome screen, select Verify Server High-Availability. 2. Select Valid Server Configuration only. 3. In the Select Host Type screen, select ESXi Server. 4. Under Discovery Settings for ESXi Server, select one of the following: ESX and enter the IPv4 IP address, username, and password for the ESX Server. Virtual Center and enter the IPv4 IP address, username, and password for the virtual center, then enter the IPv4 IP address for the ESX Server for which you want to generate a report. 5. Click Next.

76

Installing an AX4-5i Storage System in an iSCSI Direct Configuration with a VMware ESX Server 3i Server

6. In the Select Report Directory screen, select the location where you want the system to save the high-availability status report. Click Next. 7. Read the summary and if it is accurate, click Next to generate the report. If not, click Back to return to the screen where you need to correct the data. The utility determines if the server is configured for high availability by verifying that the server has at least one connection path to each system SP, and that PowerPath or some other failover software, such as DMP, is running. It does not detect native failover software, such as VMware native failover. 8. Review and resolve any issues reported on the Issues tab of the generated report.

Rescanning and sending ESXi Server disk information to the system

The host agent and server utility are not supported on the ESXi Server because the ESXi Server has no Service Console to install or run these software programs. Registration of the system happens automatically when the ESXi Server reboots or when you rescan the host bus adapters.

On your ESXi Server, rescan your host bus adapters. After rescanning your host bus adapters, do the following:

Configuring ESXi Server native failover

ESXi Server includes native failover to manage the I/O paths between the server and system. Native failover provides multiple paths from the server to the system, to maintain a constant connection between the server and the system.

Configuring native failover on an ESXi Server

To use the ESXi Server native failover with your system, you must implement the Most Recently Used (MRU) failover policy. 1. For a VMFS volume: a. From the inventory panel, select the server, and click the Configuration tab. b. Under Hardware, click Storage and select the LUN. c. Click Properties and then Volume Properties. d. In the volume properties page, click Manage Paths. 2. For a raw disk mapping (RDM) volume: a. From the inventory panel, select the server, and click the Configuration tab. b. Under Hardware, click Storage Adapters. c. In the storage adapters page, select the adapter (vmhbax), right-click the path, and click Manage Paths. 3. In the Manage Paths page, under Policy, verify that the policy is most recently used. 4. If the policy is fixed: a. Under Policy, click Change. b. In the policy selection dialog box, select Most Recently Used and click OK.

Making virtual disks available to virtual machines

Read this section if you created virtual disks on the system. Once a virtual disk is visible to ESX Server you can: Create a datastore (VMFS volume) on the virtual disk, and assign capacity on the VMFS volume to virtual machines. A VMFS volume is a high-performance file system for storing large files, such as VMware virtual disks for virtual machines. or Configure the virtual disk as a raw device mapping volume (RDM) and assign it to a virtual machine. Consider the following when deciding how to configure your virtual disks:
Function Snapshots Expanding virtual disks Booting virtual machines from virtual disks VMotion Adding multiple partitions to a single virtual disk Supported on raw device mapping volumes? Yes Yes Yes Yes No (see note) Supported on VMFS volumes? No No Yes Yes Yes

Note: You can add the entire virtual disk to only one virtual machine. At the virtual machine level, you can create multiple partitions.

If you want to create a snapshot of a virtual disk or if you want to expand a virtual disk, do not create a datastore (VMFS volume) on the virtual disk. The virtual disk must remain raw (unformatted). You must then configure the virtual disk as a raw device mapping volume. You can configure a raw device mapping volume when you assign the virtual disk to a virtual machine. However, to configure a raw device mapping volume, you must already have a local disk on the ESX Server or a different virtual disk assigned to the ESX Server that is formatted with the VMFS file system. Use this virtual disk format to store the mapping file you create during the raw device mapping configuration process.
80

Installing an AX4-5i Storage System in an iSCSI Direct Configuration with a VMware ESX Server 3i Server

After you create a datastore (VMFS volumes) or raw device mapping volume on a virtual disk, you can allocate the datastore or volume to virtual machines. You can allocate the whole datastore (VMFS volume) to a single virtual machine, or partition the volume and allocate the partitions to multiple virtual machines. When you create a raw device mapping volume, you allocate the entire volume to a single virtual machine. After you create a raw device mapping volume, the virtual machine accesses the mapping file as it would an image file in a VMFS volume. The mapping file then accesses the virtual disk, providing the virtual machine with access to the virtual disk. The mapping file is stored in an existing VMFS volume and, to a virtual machine, appears as any other image file in a VMFS volume. This VMFS volume cannot exist on the virtual disk that you want to configure as a raw device mapping volume. It must exist on a different virtual disk or on your local disk.
If you want to boot a virtual machine from a virtual disk, install the guest operating system on a virtual disk allocated to the virtual machine.

Preparing VMware virtual disks to receive data

Before a virtual machine can send data to a virtual disk that is a VMFS volume, you must do the following: For a Linux virtual machine: Partition the VMware virtual disk. Create and mount a file system on the partition. For a NetWare virtual machine: Partition the VMware virtual disk. Create and mount a file system on the partition. For a Solaris virtual machine: Partition the VMware virtual disk. Create and mount a file system on the partition. For a Windows virtual machine: Write a signature to the VMware virtual disk. Either create partitions on a basic disk or create volumes on a dynamic disk.

Verifying your ESXi Server failover configuration

Before you store data on virtual disks, use the procedure in this section to verify your failover configuration.
Your failover policy should be set to MRU.

Verifying your ESXi Server native failover configuration (dual-SP)

If your server has a high-availability configuration, that is, at least one NIC or iSCSI HBA path to each SP on the system, your environment is enabled for failover and you can proceed to verify your failover configuration. If you do not have a highavailability configuration, your environment is not enabled for failover. A NIC or iSCSI HBA or SP failure will leave the server without access to the data. 1. If you connected a new server to an existing system, stop all applications from accessing the system and disable user logins to the server. 2. For example: For a NICs vmhba40:12:2, read from left to right, is a NIC adapter, the target (SP), and the LUN (virtual disk 2).

87

For iSCSI HBAs vmhba1:12:2, read from left to right, is an iSCSI HBA adapter, the target (SP), and the LUN (virtual disk 2). 3. For paths to RDM volumes: a. Log in to the VMware VI client as administrator. b. From the inventory panel, select the server, and click the Configuration tab. c. In the Configuration tab, click Storage Adapters. d. Select the adapter, right-click the path, and click Manage Paths. The Manage Paths window lists the paths and their states for all paths from the server to the virtual disks. ESX Server scans for paths to virtual disks. When it finds a virtual disk through a path, it assigns a name to the virtual disk. For example: For NICs vmhba40:12:2, read from left to right, is a NIC adapter, the target (SP), and the LUN (virtual disk 2) For iSCSI HBAs vmhba1:12:2, read from left to right, is an iSCSI HBA adapter, the target (SP), and the LUN (virtual disk 2). 4. Start writing data from the server to all the virtual disks in the system connected to the server. 5. For each virtual disks, verify that all paths to the system are working: In the Status column of the Manage Paths window, you should see: All paths show as active to each virtual disk if your failover policy is set to Fixed. One or more active paths to each virtual disk if your failover policy is set to Round Robin. One active path to each virtual disk if your failover policy is set to MRU. One or more standby (non-active) paths to each virtual disk if your failover policy is set to MRU or Round Robin. No dead paths The active path is the path that the server is currently using to access data on the virtual disk. The standby paths are available for
88

Installing an AX4-5i Storage System in an iSCSI Direct Configuration with a VMware ESX Server 3i Server

failover, should the active path fail.

Device vmhba1:12:0 vmhba2:14:0 SAN Identifier iqn.199204.com.emc:cx.hk1192200635.a0 iqn.199204.com.emc:cx.hk1192200635.b0 Status Active Standby

The example for iSCSI HBAs in a direct configuration shows two paths to virtual disk 0 through two iSCSI HBAs one path to SP A port 0 and one path to SP B port 0. 6. Choose a virtual disk that is currently accessed through the paths that you want to test.

89

7. Start writing data to the disk. Although you should try to write enough data to last through the test, you can trigger failover at any time by writing data to an active path that is disconnected. 8. For a new system, disable the path from the active SP by unplugging the cables from the ports on the SP. 9. For an existing system, disable the path from the active NIC or iSCSI HBA port by unplugging the cable from either the NIC or iSCSI HBA port or the SP port to which the NIC or iSCSI HBA port is connected. 10. After approximately 60 seconds, refresh the Failover Paths page and verify that a red circle now appears next to the previously active path. The red circle indicates that the path should be active, but it has failed. If failover is working correctly, a green diamond appears next to a path from the secondary NIC or iSCSI HBA, indicating that the secondary NIC or iSCSI HBA is now handling data communication to the disk. This indicates that the original active path is no longer operational, and a failover has occurred to the other SP (trespass). 11. Reconnect the path that you disconnected. With the failover policy set to most recently used (MRU), the active path does not automatically revert back to the original active path. As a result, when an SP failover occurs, the disks remain on the other SP unless you restore the disks to the original SP. 12. For each disk you want to restore to the original SP: a. From Navisphere Express, under Manage choose Virtual Disks. b. Under Virtual Disk Name select the virtual disk. c. Click Virtual Access Details. The Virtual Access Details page opens, which lists the SP the disk is currently accessed through. The SP listed is the failover SP. d. To restore the disk to the original SP, click Change Ports for Access.
