takedowns or throws are standing methods of attack and defense whose purpose is to bring an attacker to the ground through the . I have isolated the basic standing techniques of Jiu-jitsu that most beginners will encounter during their first year of training. Another reason for this separation is to "force" students to move away from areas of natural skill in order to develop their weaker areas. Quedas Called "quedas' in Brazilian Por tuguese. There are many reasons for this that you will come to understand over time. instructors of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu will usually star t free sparring sessions on the knees and standing at separate times. Some students who may not be very proficient on the ground may choose to stay standing if given the oppor tunity while "sparring" star ts standing. This may occur due to a natural fear of "losing" or elevated ego. This hesitation is relieved by the separation of specific positions during training and practice. but to provide you with a simple understanding: the more comfor table you are on the ground. the more relaxed you will be about engaging in the practice of Jiu-jitsu with full resistance. In this next section. much of your practice will be isolated to one specific area of concentration for a particular class period. This complete development of Jiu-jitsu's basic techniques is important before moving on to more advanced techniques. Therefore.Techniques from the Standing Position: As a beginner. Since the focus of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu for beginners is on groundwork and the body positioning that occurs there. Many par ticipants are also initially hesitant due to a natural feeling of cluster phobia that occurs while someone is pinning you on the floor. Practical application and basic understanding of these techniques is required by most instructors before promotion to blue belt can occur. much of your "sparring" or free practice with resistance will occur with both par ticipants star ting on the knees.

Getting to the Clinch Many great champions of Jiu-jitsu through its recent hist or y have said. My lef t hand now reaches down to grab my opponent ’s r ight ankle. I step for ward enough so that my belly is touchi n g m y o p p o n e n t ’s i n n e r r i g h t leg. These methods of follow -up att ack will be discussed later in this text.w i s e twisting motion may be employed in order to provide me with extra momentum dur ing the application of this technique. I will use a technique that comes from Judo called O Uchi Ga ri . One impor tant thing to remember is that at any time. he will have to release his hold to defend himself or be hit. I lear ned this techniq ue while studying a classical for m of Jiujitsu and believe it to be ver y ef fective in the event that a person attacks you in this way . 2 . but the purpose of this book is simply to illustrate basic techniques. This is a ver y unique defense that I have not seen elsewhere. If you strike your opponent to the face.1 Basic Throat or Lapel Grab Defense In this next segment. they are not defending a strike to the face. Some practitioners of Jiujitsu are against methods of striking. I will illustr ate a defense against a common lapel or throat gr ab. It is an issue that I have gone into great detail about philosophically in The Master Text. you may simply strike your opponent to the face in order to release this hold. If his arms are grabbing you.
By practicing this technique.3 4 To begin this movement. My right arm reaches over my opponent’s lef t ar m until my r ight hand is pointing down between my opponent’s arms. Once you master this movement. In figure 4. I duck my head under his right armpit while still controlling his right arm. I control my opponent’s right hand with my left (figure 3). Note that I will not let go of this hand throughout the course of the entire technique . but is crucial now to protect myself from potential chokes that my opponent may choose to apply. your right wrist will begin to twist if you choose to continue holding my jacket.this is impor tant. passing my right side to my opponent’s left. you will notice that if it is being per for med on you. 43 . This control of the right arm will be impor tant later to finish him. you may try it quickly in oder to actually flip your opponent over. I secure my opponent ’s r ight hand as shown here and begin to push his elbow down and for ward. I will not give him the same option with his right hand. The pain at his wrist will cause most to submit at this point. My palm is over the top of his hand with my fingers gr ipping the pinky -side of his hand. creating pressure on his wrist as I just described and his shoulder by pushing his elbow down and pulling up on his hand. In figure 6.5 6 I will continue to step through in a counter clock-wise motion until I am positioned as shown in figure 5. You will notice that because I per for med this movement slowly . Take note of this grip I am using on my opponent ’s r ight hand . This is a typical “street hold” that all Jiu-jitsu students must l e a r n t o d e fe n d a g a i n s t . I grab his sleeve at the shoulder with my right hand and pull down. To avoid additional pressure on my neck dur ing this movement.Rear Choke Defense 1 In this situation. In figure 1. I will continue to pull down on my opponent ’s r ight ar m with both of my arms. I also grab his wr ist with my lef t hand as shown. I drive my right shoulder into his right s h o u l d e r a n d m a i n t a i n p re s s u re o n h i s s h o u l d e r.4 5 The pressure created on m y o p p o n e n t ’s r i g h t s h o u l d e r will cause him to lose his balance to the r ight side of his body . When I do so. As I do this. I must be sure to pass my centerline beyond his and lean fo r w a rd s o h e c a n n o t c o u n t e r m y t h ro w . 49 . My first pr ior ity is to “break his gr ip” so that I may begin to escape. I spread my ar ms apar t as shown here to the lef t.

I will lift and turn him until I have enough height a n d l e v e r a ge t o “ d u m p ” h i m o n his head or back.5 I will now squat slightly. . The twisting motion is important technically because it will actually increase my power to move my opponent ’s head. I w i l l b e g i n to posture up. As I look up (figure 3). This action of looking up will help to completely release the gr ip my opponent has on my neck.3 At t h i s p o i n t . 4 I use the twisting-move t o s p i n m y o p p o n e n t a ro u n d a s shown here in figure 4.

I will drop my hands a little to draw my opponent’s (left) attention to my head. As my opponent punches. I keep my leg close and my head back. I also grab his lead hand as shown. My head is also high under his armpit to stop him from elbowing me to the back of the head. . 3 4 Notice how my left shoulder is touching my left ear. I tilt my head back slightly to keep it just out of range. In doing so. I hold his back tightly to stop him from stepping back. his elbows will raise from his waist and clear a path to it for me to enter for 2 a take down. This is to avoid the guillotine choke.
