AYN RAND – ANTHEM

1. Find definitions of the word “anthem.”


A specicfic form of Angelic church music, or more
generally , a song ( or compisition) of celebration, usually
acting as a symbol for a distinct group of people, as in the
term “ national anthem” or “ sports anthem.”

2. What is the meaning of Utopia?


A name for an ideal community, taken from title of the
book written in 1516 by Sir Thomas More describing a
fictional island in the atlantic ocean.

3. What is the opposite if the word Utopia?


Dystopia is a negative utopia : a totalitarian and
repressive world.
4. Find five novels that have the theme of perfect societies.
Name the title, the author and a brief summary for each one.
Paradise lost author is John milton. The poem concerns
judeo-christian story of the fall of man, the temptation of
adam and eve by the fallen angel satan and their
expulsion from the Garden of Eden. Miltons purpose,
stated in this book is to “ justify the ways of god to men”
and also the conflict between god’s eternal foresight and
freewill.

Lost horizon written by James Hilton in the year 1933. It is


best remebered as the origin of shangrila, a fictional
utopian lamasery high in the mountains of tibet. On of the
themes is the allusion of the possibility of another
cataclysmic world war brewing, as indeed it was.
The city of God written by Augustine of Hippo in the early
5th century. The book is about issues concerning god,
martyrdom, jews, and other christian philosphers.
Augustine wrote the novel to explain christianity’s
relationship with competing religions and philosphies and
to the roman government with which it was was
increaslingy intertwined.

Islandia was written by Austin Tappan Wright who was a


Berkeley Law School professor. The book islandia wasn’t
piblished until ten years after his death. Islandia is a fully
realized world which has drawn parallels to Tolkien’s The
Lord of The Rings. The book does not contain any
elements of standard fanatasy fare sucj as dragons,
wizards, magic and so on, and so it is much more a utopia
then a fantasy.

The Republic was written by plato in 380 B.C., in the book


Socrates and various other athenians and foreigners
discuss the meaning of justice. It discusses whether the
just man is happier then the unjust man. In a way that
they construct an imaginery city ruled by philosopher-
kings. It also discusses Plato’s Theory of Forms.

5. Who is Ayn Rand? Write a mini biography of 2 ­3

2, 1905. The writer that Ayn Rand admired most was Victor Hugo.
Ayn rand invented the philosophy objectivism. Ayn Rand died on
March 6, 1982. At the age of six Ayn Rand taught herself to read.
Ayn Rand openly obected mysticism and collectivism.
She married the actor Frank O’Connor they were married fifity
years until Frank died. Her first stage play was Night of January
16th. After writing fountainhead she was recongnized as the
champion of individualism.
