ATTENDANCE THE ROAD TO SUCCESS!

One of the strongest factors influencing a students success in school is attendance. Therefore, we will continue our late policy. Students late 5 times now must serve a lunch-time detention. After accumulating 10 lates, students are required to spend a full day detention (In School Suspension) in the office. If a student reaches 15 lates to class, external suspensions will be, and have been, issued. Semester 2 will see a concerted effort to reduce the number of unexcused absences as well. Our expectation at SCI is that students will attend all scheduled classes unless a reason is provided by a parent/guardian. A phone message can be left 24/7 at 705-428-2639. Notes to the office are also accepted and should indicate the students full name, date, time and reason for absence. If your child is absent and we do not have a reason, you can expect a call from the Office the next day so that we can ensure our records are accurate. If your child has skipped a lesson, they can expect an immediate detention. Excessive absences can result in a suspension. Thank you for your support in helping your child be successful at SCI. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your childs teachers or the Vice Principal, Ms Ellerby.

TEXTBOOKS
Students and parents are reminded that all textbooks are loaned to students for their use and must be returned to the school at the end of each semester. In the event a textbook is lost or damaged, the student will be responsible to pay for its replacement. Students who have outstanding textbooks will not be issued textbooks for their Semester 2 courses until they have returned the books or paid for their loss.

Stayner Collegiate's New Web Site

Our SCI web site will be changing to a new blog format. The site is linked to a Stayner Collegiate Facebook page and a Twitter account (@staynerc) so that you can get regular updates about activities and announcements at the school. The SCI blog also has a mobile format for phones and iPods. The blog will be appearing soon at http://sta.scdsb.on.ca.

SCHOOL COUNCIL MEETINGS

We invite parents/guardians to attend our monthly School Council Meetings the last Monday of every month 7-9pm in our School Library. Next Month's meeting in February, will be a videoconference with parents from other SCDSB schools, organized by PIC (Parent Involvement Committee). All parents/guardians are welcome!

SCDSB HELPS PARENTS & EDUCATORS PLAN TRANSITIONS FOR STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL EDUCATION NEEDS
The Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) is hosting an event to help students, parents and educators plan transitions for students with special education needs. This event takes place on Monday, April 2, 2012, from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at the SCDSB Education Centre, 1170 Highway 26, Midhurst. Community agencies will highlight services available for planning these transitions. Information sessions will be presented and participants will receive the SCDSBs Planning Transitions for Students with Special Education Needs: A Handbook for Parents. The handbook provides guiding questions, calendars of events and tips for supporting students. Event information is also available at www.scdsb.on.ca.

ANNUAL CIRCLE OF LEARNING CONFERENCE FOR PARENTS

The 4th Annual Circle of Learning Conference for Parents will be held on Saturday, April 21, 2012 from 9:00 am2:00 pm. It will take place at the SCDSB Education Centre, 1170 Highway 26, Midhurst, ON. The focus of the Conference is Linking Parents to Student Success will be taking place on Saturday, April 21, 2012. This event is organized by the SCDSB's Parent Involvement Committee (PIC) to support parent involvement in education. It is funded through the Ministry of Education's base grants for Parent Engagement. Information on the workshop topics, a listing of keynote speakers and the agenda will be updated here as they become available in the coming months. NOTICE TO STUDENTS AND LEGAL CUSTODIANS OF STUDENTS REGARDING OUT OF AREA REQUESTS
Under the Simcoe County District School Board procedures (APM A7000), it is possible for students to apply for and receive permission to attend an out of attendance area school. Students will be permitted to continue in attendance as long as space is available. They may be required to return to their home school or transfer to another school when the capacity of the school they are attending has been reached and space is required for students residing within the attendance areas. Even with this permission, however, the responsibility for transportation to and from school is borne by the out-ofattendance-area student and/or parent/guardian.

IMPORTANT NOTICE RE: OPTION SHEETS

Parents and students are reminded about the importance of the course selection process. Students must choose courses where the pathway for post-secondary is considered as the top priority. Every student must successfully complete 30 credits 18 required/compulsory and 12 optional courses. As students choose their courses for next year, they must make sure that they meet these requirements. Stayner Collegiate Institute offers a full range of courses in grades 9 12 for every pathway workplace, apprenticeship, college and university. The school timetable is created in May and June and it is the students course selections that determine the courses that we schedule. However, if the total number of students choosing a course is very low, it will not be scheduled. Some courses may be offered every other year. If SCI cancels a course due to low enrolment, students will be offered another available course. Our Guidance Counsellors, Student Success or Special Education staff will work with you and your child to ensure that they have a full timetable of 8 courses each year. If you have any questions, or you want to discuss your childs strengths, needs and pathways for post-secondary, please feel free to contact us.

When buses are cancelled the schools will remain open for student learning. All efforts are made to post bus cancellations between 6:00-6:30 am. Bus cancellations posted on this site apply to both morning and afternoon bus transportation.

The Guidance Department at SCI is in the process of developing a new website to provide students with the latest updates regarding important events, college and university information, scholarships and bursaries, community service opportunities, and just about anything else students would need to know. Our Nurse Practitioner visits SCI on a monthly basis and we have counsellors from our Georgian Bay Family Health Team and the Canadian Mental Health Association who visit on a weekly basis. Students interested in accessing these services are asked to make an appointment through Guidance. All appointments are confidential.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENT
Attention Grade Twelve students! APRIL 20, 2012 is the deadline for completion of your 40 hours of Community Service. Students must submit their completed community service sheet to Guidance as soon as possible, so that this important graduation requirement may be recorded. Forty hours committed to giving to your community can be easily achieved if you start in Grade 9. Students in Grade 12 are encouraged to complete their service ASAP and hand in the required documentation so that their graduation is not delayed. Deadline for submission is Friday, April 20, 2011.

GRAD GOWN RENTALS

Each year graduating students have the option to rent a grad gown for Commencement. The rental fee of $25 includes a graduation cap that the student gets to keep. Rental fees must be paid during the week of April 9-13 at lunch in Room 201. LIBRARY Movie Mania The Library Advisory Committee (LAC) applied and received funding to promote the library through a Government of Ontario initiative called SpeakUp. The LAC will hold a movie event in Semester 2. Listen to announcements for information.

White Pine has started! This is a reading program featuring 20 awesome Canadian books - 10 fiction and 10 non-fiction. In the spring, students who have read a minimum of 5 of the books will be eligible to vote for this prestigious award. We will be participating in provincial discussions online about the books this year and also setting up videoconferences with other schools around the province. Students should listen to the announcements for more information or come down to the library to talk with Ms. Moritz or Ms. Jeffrey.

PERSONAL PHOTOCOPIES FOR STUDENTS Due to the large volume of personal photocopies students are requesting at the Office, starting February 6 we will be charging 10 cents per photocopy for personal items to cover the cost of the copies and paper.

COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS: Attention Grade 12 Students! Many of you have not yet completed your mandatory community service hours. Signed forms accounting for 40 hours of community service need to be returned to Guidance in order for you to be added to the list of potential graduates. S.A.I.D.
Students Against Impaired Driving will be starting to meet again each Thursday at 11:30 in Room 118. Many of us know first hand how family members or friends lives have suffered irreparable damage because of poor decisions behind the wheel where alcohol or drugs were a factor. Take the message to heart: substance abuse and drivingthat means the use of alcohol or drugs--can result in death or irreversible damage to us and those around us who care. Consider getting involved in this very important group! We especially need new members in semester 2 as we gear up for our SAID Week in May!

Teens for Christ continues to welcome all students as we meet in Room 118 on Tuesdays at 11:30. This group is mainly composed of young people from various youth groups in our community. In the past, we have organized fundraisers for areas of need in the community, such as the local food bank. We prepared a turkey dinner before Christmas for 34 people with connections to The Door youth centre in Stayner. We hope soon to connect with other similar groups in other high schools within the county. All are welcome!

CHESS CLUB
The Chess Club will continue to meet in Room 118 at lunch on Fridays but only upon demand. So far this year, we have had no formal tournaments involving other high schools as in past years. If you are interested in playing, let Mr. Arnott know a little in advance and bring a friend.

FRENCH DEPARTMENT
Stayner Collegiate is pleased to welcome Ms. Lamb to our school in semester two. She is teaching the grade 9 applied program. Congratulations to all students who achieved success in Grade 9 and 10 courses this past semester! All students are encouraged to push hard at meeting deadlines on assignments in second semester. Please also seek extra help during lunchtime or after school when in difficulty with new structures or concepts. Touching base with Mr. Arnott or Ms. Lamb while in the midst of a major unit project or the day before an important unit test can make a huge difference in terms of your success. Students are reminded of the French Department policy on the use of the internet for translation from English to French. We understand and encourage the use of online dictionaries for the translation of individual words. However, like plagiarism, the use of internet translation sites or dictionaries to translate phrases or sentences is strictly forbidden without the consent of your teacher. Your French teacher cannot evaluate your skills when outside assistance is used. Do be aware that many of the sites do a very poor job, too. Use your own brain power for maximum honesty and success! COOPERATIVE EDUCATION PROGRAM Learning from Experience

For many students, these workplace exposures are their first work experiences. Talk to your children about workplace etiquette and socially acceptable behaviour, about the importance of attendance and punctuality and about the need for completion of assignments as due. NATIONAL CANADIAN MENS SNOWBOARD CROSS TEAM SCI welcomed the National Canadian Mens Snowboard Cross Team last Monday Feb 6th for a 2pm assembly. We celebrated excellence and wished our National Team our very best wishes for demonstrating their personal bests and being on the podium with medals for Canada! In the photo, our SCI Alpine team representatives Rylee and Andrew, were our SCI Ambassadors. They welcomed our National Team to SCI, introduced our team to the assembly and also thanked the team for their visit to SCI. We also welcomed three classes from Clearview Meadows Elementary School to our assembly to meet the athletes. We learned a great deal about our athletes, training, safety and excellence.

HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Students registered in phys-ed courses this past semester have demonstrated healthy active living in a variety of activites. The girls in grade 9,10 and 11 developed rhythmic gymnastic routines and the grade 11s demonstrated their superb dance skills in a hip hop presentation for the grade 8s and variety night. They showcased their talent at the Christmas assembly with an excellent Hawaii hula dance. The grade 12 leadership class took on a major project of cleaning and revamping the weight room. This will be an ongoing process for semester two. The outdoor education class was a great success enjoying the outdoors in our community. The students are looking forward to their trip to the Outdoor Adventure Show this semester.

CANADIAN AND WORLD STUDIES

The Canadian and World Studies department is pleased to announce that we will, once again, be going on our hiking trip to New Hampshire. This is the 13th time that Mrs. Brown has offered this trip which is open to any student taking a senior Geography course. These courses include Grade 11 Physical Geography, Grade 11 Travel and Tourism, Grade 12 World Issues and Grade 12 Environment and Resource. We will be departing for the White Mountains on June 6th and returning in the early morning hours of June 10th. Students will have the opportunity to hike the various sections of the Appalachian Trail in the Bretton Woods area. We will be hiking to the top of Mt. Wilard, Mt. Eisenhower, Mt. Jackson, Mt. Pierce and we will be taking the second steepest cog railway in the world, to the top of Mt. Washington, the highest point on the eastern seaboard. If you are interested and would like more information, please see Mrs. Brown as soon as possible, as there are still a few places available. The cost of the trip is $520.00 which includes accommodation, all meals, transportation and entry fees to the Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway, The Flume Gorge and a ride to the top of Mount Washington on the Cog Railway. Dont delay, there are a limited number of spaces available!!

SENIOR BOYS' BASKETBALL

This senior team had a challenging but good season with games away at Pretty River, Midland and Penetang, as well as home games against such teams as ODCVI and Elmvale. The boys played hard and throughout it all displayed commendable team spirit and good sportsmanship, along with perseverance in spite of not tasting the fruits of victory. However, coaches Tony denBok and Mr. Arnott were proud of how well they worked as a group and their dedication. Winning isn't always about the final score! FITNESS TAX CREDIT

Back in 2007 the Government of Canada introduced a tax credit on eligible amounts of up to $500 paid by parents to register a child in an eligible program of physical activity. Requirements of the program include that the activity is ongoing (minimum of 8 weeks duration with a minimum of 1 session per week), that it is supervised and suitable for children. Substantially all of the activities must include a significant amount of physical activity that contributed to cardiorespiratory endurance plus one or more of: muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, or balance. The Tax Credit is for a child who is under 16 at any time in the year and must relate to the cost of registration and may include the cost of administration, instruction, and the rental of facilities. (Must not include the cost of food, accommodation, or transportation.) If you have paid fees to the school for participation in sport activities that would qualify for the credit and you would like to apply, a copy of the form is attached to this newsletter or they are available at the main office. Whew, what a Spartan Spectacular Semester 1. Learning Centre and Life Skills classes enjoyed a wide variety of activities including learning and dressing up for our "Mexico Day", carving pumpkins, swimming at the YMCA, tobogganing and our Field trips to see "The Addams Family" at the Toronto Centre for the Arts and a social movie day at the Gayety Theatre. January 20, 2012 SCI Invites Input on Proposal to Change School Day Schedule Stayner Collegiate Institute (SCI) School Council and Administration are seeking community input regarding the proposal to change the SCI daily school day schedule from the current hours of 8:50am to 3:30pm to the proposed hours of 8:10 am to 2:30 pm. This change, if implemented, would take effect September 4th, 2012. Rationale for Schedule Proposal: The SCI schedule change is being proposed to increase student engagement in lessons and activities, and to provide other anticipated benefits, such as: Less down time at the start and end of day with buses arriving just before start of class and leaving within 10 minutes of the end of day. Fewer classes missed due to participation in co-curricular clubs and sports teams. Students would be departing during the last (5th) period of the day for away games as compared to leaving during 4th period now. Reduced cost to parents for co-curricular sports as a result of lower supply teacher costs to cover for teachers away with teams. Greater opportunity for students to obtain after school help with an earlier end time. Greater opportunity for students to engage in other out-of-school activities due to earlier end time. Greater opportunity for students to seek part-time employment and/or provide support at home due to earlier end time. Equity with other SCDSB schools where school days (from bus drop-off to pick-up) are 6.5 - 7 hours in length; whereas SCIs school day (from bus drop-off to pick-up) is currently 7.5 8 hours in length.

Invitation for Feedback: Parents/guardians, students and other stakeholders will be able to provide feedback at a public meeting to be held on February 15, 2012 at 7 pm in the Library to share information and discuss the proposal. Review of Feedback: The input received will be reviewed by the SCI School Council and SCI School Administration and a recommendation will be developed sometime in the spring.
