On the Road to Justice: Ni un paso atrs - VI National Assembly

WELCOME TO THE 6TH ASAMBLEA OF THE NATIONAL DAY LABORER ORGANIZING NETWORK AND THE CELEBRATION OF OUR 10TH ANNIVERSARY.
The importance of this assembly can be marked by simply looking at what many of us faced in order to arrive here. We travelled in caravans through 287(g) country, risking interfacing with police officers who double as deportation agents, in order to challenge the polimigra. We left kitchen tables stacked high with frequent bills and street corners frequented by too few jobs during winter months. Carrying the fake checks of contractors in our pockets and the echo of hateful cries of minutemen in our ears, weve come together to turn the tide. These are not easy times but we are indeed on the road to justice. Turning the tide is not just about a campaign against immigration enforcement but also about day laborers leading a movement for dignity and justice. When we open a worker center and extend our open hand to our neighbors, we are turning the tide. When our promotion efforts bring new employers to hire ready workers, we are turning the tide. When humble workers refuse to allow this country to take our labor without also recognizing our full humanity, the tide has already begun to turn. Since our last assembly the world has changed around us and we have responded in turn. Our membership and our staff have grown. Weve celebrated proud victories like the passage of the Just Pay for All bill in Illinois. We defeated the Redondo Beach anti-day laborer ordinance. We uncovered the truth about Secure Communities. Our members in Arizona have seen Arpaio stripped of his immigration badge and placed under further investigation. Weve developed new models like the Comites en Defensa del Barrio that were born in Arizona and continue to spread throughout the South. We have thrown ourselves fully into the charge to protect our members from the dangers of police-ICE collaboration in the form of SB 1070 and ICE Access programs while advancing our health and safety, workforce development, and labor work to support our members in improving conditions and advancing our rights. Weve named the Asamblea On the Road to Justice; Ni un paso atrs because we have come too far to go backwards. The hatred and bigotry that we have faced together; from Farmingville to Arizona, from Georgia to Alabama, have spread to the top levels of government. Now even presidential candidates are promoting attrition. But together we are proudly saying were not going even one step backwards. Instead, we are gathering our forces, joined by allies from labor, from faith, and even from Hollywood, to band together to move this country forward. Whenever we defend the rights of day laborers, we advance the rights of everyone. We are a people who lift as we climb. Let us take advantage of our rare time together to strengthen our network and deepen our commitment, to prepare for the challenges ahead, and celebrate the past two years. We formed NDLON ten years ago so that the humble worker on any street corner would have his or her voice respected in the halls of Congress and the wings of the White House. During this national assembly, we set forth for another ten years on the road to justice. - Pablo Alvarado, Director of NDLON

6. The Money Tree: Elements, tools and strategies to build a comprehensive development plan Member organizations face the constant challenge of opening up new funding streams for their organizations and their worker centers. However, as much as we would like, there is no proverbial Money Tree that we can go shake to raise all the funds that we need to advance our missions. Development and fundraising requires an aggressive plan to build out development capacity, structure effective systems of control, and collaborate with allies. This workshop lays the foundation and identifies common ground where development staff across the network can build the infrastructure for a sustainability-working group to survive and thrive over the next years.

12. New Participatory Tools from NDLON and Latin America This workshop focuses on the use of participatory techniques as tools or instruments of support for organizational and educational work. Also, the session presents what these techniques and in which scenarios they can be used. Among the techniques presented are: political analysis techniques, motivation techniques, audio/visual samples, and planning, assessment and gender analysis techniques to name a few. Many people believe that using participatory techniques is already popular education. We often hear people say that their work is carried out using the methodology of popular education. All this not only confuses the meaning, it also robs the true meaning of participatory education. In this sense, the session clarifies what is a technique, which is a method and what is a methodology. Similarly, the facilitator will present the latest techniques that NDLON has developed: (1) The Puzzle of Attrition and Inclusion, (2) The video of Old Antonio, (3) The video of Panchita the Rabbit, (4) the puzzle of Health and Safety in the Workplace, (5) The Occupational Chutes and Ladders and others (6) The Planning Card Deck. There will also be an exhibition of materials of Popular Education from Latin America.

1. Advancing our Mission: Tapping into Pro-Bono Consulting Services To expand and deepen the understanding of how to build and access a relationship with a team of pro-bono consultants that can help advance your organizations mission. In 2011, NDLON and the Taproot Foundation formed a partnership to offer Taproot services grants to member organizations. 7 grants have been awarded. This panel will focus on presenting outcomes and lessons learned from 3 recipients of a Taproot Service Grant. The primary purpose of the grants is to develop the marketing capacity of day laborer worker centers (brochures, websites, marketing). However, it has also expanded to include strengthening internal capacity when appropriate (board development, strategic planning).

2. Popular Education This workshop focuses in the use of participatory techniques as supporting tools or instruments for the educational and organizational work. At the same time, this session explores what these techniques are and in what contexts they can be used. These are some of the techniques that we will explore: Political analysis techniques, entertainment or recreational techniques, audiovisuals, planning, evaluation techniques and gender analysis techniques, to name a few. Many people believe that by using participatory techniques, they are doing Popular Education. It is also very common to hear people refer to their work as being based on and derived from Popular Education methodology. Not only does that confuse people, but it also cheats them of the true meaning of it. This session will explain what is a technique, what is a method, and what is a methodology. In the same manner, the facilitator will present the most recent techniques that NDLON has developed: (1) The Inclusion and Attrition Puzzle, (2) the Old Antonio video, (3) the Panchita the Hare video, (4) The Health and Safety Puzzle, (5) Occupational Chutes and Ladders, and (6) the Planning deck of cards, among others. Also, there will be an exhibition of different Popular Education materials from Latin America.

4. Excluded Worker Congress This workshop is based on what we know about how geese fly in formation: they fly in a v, rotating leadership at the front, with all the other geese constantly guiding and supporting the lead goose. In this workshop we imagine the EWC as a formation of geese, with each goose representing a specific national alliance of workers. Using visual narration, participants use their bodies collectively to create a human tableau (frozen sculpture) to demonstrate a worker issue from different industries and to help start discussions about the similarities and differences that all excluded workers face.

5pm: Press Conference and Rally at LA County Board of Supervisors Building 5:30pm: March after to Federal Building, Downtown Los Angeles NDLON and the national day laborer community and allies demand that the LA County Board of Supervisors and LA County Sheriff Lee Baca put an end to the 287(g) and Secure Communities immigration enforcement programs. LA County is NOT Maricopa County and Los Angeles doesnt need a Sheriff Joe Arpaio! These local/federal immigration enforcement programs cast an overbroad dragnet that tears apart families and drives a wedge between the community and law enforcement. These programs do not make our communities safer but are flawed and should be ended immediately.

On the Road to Justice: Ni un paso atrs - VI National Assembly

BIENVENIDOS Y BIENVENIDAS A LA 6ta ASAMBLEA DE LA RED NACIONAL DE JORNALEROS Y JORNALERAS Y A LA CELEBRACIN DE NUESTRO DCIMO ANIVERSARIO.
