267. parishes presently exist in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Detroit. Based on the
Together in Faith strategic pastoral planning, released February 20, 2012, here is a breakdown of plans for these parishes: l

parishes are planned to close in, or as early as, 2012. See Attachment A-1

Knowing the Difference: Parish vs. Church

A parish closing or merging does not necessarily mean a church building will be closed. The term parish refers to a community of the faithful with a priest pastor, a single parish council and parish finance council. A parish may use more than one church building in which to worship and house its ministerial programs including Christian service and outreach. For example, Our Lady on the River Parish in Saint Clair County is one parish that uses three worship sites (i.e. two church buildings and one chapel), in addition to having a grade school and a high school on one of its campuses.

8 parishes are planned to merge into 4 parishes by the

end of 2012. Because some of these parishes may retain more than one worship site, this may result in between 1 and 4 fewer worship sites. See Attachment A-2

6 parishes will submit acceptable debt repayment

plans by June 2012 or may have to close or merge with a neighboring parish. See Attachment A-3

23 parishes are planned to merge into 11 parishes

by the end of 2013. Because some of these parishes may retain more than one worship site, this will result in between 0 and 12 fewer worship sites. See Attachment A-4

Other Key Definitions

Cluster: Two or more parishes that share a single pastor, but maintain independent finances and have separate parish councils. Sometimes cluster parishes share administrative resources and personnel (e.g. bookkeepers, grounds keepers, catechists, etc.). Also used as a verb, e.g. St. Mary and St. Joseph will make plans to cluster in 2014. Merger: Two parishes coming together to form a single parish with a single pastor, combining both their finances and parish councils. Oftentimes, when parishes merge, they take on a new name and begin as a new parish. Fewer worship sites may result. Closure: The closing of a parish. The territorial boundaries of the closed parish, if any, are redrawn upon closure.

with another parish. Please note: This does not indicate that the parish will cluster or merge in the near-term or by any date certain; rather, these parishes should have a plan to cluster or merge in the event that a pastor is not available or the parish encounters financial deficits. See attachment B.

ATTACHMENT A 1 These 2 parishes are planned to close in/as early as 2012, resulting in 2 fewer worship sites:
Our Lady Queen of Peace in Harper Woods (note: the church building will be for sale as of June 30, 2012; parish activities will continue at the site until the sale is made). St. Donald Parish in Roseville

2 These 8 parishes are planned to merge into four parishes accordingly by the end of 2012:
St. Clement and St. Teresa of Avila, both in Warren, will merge, and consider using a single worship site. In addition, each parish will submit an acceptable debt repayment plan to be approved by the Archdiocese of Detroit by June 30, 2012. St. Francis Xavier in Ecorse will merge with Our Lady of Lourdes in River Rouge* St. Joseph and St. Elizabeth in Wyandotte will merge, eliminating one worship site. St. Genevieve and St. Maurice in Livonia will merge.*

4 These 23 parishes are planned to merge into 11 parishes accordingly by the end of 2013:
Our Lady Queen of Angels and St. Stephen-Mary Mother of the Church, both in Detroit, will develop a plan to merge.* St. Alphonsus in Deaborn, St. Clement in Dearborn, St. Barbara in Dearborn and St. Cunegunda in Detroit will develop a plan to merge, expecting to use multiple worship sites. St. Anthony Lithuanian in Detroit and Divine Providence Lithuanian in Southfield will develop a plan to merge.* St. Francis DAssisi and St. Hedwig parishes, both in Detroit, will develop a plan to merge.* St. Irene in Dundee and St. Joseph in Ida will develop a plan to merge.* St. Joseph in Maybee and St. Patrick in Carleton will develop a plan to merge.* St. Joseph and St. Martha, both in Dearborn, will develop a plan to merge.* St. Leo and St. Cecilia, both in Detroit, will develop a plan to merge and consider use of buildings to maintain their outreach services.* St. Mary in Rockwood and St. Victor in Gibraltar will develop a plan to merge.* St. Mary of Redford and St. Luke, both in Detroit, will develop a plan to merge and consider use of buildings to maintain their outreach services.* St. Patrick in Wyandotte will develop a plan to merge with the previously merged parish of St. Joseph and St. Elizabeth in Wyandotte (See A-2).

ATTACHMENT A

The following 7 parishes are planning to merge into three parishes between 2014 and 2016: Sacred Heart in Roseville, St. Athanasius in Roseville, and Our Lady Queen of All Saints in Frasier will submit a plan to merge in 2014.* In addition, Sacred Heart will submit an acceptable debt repayment plan to be approved by the Archdiocese of Detroit by June 30, 2012. St. Isaac Jogues in St. Clair Shores and St. Angela in Roseville will submit a plan to cluster in 2014 and merge in 2015.* St. Lucy and St. Joan of Arc, both in St. Clair Shores, will submit a plan to merge by 2016.* The following parishes are planning accordingly as a result of Together in Faith, Phase Two: Holy Family in Inkster will cease functioning as a parish but will remain in use as a chapel under the jurisdiction of St. Mary in Wayne. No date is presently set for this transition. St. Edmund and St. Sylvester in Warren will cluster in 2012 and develop plans to eventually merge to one site. Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament, Church of the Madonna, St. Benedict, and St. Gregory in Detroit are to develop plans to eventually merge and retain a maximum of two worship sites, one of which must be the Cathedral.
