If We Must Die by: Claude McKay

If we must die, let it not be like hogs Hunted and penned in an inglorious spot, While round us bark the mad and hungry dogs, Making their mock at our accursèd lot. If we must die, O let us nobly die, So that our precious blood may not be shed In vain; then even the monsters we defy Shall be constrained to honor us though dead! O kinsmen! we must meet the common foe! Though far outnumbered let us show us brave, And for their thousand blows deal one death-blow! What though before us lies the open grave? Like men we'll face the murderous, cowardly pack, Pressed to the wall, dying, but fighting back!

Analysis
The theme of the poem was saying if their going to die, let them die proudly and honorably. They wouldn¶t want to die in vain. I think also what the poem was saying if they die, they don¶t want to die like animals, they want to die nobly and they want them to know that they were fighting back. Also that they weren¶t going to give up. The allusion in this poem was him talking about how African Americans were getting segregated and how the dogs were attacking them, how people got killed, how they got hosed, ect«. The tone in this poem was melancholy. Also another tone is indignant. This is because he seemed like he was sad and angry about what was going on to our people. There was a lot of imagery. I could see his entire poem in my head when I was reading it. It seem like did a good job with sight. I think the poem was saying the African Americans had to constantly fight for what was right and for what we wanted and sometimes they had to die but at least they had died in honor and them knowing they had got what they wanted.
