Tapas Soren a Santal Adivasi could not get the government sanctioned money to complete a well for his village as he refused to bribe the officials. After beating on every door in vain he went to the Chari market doused in kerosene oil and torched himself. He died of third degree burns on 8th July 08 but not before he made poignant statements on video as to how the struggle should continue.
This poem is being written as his burnt body lies in the hold of an aircraft 30,000 feet high. At Ranchi airport crowds are awaiting to take him on his last journey. Mouths tied with white bands hundreds of Jharkhandi activists in a defiant silence will take his body to the gates of the Governors residence. There
Tying of cloth is a tradition in many parts of India. For gratitude its done on temples or for the driving away of evil it is done in a place where evil dwells.the voice recording of his final interview with us will be played. The activist will then tie the white bands on the wrought gate of the Governor. His family will take over the body to be buried in his village in Hazaribagh. .
